Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Geddes, SD

Pease Creek Recreation Area welcomes dogs throughout its wooded campground along the Missouri River. Pets must remain on a ten-foot leash at all times in the recreation area and camping sites. The campground features 23 standard sites with electric hookups, clean restrooms, hot showers, and fire rings where campers can enjoy evenings with their pets. North Point Recreation Area provides similar pet-friendly accommodations with larger, well-spaced campsites suitable for tents, RVs, and even pet-friendly camping cabins. Both recreation areas offer shoreline access where dogs can cool off, though swimming with pets should be supervised due to river currents. Bald eagles frequent the river areas during winter months, creating potential wildlife viewing opportunities for campers and their pets.

Hiking trails near both campgrounds accommodate leashed dogs, with North Shore Path offering a 1.2-mile loop suitable for all skill levels. Many campsites back directly to the Missouri River, allowing campers and their pets easy water access for fishing or paddling. During summer months, early morning or evening walks are recommended to protect pets' paws from hot surfaces. South Shore Lakeside Use Area provides a more primitive camping option with pets, featuring fewer campsites and greater isolation for those seeking a quieter experience with their dogs. The campsites remain remarkably uncrowded even during peak season, with some visitors reporting being the only campers present except during major holiday weekends. Veterinary services are limited in this rural area, so campers should bring pet first aid supplies and any necessary medications.

    Mitchell KOA

    Great overnight spot in SD

We stayed here in our way to southwestern SD. It’s your typical KOA experience. Nice staff and decent facilities. Not really close to much but only a short drive into Mitchell. There’s a small pool and a nice dog park. Many of the sites have large shade trees. Overall a pleasant experience.

    Famil-E-Fun Campground & RV Park

    Peaceful, well maintained campground

Campers were mostly in RVs, I was in a tent and not surrounded by many others. Bathrooms and showers were very clean and well maintained and the owner was nice and gave us tips on things to do in the rest of South Dakota!

    North Point Recreation Area

    Camping on the River

This was a very pleasant surprise. I normally do not go to campsites (that is put in for context) but was passing through on a business trip and needed a place with electric hookups. After a Harvest Host disaster I found this. Like I said, very pleasantly surprised. While there were a lot of campers who seemed to be setting up elaborate sites with everything you would need to live there for a year (laundry lines, flag poles, pens for their dog), I was able to get a spot that backed right up to the beautiful river and had plenty of space on all sides. The campsite was surprisingly quiet for how large it was. The sunset paddle boarding on the river was a real treat. Kinda cool to say you SUP'd from South Dakota to Nebraska with a beer on the board.

Bathrooms were clean and had showers. Garbage and recycling on premises. AT&T signal was strong.

    Leave no trace.

    Hills RV Park

Close to the interstate for easy access, yet surrounded by Sourh Dakota corn fields

An excellent choice for staying if traveling across South Dakota. The sites are gravel, but are all pull through. Most are full hookup, but there is a on site dump station for those with electric only. The swimming pool was an absolute total plus for a hot July day. The park owner Nancy is a fantastic host. Definitely a stay again park

Snake Creek Recreation Area — Snake Creek State Recreation Area

    Snake Creek Campground SD

This is a pretty park, probably primarily used by families that are boating or fishing the Missouri River. Playground for kids. Clean restrooms, was quiet at night. We stayed here one night in our small RV on June 3rd, 2015. We could not find any camping available along Interstate 90 while heading west, and got lucky with a cancelation at this park. We had to travel 20 miles out of our way to camp!! Lesson learned to plan ahead while traveling through South Dakota.

    Butte City Park

    Passing Through

Good little spot in a small town. Electrical hook ups but no water. There was a spigot for water but it wasn’t turned in. A couple of porta potties there but we didn’t use them. Room for only one camper with hookups but room for another camper or 2 to park. Some noise from the highway which is right by the park but it wasn’t bad. There’s a playground for the kids. We had our two dogs with us and didn’t see any signs about no pets.

    River City Campground

    Did Not Meet the Mark

We had read that this campground (CG) could be confusing to find, but following our GPS and the confirmation email instructions, we had no major issues. Coming off I-90, we turned right at a Food Mart and followed the road and“River City” sign through a small industrial area that borders the CG. Per the email, we drove straight in and went to our assigned pull-through site 90 with full hookups. The gravel site was level, with utilities placed toward the rear and the sewer hookup at the very end. We needed 20’ of sewer hose. Water pressure was decent (~45 psi) and the 50-amp electric worked well. After setting up, we picked up an envelope from the info board that his additional CG info by the one-room shower house and paid the required $50 cash for our overnight stay. The email mentioned we could contact the camp host if needed. We had 2 bars on Verizon and 3 on T-Mobile. There would be no issues with satellite reception—there are no mature trees. There’s no CG Wi-Fi. There’s one row of pull-through sites that are packed tightly together. This seems to be where the overnighters go. Each has a metal-wheel fire pit, but if your neighbor lights a fire, it could be dangerously close to your rig. Our site had no picnic table, although most others did. This is a newer CG still under development—some grass and patios were going in, likely catering to seasonal boaters and full-timers (based on the number of older rigs). There’s no designated dog area, and green space is limited. The grounds currently feel more like a dusty parking lot, and we noticed heavy truck traffic on the entry road during the day. Most of the CG sites are back-ins with better spacing between sites. The CG is a few miles away from the interstate so none of that noise. There’s a pleasant view of nearby hills. We often travel through South Dakota and were hoping River City could be a destination stop. This time we were here to see the Dignity of Earth and Sky statue. At $50, and with the current layout and conditions, it wasn’t worth it—even just for an overnighter.

    Pease Creek Recreation Area

Bald Eagles were our only company.

This is a very well maintained campground. We were here from December 08 through 12, 2024. Bathrooms and showers, along with water faucets, are all shut down for the season. We stayed on site 9 and enjoyed the shelter all the trees provided. Wind was 24 mph gusts hit 45 mph and didn't affect us at all. Sites are gravel and, for the most part, level. We didn't require any leveling blocks at all. 50 - 30 - 20 amp service with no errors at the electric box. The pit toilet was reasonably clean and stocked. Small playground for children. Small picnic area down the road between sites 8 and 9. Sites 4 and 8 were covered with large seed pods from the trees. I imagine it would sound like branches hitting your camper when they fall in the fall. We are not far from the Missouri River, and we were delighted with the company of 4 Bald Eagles. Hundreds of migrating Canadian Geese. Walking paths are available along with a boat ramp down the hill. Cost is the same in nearly all South Dakota State Parks, $26.00 a night. Seems costly for no water, flush toilets, showers, or garbage dumpsters. This is a nice place.
