    Twin Lakes Campground

Quiet and calm but for the flies

A great well maintained spot in the middle SD farmland near a peaceful lake.

The long dirt/gravel road surrounding was fun to navigate after a thunderstorm, but not too bad at 35mph.

It took a minute to find as the gps coordinates took me to a private property. Twin Lakes, Lakeside Use Area might work better.

Just turn right off of County Road 7, if you’re heading east, once you get pretty close, and after you’ve made your “deal with the devil” at the 4-way stop, and it’s only 100 yds or so.

There were a ton of obnoxious flies, as mentioned in another review, but only in the daytime. But they were not the biting kind. At nighttime, the insects were fine after applying a little repellent.

If you’re just looking for a free, quiet place to crash for the night, this site is definitely worth the drive off the freeway.

No water or electric, or picnic tables, but each site does have a fire ring. The park also has 2 vault toilets.

    Lake Thompson Recreation Area

    Lovely lake site

Beautiful location on the north shore of Lake Thompson. Some sites face the lake, others have shade with enough open sky for your StarLink dish. Beach access at the campground. Great fishing spots with cleaning stations available. For history buffs, campground is less than 10 miles from the Laura Ingalls Wilder homestead and De Smet. There are 4 dump stations near the campground entrance with multiple fresh water hookups around the campground. Staying here mid-week and there are few campers here.

    Hills RV Park

    Quiet & Clean

Can't give them anything more than 3 stars unfortunately. We arrived late afternoon for a simple overnight stay. They're literally on Main St. In the smallest downtown I've ever had the pleasure of spending a night. They have a in ground swimming pool. That's been closed and drained in the not so distant past. You'll have a rare opportunity to wash your clothes at their laundromat. The machines are dated yet clean in good working order, a definite plus for many. Even though they're located in a downtown area. It's still dark enough to get a view of the night sky. Campsites are close together. With a tree shading your camper helpful for keeping cool. A small "yard/patch" of grass at each campsite. Our rigs length truck and camper connected is 47'. We were able to pull thru the campsite and park. Without having to unhook. For a simple overnighter that was just another plus in their favor for us. Other campers were just as friendly as the people who owned and ran the campground. Don't expect to do any shopping. There's a Dollar General directly next door. For any basic needs if your so inclined. For us in a nutshell. The price to hookup to electric and water for a overnight stop. Made it a good spot to stop. They do also have sites with sewer hookups available for a higher fee.

    Famil-E-Fun Campground & RV Park

    Quiet and peaceful

We stayed one night on our way to Custer. We have a roof top tent so we stayed in a tent camping spot, there was plenty of room and a beautiful view of the sunset!

    Mitchell KOA

KOA Voyager in MITCHELL S D

Lovely, shady campground, office staff very helpful and polite excellent laundry facilities, clean bathrooms, and showers. They work hard at keeping the place immaculate. One downside no pool. They advertise the pool some places, but they can’t remove it because it’s on Google. They say a year or so ago, they had to take the pool out due to major damage and the expensive cost of replacing it. Now they have a lovely barbecue patio with tables with umbrellas to sit out and enjoy the day free barbecue grill for customers use.

    Lake Mitchell Campground

    Simple and sweet

I was only going to stay one night, ended up staying a second. Very easy to get a sight, close to food and general shopping. Right on the edge of town bit so there's a little traffic noise, but still feels woodsy. The grounds hosts are awesome and really good out of their way to make sure you have a wonderful stay. Overall I really loved my stay.
