Lake Wateree State Park Campground accommodates pets across tent and RV campsites with full hookups. The park's pet policy requires leashed dogs throughout the camping areas and trails, with easy access to shoreline areas where dogs can cool off. Broad River Campground, another pet-friendly option near Winnsboro, offers RV sites with full hookups, while Rosewood Farm and Agripark features a pet-friendly cabin nestled beside a small pond at the bottom of a hill and surrounded by trees. Alston Trailhead provides free primitive camping with pet access. Most campgrounds maintain clean facilities, with Lake Wateree offering exceptionally well-maintained shower houses that campers consider the standard they compare other campgrounds against.

Pet-friendly hiking options include the Palmetto Trail accessible from Alston Trailhead, with walk-in campsites available right behind the trailhead signs in the trees. Broad River Campground has an extensive trail system behind the property that many campers discover while exploring with their dogs. Lake Wateree provides shoreline areas where pets can enjoy water access, though visitors note that kayak launch points can be limited. Campers should prepare supplies in advance, as many of these campgrounds are located considerable distances from stores and supplies. Mosquitoes can be problematic for both humans and pets during warmer months, particularly at Lake Wateree, so appropriate repellents are recommended. Train noise occasionally disrupts Alston Trailhead campers when trains pass on nearby tracks.

      Dreher Island State Park Campground

      Camper Cabins R Great!

My bf and I rented a camper cabin-electricity, heat, air, bunkbeds + full bed…secluded from the rest of the park, located on its own loop, separate showers(2) + 3 stalls + changing room in the public restrooms…AND IT WAS ALL VERY CLEAN! Very helpful and friendly park rangers available, but not ā€œin your faceā€ šŸ˜‰ We had a wonderful time! Kayaking, paddle boarding(both mine) and brought our boat to put in at their small, but efficient, Marina! Beautifully well kept grounds…but left to age untrained on ginormously stellar Lake Murray, South Carolina(Mid-state) I would HIGHLY recommend a visit/stay to this family, pet, everyone friendly State Park!!!

      Sesquicentennial State Park Campground

In the middle of Columbia SC

Built to celebrate the Sesquicentennial of South Carolina in the 30’s . At one time on the furthest outskirts of Columbia SC. It is now firmly in the muddle of the Metro area. Plenty of trailer sites. Tent site and primitive camping. Has recreational areas. Restaurants and shopping nearby

      Dreher Island State Park Campground

      Family Adventures on Lake Murray

I loved how Dreher Island State Park in South Carolina gave our family the best of both safety and fun, with shaded, roomy sites that included picnic tables, fire rings and well-kept bathhouses that made camping easy with kids. The campground sits right on Lake Murray, so the kids spent hours swimming, skipping rocks and spotting herons, while short hiking trails gave them just enough adventure without wearing them out. With boat ramps, fishing spots and wide-open lake views, it felt like a true escape, yet I had peace of mind knowing everything was family-friendly and close by when we needed it. Evenings ended around the campfire with tired, happy kids and a beautiful lakeside sunset.Ā  I would highly recommend this place!

Very cute place in Kinard, SC

Office was very friendly. They take you to your site which we always so appreciate. Hookups are modern, nice dog park, propane tank for easy fill ups. Fresh donuts anytime, pizza and chicken wings (bone in and bone out) til 6. Very clean and well maintained. Site was perfect for our 43’ Motorhome and dolly. Would definitely stay again.

      Sesquicentennial State Park Campground

      Decent campground

Busy park, but if you're visiting the Columbia area a fine place to stop. They have a dog park and our pup loved getting to run off leash. Campsites are pretty close together and some are a little on top of each other but we were in spot 79. It was a pull through and the living space was separated a bit more. It was across from the bathhouse which is quite convenient.

    Guide to Winnsboro

Lake Wateree dominates the camping landscape around Winnsboro, South Carolina, with the 21-mile reservoir offering multiple waterfront camping options. Located in the Piedmont region at approximately 230 feet elevation, the area experiences mild winters and hot, humid summers with average July temperatures reaching 91°F. Campgrounds range from state parks with full amenities to primitive sites along the Palmetto Trail.

    What to do

Boating and fishing access: Lake Wateree State Park Campground offers boat docks where campers can tie up their boats directly at many lakefront sites. "Great boat docks. Friendly rangers. Very quiet and relaxing place. Mainly water activities," notes one visitor. The lake supports multiple fish species with both shore fishing and boat-based angling opportunities.

