Cabin Area — Niobrara State Park

    Beautiful area to explore

This campground features cabins and tent camping. Designed for families, there is a playground and lots of open space for the kids to run around. Pets are welcome. There is a small pond stocked for fishing right in the middle of the tent camping area. Take a short hike to see where the Niobrara river dumps into the Missouri and take in some of the best views in Nebraska. In the winter months, hunters often use the cabins as home base and hunt in the surrounding woods.

    Butte City Park

    Passing Through

Good little spot in a small town. Electrical hook ups but no water. There was a spigot for water but it wasn’t turned in. A couple of porta potties there but we didn’t use them. Room for only one camper with hookups but room for another camper or 2 to park. Some noise from the highway which is right by the park but it wasn’t bad. There’s a playground for the kids. We had our two dogs with us and didn’t see any signs about no pets.

    Great Spot!

All around beautiful place. We had a great camping experience this summer. The grounds were clean, beautiful scenery, pet friendly and fun hiking trails! There's a lot of really cool cabins to choose from and the tent camping areas are in great locations scattered around the park. Definitely for the 3 hour drive up there.

    Spencer Park Fairgrounds

Basic campground near the South Dakota border

Spencer Park Fairgrounds in Spencer, Nebraska is a basically a square grass lot with campsites along one side. It's quiet and peaceful here. Each site has electric and water hookups. There is a dump station about a block away. The rate is $20/night and there is a drop box by the bathrooms.

You'll enter through the fairgrounds parking lot which is gravel and fairly bumpy. They don't have individual picnic tables or fire rings at the campsites, but I did notice a stack of fire rings sitting nearby, so it looks like they might put them out by the sites occasionally. For amenities, there's a public pool right there on the fairgrounds and a brand-new playground.

The bathrooms have concrete walls and concrete floors, and everything seemed very clean. It’s a single-occupancy setup with one shower, so only one person can use the bathroom or shower at a time.

I had a great Verizon 5G signal here with 350Mpbs down and 50Mbps up.

Modern Campground — Niobrara State Park

    Beautiful campground

This campground is so nice. Electric hookup only, but full and dump station is close and nicely laid out. Campsites have lots of trees. It was quiet and peaceful. There are trails to hike and sites to see nearby. There is not a place to get diesel nearby, so plan for that if you need too. Sportsmen’s Bar & Two Rivers Hotel is a nice place to eat that’s nearby. No fuss, good food. There are however, a tremendous amount of ticks. If you bring pets, you may think about them not joining you on hikes.

    Butte City Park

Small town city park offers inexpensive camping

Butte City Park in Butte, Nebraska, has about three or four RV sites available. There are gravel parking areas for two campers with 30 amp electrical hookups and space for maybe two other rigs without electricity. I found the sites to be very level. You could probably fit up to a 30 foot rig here (total - including the tow vehicle or toad). There is no shade for the campsites. There is one water spigot available to share for all the sites. There might be a place to empty your tanks; I found a PVC pipe sticking up out of the ground with a screw-cap on it, but there was no sign indicating it was for dumping.

The park has several playground areas and two picnic shelters, one small and one large. There are basketball courts on-site as well. There is a brand new restroom building, though it is currently under construction inside and not yet complete. The park is located right next to a highway, but it is not super busy and I did not notice any bothersome noise.

The nightly rate is $10 or $60 for the week. There is a payment drop box located in the downtown area. This is about a 10 minute walk or a couple minute drive from the park.

I had a good Verizon 5G signal here with 350 Mbps download and 30 Mbps upload. I also had a 5G signal from T-Mobile with 150 Mbps download and 25 Mbps upload.

    Tyndall City Park

    Color me surprised;)

More then once as a Dyrt Ranger I have searched in vain for a campsite listed on a map. I was completely surprised when I found the Tyndall City Park AND it had places to camp!

When you first drive to the park it looks like your typical city park, nice fishing pond for the kids , cemented walking path, ballfields, disc golf, etc. But then down at the very end next to the ballfields are electric hookups and parking for RVs! Mind you this is no luxury campground, it’s the basics. On further exploration of the immediate area I came to the conclusion that this site is probably mostly used by visiting participants in 4H. There is a 4H complex across the street from the hookups.

The park is located off the local neighborhood and quiet. There is no shade at the RV sites. No picnic tables or fire rings on the cement lot where the electric boxes are located. This is definitely an event oriented “campground” or overnight/visiting relatives pit stop. There is an honor box and small latrine near the sites. No privacy if it’s busy but we were totally alone and saw few people when we visited.

The dogs enjoyed the walk around the fishing pond and it was a very relaxed atmosphere, at least to me. I did not attempt to start a fire, no one to ask if I could and no fire rings. There was a grass area by the camp sites with picnic tables and shade, you could easily put a tent/hammock in that area but I don’t know if it’s permitted.

Overall a useful area, in town, near shopping and fuel but not a vacation destination in my opinion.

    Mill Race Park & Campground

Small park outside of town with electric, level sites. Dusty.

Mill Race Campground is located right on the edge of town. The sites are either gravel or grass and are fairly level. This campground does not take reservations. You fill out a paper slip when you arrive and drop it in a box along with your payment. There are a lot of trees that provide some shade. The park has two storm shelters for inclement weather. The sites have electric, but no water and there is no dump station. There are a few water spigots at the campground but they are not easily accessible.  I would not count on being able to get water here. They are doing construction at the park (looks like a new picnic shelter), so perhaps this will change.

