Great sites on Salt Lake

There’s 2 or 3 loops in the state park, we got one of the walk up sites on a Friday night. $20 and includes entrance fee, you check in at the guard station at the entrance and they said park gates close at 10pm.

Had a great view and were able to walk to trail heads. Our section had vault toilets for each group of campsites, huge fire pits and two picnic tables at each site. Only con is that the brine flies were outrageous!! I know outside comes with bugs, but this was like a different level! They actually chilled out once the sun went down but during the day constantly landing all over us. So just be mentally prepared.

Windy buffaloooo!

Antelope island was the most beautiful surprise!! We drove from Central Oregon to saltlake in one go and when we got to saltlake we had no idea where we were going to go for the night.

Antelope island was maybe 30 minutes of a drive from Salt-lake and the island was BEAUTIFUL.

When youre on the long straight away to the island everything looks so ghostly, foggy, and unexplored. The sunset was one ive never seen before.

There was only a few other rvs there and everything was very spread out.

Within 10 minutes of finding a spot we saw multiple buffalo and a heard of antelope!

That night the wind coming down from the mountains was horrendous and the rain poored! But the next morning it was beautiful!

So.Many.Bugs

The island is absolutely beautiful, the bison amazing and we looked at two campgrounds that were both in great locations, with great spots.  Unfortunately all that beauty can't distract you from the thousands of bugs that are determined to eat you alive.  We had already set up camp, sprayed bug spray and brought out all our anti-bug measures, but none of it worked.  We had to break down camp and leave.  Driving off the island, it sounded like rain, but it was in fact bugs hitting the windshield and front of the car.  I would not come back to camp here, but it's worth a day trip.

Come for the AMAZING DARK SKIES, avoid Mayfly season

Antelope Island is NOT for the faint of heart.

To be clear there are 2 reservable campgrounds here. The first is Bridger Bay which is basically Utah's Mad Max campground. If you don't own an RV why would you even? The second is Lady Finger with 5 walk in sites. The walk is less than 2 minutes for all 5.

In early spring you have thousands of biting flies. Some are HUGE Midges and they will bite several times- wear very tight long sleeves. Others are teeny and crawl all over your scalp and only the finest mesh hats will keep most at bay- they are very creative in getting past protective clothing.

We camped in late July to see the Perseid Meteor Shower which I HIGHLY recommend. We stayed in site 5 which is off on it's own little trail but still close to the parking. Eeach site gets 1 reserved parking.. which may be occupied by sunset chasers so come early to stake your claim. Once inside Antelope Island Park you have until 10pm before the gates close- you can leave anytime but you can't get back inside after 10pm.

If you come late summer you WILL be accosted by thousands upon THOUSANDS of Orb Spiders. They can weave their webs overnight and they will be right across your path as you go to the bathroom- SURPRISE! They are there for the hideous flies so PLEASE leave them alone. They are not poisonous or aggressive but their webs will be all over the picnic table and on all the tall grass going to your campsite and to the bathroom. These spiders are only in LadyFinger- the RV campground is exposed to the elements and spider free. This is a dry camp but there are 2 rest stations which are cleaned out on Saturday so THANKFULLY smells are not a major issue.

I cannot recommend sky and bird watching here enough.  Skies here are open in all directions- it's amazing to see satellites pass and look west and see city lights as well. It's also nice and quiet. Campsite reservations have been easy anytime I go as it's not a very well known campsite- yet. PS- no fires allowed and if allergic you'll want to bring plenty of meds- this area has all the major allergens- mites, grass seed and Sagebrush.

Bison Everywhere

There were some very well maintained hiking trails on the island. The bathrooms were pit toilets but they were kept very clean. The campsites were huge! We had an amazing time.

Great Sunsets. Expect wind

Great last minute spot out on Antelope Island. Multiple sites in a number of locations across the island so plenty of places to choose from. Went in September at the tail end of summer camping season. Was attempting to outrun a storm and it caught up to me, woke up in the middle of the night with the side of my tent hitting me in the face from the wind. On the plus side bison have free reign of the entire island so you may wake up to one walking through your site.

Camping on Antelope Island

Antelope Island is a great place to visit if you have never been. The view is great, wildlife, bird watching and camping are also great experiences. The only negative impact from camping was the lack of trees where the campground is located and the horse flies that wake up early to sting you in the summer. Other than that we had a great time and would recommend it for anyone who has never camped out on an island before.
