    Dreher Island State Park Campground

    Camper Cabins R Great!

My bf and I rented a camper cabin-electricity, heat, air, bunkbeds + full bed…secluded from the rest of the park, located on its own loop, separate showers(2) + 3 stalls + changing room in the public restrooms…AND IT WAS ALL VERY CLEAN! Very helpful and friendly park rangers available, but not “in your face” 😉 We had a wonderful time! Kayaking, paddle boarding(both mine) and brought our boat to put in at their small, but efficient, Marina! Beautifully well kept grounds…but left to age untrained on ginormously stellar Lake Murray, South Carolina(Mid-state) I would HIGHLY recommend a visit/stay to this family, pet, everyone friendly State Park!!!

Winfield - J Strom Thurmond Lake

    Quiet Lakeside Campground

Winfield is a compartively little-known USACE campground situated on a peninsula near the more heavily-traffic Mistletoe State Park. Quiet and peaceful, it's tucked up the Little River and therefore not on the main body of Clarks Hill Lake (Lake Strom Thurmond, if you're form South Carolina) which sees a good deal of boat traffic (pontoon boats in particular) in the summer months. Great for water activities (kayaking, SUP, etc) with awesome evening views.

    Dreher Island State Park Campground

    Peaceful, but a little busy

This campground is a popular spot in South Carolina. Campsites are pretty close together but it's usually peaceful - lakeside sites, good fishing, but be prepared for the mosquitos!

    Dreher Island State Park Campground

    Family Adventures on Lake Murray

I loved how Dreher Island State Park in South Carolina gave our family the best of both safety and fun, with shaded, roomy sites that included picnic tables, fire rings and well-kept bathhouses that made camping easy with kids. The campground sits right on Lake Murray, so the kids spent hours swimming, skipping rocks and spotting herons, while short hiking trails gave them just enough adventure without wearing them out. With boat ramps, fishing spots and wide-open lake views, it felt like a true escape, yet I had peace of mind knowing everything was family-friendly and close by when we needed it. Evenings ended around the campfire with tired, happy kids and a beautiful lakeside sunset.  I would highly recommend this place!

    Heritage RV Park

Great place for an over night stay.

This is a very well-kept campground. There is no bath house or laundry on premises but there is a very nice dog park. It is mostly gravel with one or two streets being sand and all the sites are back in except one which we thought we were going to get but I guess someone called before we did and got it. Our site was level and we were able to set up quickly with the help of Mike the office manager. There is nothing for kids to do here so be advised the gravel becomes a toy! It was great for a night stay. Right off the interstate with lots of stores nearby including Walmart and Camping world.

    Mistletoe State Park Campground

    Waterfront seclusion

We camped in one of the tent only walk-in sites located on a peninsula jutting into the lake. We had a ton of stuff, not realizing it was an uphill and pretty long trek, but it was totally worth it. We had the whole place to ourselves, no neighbors, in late March. The sun setting over the water was beautiful, it was quiet even as a few motor boats came in for the night. There is a tiny beach on the tip of the peninsula, picnic tables, and an outhouse. It was my favorite spot of everywhere we stayed on an Alabama-Georgia-South Carolina roadtrip including AirBnB and bed and breakfast.

Guide to Warrenville

Aiken State Park and surrounding campgrounds provide diverse camping options in the eastern portion of South Carolina, situated in the Sandhills region with elevations around 300-400 feet. The area experiences mild winters and hot summers, with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F from June through September. Sandy soil conditions throughout local campgrounds affect tent staking and RV leveling requirements.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Lick Fork Lake Recreation Area maintains a small fishing lake surrounded by primitive campsites. "Nice little lake to fish and some short trails. Nice and quite. No water or electricity on the sites," notes Swain K., who managed to navigate a 36-foot fifth wheel into the area.

Kayaking excursions: Aiken State Park offers kayaking access on the Edisto River. "So worth the trip! Beautiful hour long paddle from Aiken St Park," writes Muffy S., who gave the experience five stars. The park maintains a designated kayak launch area accessible from the campground.