The road into the campground is gravel. Access to the nearby golf course is had through the park, so there is quite a bit of traffic. The road is a very fine, sandy gravel that gets dusty when cars drive through. The area is posted 15 mph but I see a lot of people going faster than that. It seems like every time I go for a walk I am getting chased by clouds of dust. I probably won't stay here again just for that reason.

There is a bathroom building, but it is pretty basic but clean. It has one shower and one bathroom stall. There is a nice, paved walking trail that divides the golf course and the campground. It is about a half mile long and is very scenic. There are benches along the path, and it goes through grasses and trees with a lot of birds and squirrels. The path smells like pine and blooming flowers.

This trail does not go all the way into town, so you have to walk or bike on the highway if you are not driving. It is about a 20 to 30 minute walk to get to downtown. Although the campground is located right on the highway, there is not much traffic on it and I didn't really notice any road noise.

I had great cellular signals here. I had a Verizon 5G signal with 350 Mbps down and 30 Mbps up. I also had a strong 5G signal on T-Mobile with 200 Mbps down and 30 Mbps up.

    North Point Recreation Area

    Camping on the River

This was a very pleasant surprise. I normally do not go to campsites (that is put in for context) but was passing through on a business trip and needed a place with electric hookups. After a Harvest Host disaster I found this. Like I said, very pleasantly surprised. While there were a lot of campers who seemed to be setting up elaborate sites with everything you would need to live there for a year (laundry lines, flag poles, pens for their dog), I was able to get a spot that backed right up to the beautiful river and had plenty of space on all sides. The campsite was surprisingly quiet for how large it was. The sunset paddle boarding on the river was a real treat. Kinda cool to say you SUP'd from South Dakota to Nebraska with a beer on the board.

Bathrooms were clean and had showers. Garbage and recycling on premises. AT&T signal was strong.

    Leave no trace.

Guide to Spencer

The Missouri River forms the border of Boyd County, where Spencer is located, with elevations near 1,500 feet across the area's rolling prairie landscape. Summer temperatures often reach 90°F while winter lows frequently drop below freezing. Camping options near Spencer range from developed fairground sites to primitive recreation areas along Lake Francis Case.

What to do

Water activities on Lake Francis Case: At North Point Recreation Area, visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, and swimming in the Missouri River. "We found this place to be quiet and peaceful. It has been dealing this year with high water and water damage to campsites and trails but the facilities are nice," notes Jeff N., who spent 4 days at the park.

Shoreline fishing opportunities: Multiple access points provide fishing from the banks. "Fishing from shore. Fishing: walleye northern pike sauger sunfish perch common carp black bullhead channel catfish smallmouth bass," writes one reviewer about South Shore Lakeside Use Area.

Hiking local trails: Trail options include North Shore Path at North Point, a 1.2-mile loop suitable for all hiking levels. "Enjoy watching the bald Eagles during the winter months," suggests N.I. about South Shore Lakeside Use Area's wildlife viewing opportunities.

What campers like

Spacious, shaded campsites: Pease Creek Recreation Area offers well-spaced sites with mature trees. "We stayed on site 9 and enjoyed the shelter all the trees provided. Wind was 24 mph gusts hit 45 mph and didn't affect us at all," shares Bibs O. after their December stay.

Convenient town access: Spencer Park Fairgrounds provides easy access to local services. "This is a very comfortable location with power, water and a nearby dump station. It's an easy walk to any place in town," says Les G. about staying at the fairgrounds.

Uncrowded beach areas: Less-frequented swimming spots offer more privacy. "Relative to North Point Rec Area, this campground and day use beach were significantly less crowded. All sites seemed to have some shade, picnic table, and fire pit," notes Katie L. about South Shore Lakeside Use Area.

What you should know

Weather considerations: Temperature fluctuations affect camping comfort throughout the year. "We arrived and only one other person was there...The night time low was about 43 degrees. I learned on another trip to pack all temperature range clothing especially this time of year," advises one camper.

Seasonal facility closures: Many campgrounds reduce services in off-season. "Bathrooms and showers, along with water faucets, are all shut down for the season," reports Bibs O. about winter camping at Pease Creek Recreation Area.

Reservation options: Most sites at Modern Campground — Niobrara State Park are available through reservation systems or as walk-ups. "Nebraska State Parks have walk up and reservable spaces. We usually risk it and easily found a walk up on a Monday afternoon after the weekend crowd left," explains Shari M.

Tips for camping with families

Playground facilities: Butte City Park provides playground equipment for children. "It's a city park, a playground. Portapotties on site. Found it on Dyrt so we are hoping it's okay to boondocks here," explains adelia about this pet-friendly camping option near Spencer.

Swimming beaches with amenities: Dedicated swimming areas provide safe water access. "Camp site was near beach, fishing dock and playground for the kids!" shares Rebekah M. about North Point Recreation Area.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Animal sightings offer educational experiences. "Enjoyed a hike with the interpreter. Worth a stop for sure," mentions Julie M. at Modern Campground, where formal interpretive programs complement the pet-friendly camping experience.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling requirements: RV pads vary in levelness across area campgrounds. "Sites are gravel and, for the most part, level. We didn't require any leveling blocks at all," notes Bibs O. about Pease Creek Recreation Area.

Electric service reliability: Carney Park provides dependable hookups for overnight stays. "Water and electric with pad and picnic tables and trees for $20! Also some tent sites," reports one reviewer about this pet-friendly camping option.

Dump station locations: Plan waste disposal accordingly. "Water and electric hookup only, but full and dump station is close and nicely laid out," explains Nicole T. about Modern Campground, noting that diesel fuel isn't readily available nearby.
