Badlands National Park's only developed campground sits within the eroded butte country of Interior, South Dakota, managed by the National Park Service and open to tents, vans, and RVs up to 65 feet. Cedar Pass has a layout that catches first-time visitors off guard: most sites are essentially parallel parking spots along one-way camp roads, with slides and awnings often extending toward the pavement. Reviewers with large rigs frequently note the awkwardness, though some have worked around it by pulling in backwards after checking with the entrance gate. Sites on the outer loops tend to provide more breathing room and open sightlines toward the surrounding butte formations.
The campground is fully exposed. No trees, no windbreaks beyond the covered picnic shelter at each site. Wind is a recurring theme across dozens of reviews, with gusts regularly reaching 50 to 60 mph overnight. Tent campers should use extra stakes and pay close attention to incoming weather. The tradeoff for that exposure is a 360-degree view of the Badlands formations and, after dark, one of the more unobstructed night skies in the region. "Any negative disappears when you see the view," notes Shana D.
Amenities include flush toilets, coin-operated showers in a separate building, drinking water, a dump station, and electric and water hookups on select sites. The showers have drawn mixed feedback: water pressure and temperature vary, quarters can jam, and lighting in the shower house has been reported as unreliable. The bathrooms are described as functional and reasonably clean, though not recently renovated. A short walk reaches the Ben Reifel Visitor Center, a cafe, a small store, and an amphitheater with ranger programs. No fires are permitted anywhere in the park. Campers with dogs will find pet-friendly sites near Badlands National Park are available here.
Reservations open in March for the summer season, and the campground fills on weekday nights in July. Three sites near a flood-prone area are sometimes held back until the day before, which gives last-minute campers an occasional opening. Off-season visits in March can mean a much quieter stay, though most loops close and only pit toilets are available. The small town of Interior sits about two miles southwest for gas and basic supplies. Campers wanting a more rustic and free alternative within the park can head west to Sage Creek Campground, or those preferring lodging-style amenities nearby can look at Badlands Hotel & Campground.

An evening program led by park rangers is held nightly at the Cedar Pass Amphitheater. This event runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day, beginning each evening with a half-hour educational talk about the Badlands, covering a wide array of topics that change every evening. Once the educational part of the presentation finishes, the rangers begin a guided night sky viewing program. Interesting facts and features of our night sky will be explored and pointed out for you via laser, and telescopes are often provided to view star clusters, planets, and the Milky Way.The Amphitheater parking lot is conveniently located at the entrance to Cedar Pass Campground, in easy walking distance for most campers! For evening program start times, please see the Ben Reifel Visitor Center, Cedar Pass Lodge, or the host kiosk at the campground entrance.
Natural Features
Cedar Pass Campground is surrounded by prairie grasslands and Badlands buttes, or geologic formations. These formations contain sandstone, siltstone, mudstone, claystone, limestone, volcanic ash, and shale. The natural beauty of this landscape makes for stunning sunrises and sunsets, while low population density and minimal light pollution creates a beautiful night sky most evenings.
