BLM's Williams Bottom Campground sits along Highway 279 in the red rock canyon country outside Moab, where the Colorado River flows just across the road from 17 first-come, first-served sites. This primitive campground operates year-round under Bureau of Land Management oversight, with vault toilets and an iron ranger fee collection system but no water or hookups available.
The campground attracts climbers heading to the nearby Wall Street climbing area and off-road enthusiasts accessing the Poison Spider trail system. Alan B. notes it's the "perfect spot for accessing all of the Wall Street climbing area," with most routes reachable within half a mile. Sites feature metal fire rings with cooking grates and picnic tables, with some offering shade from cottonwoods and canyon walls during afternoon heat.
Road noise presents the main drawback here. Multiple campers mention traffic from off-road vehicles and climbers throughout the day and into evening hours, as Highway 279 serves as a primary access route for recreational activities. The sandy sites can harbor fire ants, and reviewers recommend checking shoes and gear left outside overnight. Petroglyphs appear on canyon walls nearby, accessible by short walks from the campground.
The location provides convenient access to Arches National Park, Canyonlands Island in the Sky district, and Dead Horse Point State Park, all within 30 minutes' drive. Amanda M. found it served as "the perfect base camp for visiting Arches and Canyonlands NPs." Weekend sites fill quickly, particularly during peak seasons, with Thursday arrivals offering better availability.
Campers seeking quieter alternatives might consider the more secluded campgrounds around Moab along the Colorado River corridor upstream from town.
