    Brazos Bend State Park Campground

Ranger Review: Kameng Boots by Mishmi Takin at Brazos Bend State Park

    Campground Review

It's incredible that I was born and raised in Houston and have lived here the past four years but haven't made it out to Brazos Bend State Park until now! A quick, 45 minute drive southwest will get you out of the concrete jungle that is the sprawling Space City metropolis and into one of the lushest, greenest parts of Texas. Brazos Bend is a "Nature Lover's Paradise" - there is abundant wildlife. There is great fishing, ample bird watching, and lots and lots of alligators (!). Lots of trails for walking, running, biking, and horseback riding. The George Observatory is a pretty amazing feature of this park (but only open Saturdays).

We arrived at Brazos Bend on a Friday afternoon and were able to walk-in no problem. Walk-in rate is $12/day + the daily park entrance fee ($5 for adults, free for kids). I have a Texas State Parks Pass so we didn't have to pay the entrance fees (saved us $40 for two nights of camping!). Additionally there were several other great options including: Full-Site RV hook-up ($25/night), Standard Camping ($20/night, incl. water & electricity), and 14 Cabins ($80-200/night but have everything you could ever need or want).

We did a lot of nature walks, game playing, and swimming during our two days at Brazos Bend State Park. Summer is probably not the best time to visit any park in Texas - its hot and muggy and the mosquitos are out in full force. Bring your DEET. Seriously. Despite that though, we were very pleasantly surprised by the amenities (swimming pool, screened in picnic tables, fire pits, and tent pads!)

    Product Review

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get products to test from time to time - this past weekend at Brazos Bend I tested out the Kameng Mid eVent Waterproof Hiking Boot by Mishmi Takin.

These boots have got it all.

First, these boots are hella comfortable! I was blown away how comfortable they were right out of the box. Over the years, I've owned many pairs of hiking boots and they all required a significant break-in period. Not these!

Second, they're waterproof AND breathable. Not water resistant, like actually water proof.

Third, the look great. All 3 color schemes are fantastic I had a tough time choosing between green, grey and orange.

Fourth, so lightweight. These only weigh 1.5lbs so even though they are boots, they won't weigh you down.

    5/5 Would Recommend.

Matagorda Bay Nature and RV Park

    Colorado River Waterfront Camping

    Pros:

    • Quick and friendly check-in

.• Large parking area that is rig-friendly for check-in.

    • Knowledgeable park personnel

    • Nature center with interactive exhibits and gift shop

    • Well maintained. Daily we saw the camp hosts working diligently, even hosing down and scrubbing bird poop from campsites.

    • Saturday morning 1.5 hour guided Gulf beach walk($5/pp) by Paige and Whitley. Paige knew her“stuff” as she was pelted continuously with questions and she never missed a beat!

    • Complimentary early Saturday morning coffee and pastries.

    • Along the Colorado River but you can hear ocean roar where the river meets the Gulf of Mexico.

    • Level concrete parking pad surrounded by grass. Back-ins and drive-thrus.

    • Two sewer hook-up outlets.

    • Large concrete picnic table.

    • Very nice and clean toilets/shower building in an elevated building accessible by a ramp. Must have code to enter.

    • Laundry facility in toilet/shower building with code entry.

    • Nice Colorado River fishing piers with fish cleaning tables with freshwater spigot and a super pier over the beach/ocean.

    • Primo sunsets

    • Bay City, 20-minute drive, for the closest Walmart, HEB and other retailers and restaurants.

    Cons:

    • LCRA $6 on-line reservation fee.

    • Absolutely no trees or vegetation between sites which equals NO SHADE and NO PRIVACY.

    • Ocean“breeze” made it impossible to deploy trailer awning.

    • No fire pits, but if you bring your own with a screen cover, you may have a fire, if you bring wood as no wood is sold at this park.

    • NOT A DARK SKY FRIENDLY CAMPGROUND due to way too many street lights throughout the campground, along the river bank and on the fishing piers.  This would be a 5 star campground if there was more darkness!

    • Complimentary LCRA WIFI was weak and unreliable.

    • When the ocean"breeze" died down and the humidity was up, we were attacked by swarms of mosquitos which required us to heavily apply repellent in mid-February

    • Not much in the town of Matagorda, basically a fishing village, and of those businesses, not many operating in mid-February.

    Lakeview RV Resort

    Rude Staff

I stayed here for 3 months and the manager Robert was very biased and unhospitable towards me the entire time. So I complained to the district manager Marty and told him I would not be extending my stay and would leave at end of month. He agreed and said I would get back my $50 deposit which is required for 5 days notice to move out (I was giving 2 weeks notice which is much more than the required 5 days). Upon checking out at the end of my stay Robert of course did not refund my $50 forcing me to call Marty again (Will update if I ever get my $50 back). On the final email they sent me with my electricity usage I noticed they changed my name to BLACKLIST and when I asked Marty he said 'correct you will never stay at one of our resorts again since you seemed unhappy' so to sum it up if you complain aboout how they treat you; you will be Blacklisted and have to fight for your deposit back.

*not kid friendly *not pet friendly *not people friendly *very very noisy *pool failed inspection and water seems to be chemically inbalanced even after reopening (water smells rotten) *hot tub jets do not work *dog yard is not cleaned

    Galveston Island State Park Campground

    Great Spot!

