    Fort Parker State Park Campground

    Peaceful place

We tent camped in a primitive spot #47. Overall the spot was nice but not very level making the best placement of our large tent a bit of a challenge. Vault toilets were clean and had hand sanitizer. The nature and hiking in this park was our favorite part. Even rented a canoe and paddled across the lake to the river. Park staff were friendly and helpful. Some primitive tent sites are right on the edge of the lake and after a big rain were very swampy. I believe all sites had partial shade and some have more privacy than others. We did spot some full hook up sites in the RV section that have good space for a tent set up and we may try that next time cause we definitely will be back.

    Cons

So day #2 without any TP in men’s restroom.  Went to front gate to report it and was told they would call it into the Army Corps of Engineers as gate volunteers have no stock of TP on hand.  Never saw any TP before leaving on third day

Toilet facility #1 women’s had raw sewage throughout deep enough to cover your foot. Site 11 has electrical hook up at rear on the door side of the camper

Site 11 water connection is centered at the rear of the parking pad.

    Site 11 unlevel.

Numerous piles of charcoal ash throughout site 11 campsite not in the fire pit.

Concrete picnic table needs degreased as surface has lots of large greasy stain

Site numbers are painted on the concrete picnic table so extremely difficult to see in the dark.

    Airport Park - Waco Lake

    Filthy women’s restroom

This park is a short drive to all of Waco attractions including the famous Silos. We stayed Friday and Saturday nights.

    Pros:

    • Very friendly gate attendant

    • Extremely quiet park except for arriving/departing aircraft at Waco Regional Airport

    • Great view of the lake as trees/shrubs are minimal

    • Clean campsite

    • Very clean campfire pit

    • Most sites had a nice distance from neighbor sites

    • Crushed granite surrounds the site’s asphalt parking pad so no muddy mess after rain

    • Pedestal BBQ grill, fire pit with grilling grate and aluminum picnic table at each site

    • Some sites had aluminum roof pavilion over picnic table

    • Some sites had lantern pole

    • Park roadways in good condition

    • Entrance gate locked at 10pm

    • Plenty of TP in women’s restroom

    • 4 bar signal AT&T

    Cons:

    • Filthy women’s restroom. Human feces on floor. Two of the three stalls locked for days. One remaining stall the door would not close and latch. Sign posted on door that restrooms were cleaned Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, but the human feces were on the floor Friday night, Saturday all day and Sunday morning. Exterior door would not close completely.

    • No water to sinks in women’s restroom

    • No soap dispenser and no hand dryer in women’s restroom

    • Men’s restroom door locked Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning

    • Exterior door to one shower room was unable to be closed

    • Extremely low water pressure to campsite

    • No site privacy due to minimal trees/brush throughout the park

    • Low hanging tree branches over roadway and campsite pad

    • Our campsite pedestal BBQ grill was extremely corroded

    Fishermans Point Marina and Resort

    Limited tent sites

We went to check this place out to reserve for a family camp trip. The grounds are clean and spacious. They have wonderful cabins and RV sites. The only have 5 tent sites. There are no tent pads and the sites are on a small hill. The picnic tables are limited and not every tent site has one. There are no fire rings so it’s a little unnerving building a fire on the grass. The lake and marina is wonderful and clean. They have all sorts of thing to do there. Kayak rentals, fishing charters, a cute little cafe. This is a place I would come to rent a cabin but not to tent camp!

    COE Bardwell Lake Mott Park

    I appreciate this location.

Made my reservation on line just a few spots were available. Spot 04 with a water view space is slanted. They had the parking pass ready to pick up so it was not necessary to speak with anyone. The view, electricity, water, and showers was very nice at such an affordable price. Take your cleaning supplies into the bathroom as a precaution, I did not see trash can in the bathrooms. Leave No Trace is not really practiced by other campers so feel free to pick up after someone else this space is beautiful and deserves respect. I enjoyed the rain and the view it was very relaxing and I appreciated a shower as well as powering all my extras before heading on the road to Minnesota. $14 for the space very appreciate.

    Airport Park - Waco Lake

    Airport Park COE, Lake Waco

Airport Park on Lake Waco, in Waco, TX. We really like this park. We were in site 27, which our camp side is shady during the afternoon and evening. Each site has a fire ring, bbq grill, & lantern post. The RV parking pad is asphalt and long. Big Rigs would have no problems here. When we arrived the gravel pad was raked all nice and neat. 50 amp sites are $26 a night. The loop we are in doesn't have the nice restrooms. We are in the loop that has sites 16 - 36. To me, these are the nicer RV sites, if only the restrooms were better. The other 2 loops have really nice restrooms, with private shower rooms. Site 24 looks to be the pick, as it has shade pretty much all day. We will definitely come back to this camp ground.