Disc golf course: Chester State Park Campground features a professional disc golf course that draws enthusiasts from surrounding areas. A reviewer mentions, "Beyond the campsite, there is an amazing seating area near the fishing dock, with multiple hanging bench swings, communal fire pits and a great view of the lake. There was a nice trail around the lake, peddle boat rentals, and a world class frisbee golf course."

Trail exploration: The extensive trail system behind Broad River Campground provides opportunities for hiking and wildlife viewing. "There's a bunch of trails behind the campground. I don't think a lot of people knew the scope of how extensive the trail system was - but it was really pretty back there and we explored and found a lot of beautiful little places," shares one camper who spent time exploring the area.

    What campers like

Lake views and access: Campers consistently rate Andrew Jackson State Park Campground highly for its lake views. "We stayed on site 16 right on the lake. Beautiful views. Our site was very steep, so took a lot to get level, but it was ok," notes one visitor. The park offers water access for kayaks and canoes with proper planning for stumps in the water.

Privacy between sites: Several campgrounds offer good separation between campsites. Chester State Park receives praise for its layout: "While some sites have wonderful views of the lake, these two sites had a nice grassy area, big enough for some corn hole, frisbee or some tag. It also had a few options for hammocks."

Clean facilities: Bathhouses and common areas receive consistent high marks across multiple campgrounds. "The bathhouse is up to date, clean and well stocked," notes a Chester State Park visitor. Another camper at Lake Wateree State Park commented, "We have been camping here for years and we love the camp ground. Bathrooms are all remodeled and super clean."

    What you should know

Distance from supplies: Most Winnsboro area campgrounds are significantly removed from shopping areas. A Lake Wateree visitor warns: "The park is about 25 minutes from any stores, but they keep their shop extremely well stocked." Similarly, at Broad River Campground, a camper noted: "Campground is pretty far from restaurants, grocery stores, etc so plan accordingly."

Site leveling challenges: Several campgrounds feature sloped sites that can be challenging for RVs. A camper at Andrew Jackson State Park mentioned, "Our site was very steep, so took a lot to get level, but it was ok." Pack leveling blocks and be prepared to adjust.

Noise considerations: Alston Trailhead offers free camping but comes with train noise. "Nice spot for overnight car camping. However, freight trains run along the nearby tracks about every 2hrs. So, if you're a light sleeper, you might want to look elsewhere," cautions one visitor. Another camper added, "The only problem is the train. It woke us up at least 4 times last night. You can see the train from your campsite."

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly water areas: Lake Wateree State Park provides shallow swimming areas ideal for children. One visitor shared, "The swimming area is by the office/shop. There is a really lovely strip of shaded picnic tables where we spent the hottest hours of the day. The water is pretty shallow, so the littlest ones had plenty of space to play and swim without us having to worry."

Biking opportunities: Flat terrain at some campgrounds makes for easy biking with children. "The grounds are fairly flat so bike riding is great," notes a Lake Wateree camper. Sesquicentennial State Park also offers cycling opportunities on its trails.

Wildlife viewing: Many dog-friendly campgrounds near Winnsboro offer wildlife spotting opportunities. A visitor to Sesquicentennial mentions, "I love going to this campground, I enjoy doing the trails and spotting dear. And there is a small water play area for children." Bring binoculars for better wildlife viewing chances.

    Tips from RVers

Full hookup availability: Wateree Lake RV Park & Marina offers complete services for larger rigs. "This location has 2 RV lots. Riverside is heavily wooded which provides a ton of shade on the hot summer days. Taylor Creek is newer with less trees providing lots of open space and great for Solar regeneration," shares a recent visitor.

Site selection for larger rigs: Some campgrounds have limitations for bigger RVs. A camper at Andrew Jackson State Park noted, "It is a great campground but tight fit for our 30 foot camper." Request specific sites when making reservations if you have a larger rig.

Internet connectivity: For those needing to stay connected, connectivity varies significantly across campgrounds. At Wateree Lake RV Park, a camper reported, "Also had better than average/strong Wi-Fi!" Meanwhile, at Wateree Military Recreation Area, "T mobile service doesn't work at all, but they have Wi-Fi hotspots for rent for $5 per day."
