Hikers heading to The Wave or Buckskin Gulch will find Stateline Campground positioned about a mile past the Wire Pass trailhead, accessible via 9.5 miles of gravel road off Highway 89. This Bureau of Land Management site offers eight first-come, first-serve spots, each equipped with picnic tables, shade structures, fire rings, and grills. The campground sits on the Utah-Arizona border within camping near BLM Land — Kanab Field Office, providing free overnight stays for RVs up to 21 feet.
The dirt access road requires attention, particularly after weather events. Michelle S. notes the "dirt road is very manageable in any vehicle in dry conditions, however if wet/muddy it could be rough going without 4x4." Most reviewers describe the route as bumpy but doable for high-clearance vehicles, though one mentions encountering a concrete barrier that blocked Utah-side access during their visit.
Campers consistently praise the facility's upkeep for a free site. "Toilets are the cleanest we have experienced," reports JH A.. Two pit toilets serve the campground, and dumpsters handle waste disposal. The remote location means no water source or cell service, so visitors must pack adequate supplies. Fire restrictions may apply seasonally.
The campground serves as a staging area for permit-required hikes to The Wave and slot canyon adventures through Wire Pass. Buckskin Gulch Dispersed sits 5.5 miles northeast for those seeking additional camping options. Night skies offer clear viewing away from light pollution, while nearby White Pocket Camping Area provides an Arizona alternative 8.3 miles east.
This campground works best for self-sufficient campers with reliable vehicles who plan to explore the area's renowned hiking destinations and don't mind the bumpy access road.