    Liberty Hill Park Campground

    Great, family friendly park

Was pleasantly surprised at this Corp of Engineers park. Extremely clean grounds and super friendly staff. Allows pets ( on leash of course). Our site had power and electric only, but I believe some sites also have sewer. We had a great view over the lake, although no water access.

Guide to Mexia

Tent camping near Mexia, Texas offers varied experiences across different terrains and ecosystems. The region sits at approximately 500 feet elevation with clay soil conditions that can affect ground stakes during rain. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F from June through September, while winter nights often drop below freezing, requiring campers to pack accordingly for seasonal conditions.

What to do

**Firearm activities: Lawley Land permits target shooting on designated areas of the property. A camper reports, "You can pop off fire work here or shoot off guns. My kids had a great time."

Fishing access: Lake Limestone Public Use Area #3 provides direct waterfront access for bank fishing. The area includes several picnic tables near the water and allows tent setup within 50 feet of parking areas. Pack insect repellent as mosquitoes can be prevalent near the water.

Hiking trails: Fort Boggy State Park maintains several well-marked trails accessible directly from camping areas. A visitor noted, "We hiked the trails and went and checked out the little lake." Trails range from 0.5 to 2.5 miles in length, with moderate elevation changes suitable for most ability levels.

What campers like

Stargazing opportunities: Paradise Acres offers minimal light pollution for astronomy enthusiasts. A camper mentioned, "Very quite and loved looking up at the stars!" The site sits on a ridge that provides unobstructed sky views in nearly all directions.

Modern cabin facilities: Fort Boggy State Park provides cabin options for those seeking more comfort than tent camping. One visitor shared, "Beautiful small state park. We usually tent camp but this time we decided staying at a cabin. Nice, beautiful and modern cabins. Love the enclosed porch and open porch as well."

Swimming opportunities: Tent campsites at several locations feature lake access for swimming during warm months. The water temperature typically remains comfortable from May through September, with many campsites within 200 feet of swimming access points.

What you should know

Bathroom availability varies significantly: Many tent camping locations near Mexia lack permanent bathroom facilities. Fort Boggy State Park provides modern facilities near cabins, with one visitor noting, "Wonderful bathrooms nearby." However, most primitive tent sites require campers to bring portable toilets or use backcountry techniques.

Seasonal considerations: Summer tent camping requires heat preparation with temperatures regularly exceeding 100°F in July and August. Winter camping requires cold-weather gear as temperatures can drop below 30°F from December through February. Spring offers the most moderate conditions but highest rainfall probability.

Reservation requirements: Hackberry Hills requires advance bookings for all campsites, with no walk-up availability during peak seasons. The reservation window opens 30 days prior to arrival dates, and sites typically fill on weekends from March through October.

Tips for camping with families

Space considerations: Paradise Acres offers four designated tent sites that accommodate families with children. The sites provide approximately 400 square feet of flat terrain suitable for larger family tents, with buffer areas between neighboring campers.

Educational opportunities: Camp Meisenbach provides designated areas for group activities and nature study. The camp perimeter trail takes approximately 45 minutes to complete and features informational signs about local plants and wildlife suitable for school-age children.

Safety precautions: During summer months, check tent sites thoroughly for fire ant mounds, particularly after rain. Sites near water require extra supervision for children, as shorelines can be steep and sudden in certain areas. Cell service remains limited at most tent camping locations, with emergency services averaging 20-30 minute response times.

Tips from RVers

Access limitations: Sand Creek Campground accommodates smaller RVs but has clearance restrictions. Vehicle length should not exceed 25 feet due to narrow access roads with tight turns. Ground conditions deteriorate quickly after rainfall, potentially trapping larger vehicles.

Campsite preparation: When tent camping near RV areas, select sites at least 100 feet from generator-using RVs when possible. Many designated tent areas feature natural screening such as trees or elevation changes to reduce noise impact from neighboring sites.

Combined camping options: Several locations permit both tent and small RV camping on the same site. This allows family groups to use multiple shelter types while sharing a common gathering area. Reservations for these dual-use sites typically require specification of both shelter types at booking.
