Stephen F. Austin State Park Campground

    Pleasant Texas State Park

We had a really nice relaxing stay at Stephen F Austin State Park near San Filepe, Texas. Great little state park easily accessed from I-10. The 38 RV sites are all asphalt pad pull throughs with 30/15 amp electric, water and sewer complete with concrete pad for table, fire pit, lantern and all well spaced for plenty of privacy...big rig friendly. They have an additional 39 tent only sites with water and 25 primitive. Screened shelters are reservable for tent camping with 20 amp electric and water plus one rustic cabin with amenities. There is a$5 daily entrance fee in addition to camping fees. The bathhouse facilities are brand new. It's a small park but they do have five miles of trails for hiking/biking with views of the Brazos River. We enjoyed the wildlife; deer strolling in the campground every morning and evening, birds, rabbits, frogs, turtles, a bobcat and numerous owls. They have a Nature Center; however it was not open during our visit. The park office has a small store with sundries and park souvenirs. The nearby San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site tells the story of early settlers to Texas and is worth a visit. We made a run to the nearby town of Sealy to do a much needed laundry stop...small community with grocery, dining and fuel to meet most needs. Lake Houston Wilderness Park

    Really Nice Cabins

I have stayed in the cabins here four or five times. The first two years we had smaller groups so we stayed in the A Frame cabins. The last three years we've had their biggest one. There is a creek that runs through it and it is never over populated while I've been here. The cabin we've used was flooded and has not been rebuilt so we are looking for other places to hold our Spring Camp out. I hope they rebuild.

    Brazos Bend State Park Campground

Ranger Review: Kameng Boots by Mishmi Takin at Brazos Bend State Park

    Campground Review

It's incredible that I was born and raised in Houston and have lived here the past four years but haven't made it out to Brazos Bend State Park until now! A quick, 45 minute drive southwest will get you out of the concrete jungle that is the sprawling Space City metropolis and into one of the lushest, greenest parts of Texas. Brazos Bend is a "Nature Lover's Paradise" - there is abundant wildlife. There is great fishing, ample bird watching, and lots and lots of alligators (!). Lots of trails for walking, running, biking, and horseback riding. The George Observatory is a pretty amazing feature of this park (but only open Saturdays).

We arrived at Brazos Bend on a Friday afternoon and were able to walk-in no problem. Walk-in rate is $12/day + the daily park entrance fee ($5 for adults, free for kids). I have a Texas State Parks Pass so we didn't have to pay the entrance fees (saved us $40 for two nights of camping!). Additionally there were several other great options including: Full-Site RV hook-up ($25/night), Standard Camping ($20/night, incl. water & electricity), and 14 Cabins ($80-200/night but have everything you could ever need or want).

We did a lot of nature walks, game playing, and swimming during our two days at Brazos Bend State Park. Summer is probably not the best time to visit any park in Texas - its hot and muggy and the mosquitos are out in full force. Bring your DEET. Seriously. Despite that though, we were very pleasantly surprised by the amenities (swimming pool, screened in picnic tables, fire pits, and tent pads!)

    Product Review

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get products to test from time to time - this past weekend at Brazos Bend I tested out the Kameng Mid eVent Waterproof Hiking Boot by Mishmi Takin.

These boots have got it all.

First, these boots are hella comfortable! I was blown away how comfortable they were right out of the box. Over the years, I've owned many pairs of hiking boots and they all required a significant break-in period. Not these!

Second, they're waterproof AND breathable. Not water resistant, like actually water proof.

Third, the look great. All 3 color schemes are fantastic I had a tough time choosing between green, grey and orange.

Fourth, so lightweight. These only weigh 1.5lbs so even though they are boots, they won't weigh you down.

    5/5 Would Recommend.

Stephen F. Austin State Park Campground

    Nice, Kind of Pricy

We got a spot here for one night with no reservations on a Thursday in late March, but all the spots were booked for the weekend. With taxes and fees the price came to $38 for a night at a FHU site.

All sites are pull through / bump out style. Our spot (#39) wasn't level. Spots come with a picnic table and fire pit.

Firewood and ice for sale here at campground.

Free showers are really nice and clean, look pretty new. Water never got hot for me though.

Friendly rangers at the office when we checked in, and they had lots of cute things to buy at the gift shop.

    Dumpsters and aluminum can recycling.

Ok cell reception, not many bars but both the att and Verizon phone worked fine. We heard the rangers tell other campers that there is free wifi at the campground but we didn't see it pop up when we looked for it.

Lots of nice short hiking trails here throughout the park.

Stephen F. Austin State Park Campground

    Well Equipped Campsites

We made a reservation for a tent site and found the rate very reasonable. Sites are well equipped with water, a fire pit with grill grate, picnic table, and pole to hang food if necessary. Bathrooms and dumpster area are clean and well lit. The park hosts were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the short trails that were accessible from the campsite. Saw deer in the camp area and enjoyed (mostly) watching the big yellow garden spiders building their webs next to the trail in the morning.