The beachside campsites offer electric hookups and shaded picnic tables that are great for tent and RV camping! Keep in mind, the beach is not visible from any electric campsite- but it is a close walk to the beach and conveniently located next to a comfortable restroom with accessible private showers. The beach itself is clean/not littered and is perfect for skim boarding!

Guide to Richwood

Cabin accommodations near Richwood, Texas provide a convenient base for exploring the Gulf Coast. The region averages 204 sunny days per year with summer temperatures typically reaching 90°F and winter lows around 45°F. Most camping cabins near Richwood are positioned within 30-45 minutes of the coastline, offering access to both beach activities and inland nature experiences.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At San Luis Pass County Park, fishing is the main attraction with multiple access points. "This is a nice place if you want to fish. No boat needed. They have a lighted fishing path, boat docks and launches," notes Jeannette V. The park sits right on a channel with "excellent fishing & crabbing" according to Susana H.

Wildlife viewing: Brazos Bend State Park Campground offers trails for spotting local wildlife, particularly alligators. "If you go on a moderate temperature day (this is the key. If it is too hot or cold you won't see Gators) you can see literally dozens of massive alligators. We are talking 6 feet long and right on the pathway," explains Ashley C. The park also features a "small nature centre where you can pet baby Gators and learn about them."

Astronomical observation: The observatory at Brazos Bend State Park Campground hosts regular weekend programs throughout the year. "The best part of this park is the observatory, which has special events and regular weekend hours pretty much all year. It's absolutely worth staying up late for this!" shares Kim B. For optimal viewing, campers should "help keep light pollution down in that area so everyone can enjoy the stars (no flashlights or phones out)," advises Candy P.

What campers like

Beach proximity: Quintana Beach County Park features direct beach access via a boardwalk. "Nice campground that has cabins and day use pavilions. There is pedestrian beach access and you can fish off the channel wall," reports Jeannette V. Another visitor notes they have "a nice boardwalk leading down to the water and they also have little shaded tables you can sit at and a decent jungle gym for the kids."

Water recreation amenities: Blue Water RV Resort offers both bay access and proximity to the ocean. "It is on the Bay, but since it is a narrow part of the Island you are right across the street from the beach. It is only a 2 lane road and you are far enough away from town it's not super crowded at the beach," explains Sheila C. The resort also features "a nice swimming pool and food trucks on the weekends."

Site amenities: Most cabin sites include concrete pads with covered areas. At Galveston Island State Park, "campsites are concrete, level, with a very nice shelter. We stayed on the beach side and easy access to the beach from pretty much any site," notes Jim P. Many cabin sites throughout the region include fire rings, picnic tables, and utility hookups for extended stays.

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Summer heat and insects can affect comfort levels. "If you go in the summer you need to watch out for mosquitoes," warns Joseph P. about Brazos Bend. At Quintana Beach County Park, "a nice steady breeze kept the mosquitoes away, which we heard can be pretty bad," reports Debbie J., who visited in April.

Reservation timing: Cabins at popular locations book quickly during peak seasons. Galveston Island State Park Campground sites are particularly sought after. "Beach side is very nice since being remodeled. Great back in sites. Nice electrical and water service towers at sites," explains James P. Weekends often fill months in advance.

Site variation: Cabin quality and amenities vary significantly between parks. Many require bringing your own bedding, cooking equipment, and supplies. Some parks offer rustic cabins with minimal furnishings while others provide more elaborate accommodations with kitchenettes.

Tips for camping with families

Splash features: Jamaica Beach RV Resort offers multiple water features for children. "The park has two pools an extra large hot tub, lazy river and a kiddo section access to beach is a block Down," explains Ricky B. Another visitor adds, "2 hot tubs, 1 indoor and 1 outdoor, 2 pools, 1 lazy river (so relaxing), 1 miniature golf course... and an awesome splash pad for the kids."

Recreation facilities: Camp Mohawk County Park provides diverse activities for children. "They have cabins, dorms, tent camping, hiking trails, stocked ponds for fishing, playgrounds, volleyball, basketball courts, pavilions for rent with bar b q grills," notes Mary. The park is "pet friendly with waste stations around for disposal of their waste."

Beach amenities: Several coastal parks offer beach rinse stations and comfort facilities. Samantha D. notes that at Quintana Beach County Park "bathrooms are nice and have outdoor showers so you can rinse off the sand and salt." Sabrina H. adds that the park has a "beach access with rinsing station" which helps manage sand when returning to cabins.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Corner locations often provide more space and privacy. At Galveston Island KOA Holiday, John E. notes, "The RV sites were well-maintained and spacious, with clean concrete pads that provided easy access for our motorhome. We were pleasantly surprised by the level of privacy between sites and the beautiful greenery surrounding the campground, as we had a corner site with dog pen."

Leveling needs: Most cabin sites are built on level concrete pads. Debbie J. mentions at Quintana Beach County Park the "sites are spacious and patio is surrounded with well mowed grass. Level, concrete pads. We required no leveling."

Connectivity considerations: WiFi quality varies between parks. At Quintana Beach County Park, "Free wifi, but the connection kept dropping. Great 5G connection with Verizon," reports Debbie J. Several parks offer limited streaming capabilities, so plan accordingly for entertainment needs when staying in cabin accommodations.