    Lakeview RV Resort

    Rude Staff

I stayed here for 3 months and the manager Robert was very biased and unhospitable towards me the entire time. So I complained to the district manager Marty and told him I would not be extending my stay and would leave at end of month. He agreed and said I would get back my $50 deposit which is required for 5 days notice to move out (I was giving 2 weeks notice which is much more than the required 5 days). Upon checking out at the end of my stay Robert of course did not refund my $50 forcing me to call Marty again (Will update if I ever get my $50 back). On the final email they sent me with my electricity usage I noticed they changed my name to BLACKLIST and when I asked Marty he said 'correct you will never stay at one of our resorts again since you seemed unhappy' so to sum it up if you complain aboout how they treat you; you will be Blacklisted and have to fight for your deposit back.

*not kid friendly *not pet friendly *not people friendly *very very noisy *pool failed inspection and water seems to be chemically inbalanced even after reopening (water smells rotten) *hot tub jets do not work *dog yard is not cleaned

Guide to Katy

Cabin rentals near Katy, Texas offer visitors a chance to explore Houston-area natural spaces without venturing far from urban conveniences. Located in the coastal plains of southeast Texas, the region has an average elevation of 150 feet and experiences a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot summers. Most Katy-area cabin accommodations remain open year-round, though seasonal conditions affect availability.

What to do

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Stephen F. Austin State Park features multiple wildlife observation points along its trails. "The trails were beautiful and easy to get through (marked well) with all of us and the staff was helpful and kind enough to let us know which ones were closed," notes one visitor who brought their extended family.

Fishing access: Several cabin locations provide direct access to stocked fishing areas. At Brazos Bend State Park Campground, visitors can fish in multiple ponds and lakes within walking distance of cabin accommodations. "There's a small nature centre where you can pet baby Gators and learn about them. Lots of pretty trails and look outs," according to one camper's experience.

Observatory stargazing: Brazos Bend State Park Campground offers a unique astronomical experience from its on-site observatory. "The best part though is the observatory. There's always plenty of stargazers up there that love to share their equipment, you can also pay for the big telescopes," reports one reviewer who visited the park.

What campers like

Year-round water recreation: Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort Waller provides extensive water facilities regardless of season. "The kids absolutely loved the water zone and lazy river—we literally couldn't get them to leave. The staff was super friendly, and everything felt clean and well-maintained," mentioned a visitor who stayed in one of their cabin accommodations.

Dog-friendly facilities: Highway 6 RV Resort ranks highly with pet owners for its dedicated pet amenities. "They have 2 dog runs, one of them being the largest dog run weve seen at a campground so our mali really got to sprint it out. They also had a free dog wash! both out doggos got washed and it was easy to use with hot and cold water and a larger blow dryer!" shared one enthusiastic reviewer.

Spacious, level sites: Stephen F. Austin State Park Campground provides well-maintained cabin and camping spaces. "VERY quiet, completely dead-flat level site, with electric (30 amp). Beware of fire ants. Woke up to a beautiful fog in morning," reports a visitor who appreciated the overnight accommodations.

What you should know

Cabin availability varies seasonally: Many parks limit cabin reservations during peak periods. Houston West RV Park and AllStar RV Resort both require advance bookings for their cabin options, particularly during spring and summer months.

Price range considerations: Cabins near Katy range from basic to full-service accommodations with corresponding price differences. At Highway 6 RV Resort, standard cabins include basic amenities while upgraded units feature additional conveniences. "A bit on the pricier side, but it is very well managed and well kept. Pool is clean, bathrooms are clean, laundry room clean and looked like all the machines worked," noted one guest about the overall facility quality.

Internet connectivity varies: For remote workers staying in cabins, connection quality differs significantly between properties. Some parks offer dedicated computer rooms with equipment. "They have a computer room, exercise equipment, showers, laundry. The grounds are well kept," mentioned a visitor to Lakeview RV Resort.

Tips for camping with families

Theme-based activities: Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort Waller specializes in family-oriented programming. "We camped during the week and it wasn't very crowded. Plenty to do for our little ones. Huge play ground closed for COVID but other things open we're splash pad, water slides, pool, lazy river, fishing, golf cart rental and more," shared a visitor about the range of family activities.

Short trail options: Stephen F. Austin State Park features trails suitable for younger hikers. "Most of the trails were short (less than a mile), so if you are looking for a place for moderate or extreme hiking, it is not here, but for the kids, these were perfect!" explained a camper who visited with small children.

Bathroom proximity planning: When booking cabins or campsites with children, consider location relative to facilities. "We wanted a site fairly close to the bathrooms because of the kiddos, one big enough to fit us all, and also one with a lot of shade because it was hella hot!" advised a parent who camped at Stephen F. Austin State Park.

Tips from RVers

Gate access protocols: Several cabin and RV properties near Katy use security gates with specific entry requirements. "The entire park is fenced. There is a locked gate at the entrance. Residents have a code to open the gate or a remote gate opener can be used if a deposit is paid for the device," explains a long-term resident of Highway 6 RV Resort.

Alligator awareness: When booking cabin accommodations in parks like Brazos Bend, understand wildlife safety protocols. "If you want to see alligators in their natural habitat this is the park for you. There wer so many. We even came across one on the trail eating a snake," reported one visitor who observed the park's famous reptile residents.

Full hookup availability: For those bringing RVs alongside cabin stays, Lakeview RV Resort offers comprehensive services in Houston. "We stayed in a site that overlooked the lake on the property. It was very nice," noted a visitor who appreciated the waterfront location.