Mountain biking trails: Petersburg - J Strom Thurmond Lake provides access to the Bartram Trail system. Todd C. mentions, "Bartram Trail, terrific mountain for biking and hiking passes through the property." The trail offers multiple access points directly from the campground for both day rides and longer routes.

Hiking options: Mistletoe State Park contains several hiking paths of varying difficulty. Andy S. reports, "For the hikers the trails are great, and very in difficulty to keep things fun and the backwoods hiking camp sights were great." The park maintains both day-use trails and backcountry camping options accessible via hiking paths.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Petersburg Campground receives positive feedback for site spacing. Alex C. shares, "They're also pretty well spaced out for privacy and plenty of space for each site." Most sites feature natural buffers between camping areas, providing separation from neighboring campers.

Clean facilities: Sandy Oak RV Park maintains well-kept amenities. Ellen A., who needed a quick overnight stop, noted, "Shower, bathroom and laundry. Wow!" The park provides these facilities for both overnight and extended-stay campers.

Night sky viewing: Petersburg Campground offers excellent stargazing conditions. Christine mentions, "dark starry night skies," among the amenities at this Army Corps of Engineers facility. The campground's location away from major urban centers reduces light pollution for astronomical observation.

Wildlife sounds: Aiken State Park offers natural night sounds. Jay B. reports, "We are tent campers and slept with no rain fly, looking at the stars and listening to coyotes howl at night." The park's natural setting allows for immersive wildlife experiences, particularly at primitive camping sites.

What you should know

Limited cell service: Some campgrounds have spotty connectivity. Charles H. noted about Lick Fork Lake, "There was some cell coverage as well," suggesting service might be intermittent in this more remote area.

Distance from town: Some campgrounds require planning for supplies. Kristin E. cautions about Aiken State Park, "This campground is 20 miles from town. it is a long way out." Campers should bring necessary supplies to avoid long drives.

Seasonal water levels: Lake access varies throughout the year. Andy S. observes about Mistletoe's backcountry sites, "If the water is low like it was when I was here, the lake water was not accessible -- you'd have to trudge through 50 fifty feet of mud to get to it." Spring visits offer better water access than late summer or fall.

Storm damage awareness: Recent weather events have affected some facilities. Kennon H. notes, "Hurricane damage is every where. Only one hiking trail is open. Keep an eye out for broken limbs on windy days." Check park websites for current trail and facility conditions before visiting.

Tips for camping with families

Swimming areas: Mistletoe State Park Campground provides designated swimming spots. Stephanie K. observed, "Lots of water activities," making this a good option for families seeking water recreation beyond fishing.

Playground access: Aiken State Park includes areas specifically for children. Jessica K. details, "In the main park there is a few fishing ponds with the ability to rent Kayaks, a spring fed pond with a swimming area, hiking trails, playground and also bathrooms and picnic tables."

Dog friendly campgrounds near Warrenville: Carolina Hill Mobile Home and RV Park welcomes pets in a quiet setting. Bobbie S. reports, "Zero road noise, large sites, shade trees and laundry room," adding, "If you walk around the park four times, you have walked a mile" - perfect for exercising dogs.

Fishing program for kids: Mistletoe State Park supports young anglers. Amy C. mentions, "Free fishing pole for kids," which eliminates the need for families to pack additional equipment when camping with children interested in fishing.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategies: Petersburg - J Strom Thurmond Lake offers varied RV spots. Rick G. advises, "As with all campgrounds, some sites are better than others. But, wouldn't complain about any if just staying a few nights." Waterfront sites are particularly popular with RVers.

Leveling challenges: Sandy soil at campgrounds around Warrenville can complicate RV setup. At Aiken State Park, Jen reported, "We had to switch sites when we arrived due to a space issue. We have a 32' RV and the site stated a max of 35' but there was a tent pad that would have interfered with us being level."

Water access details: Verify available hookups before booking pet-friendly campgrounds near Warrenville. Jerry F. notes about Petersburg, "Sites and grounds are well kept. Bathhouses are well maintained," but many sites lack sewer connections despite having water and electric.

Gate code systems: After-hours arrival requires preparation. Cathy C. shares about Aiken State Park, "Kudos to the park staff for calling the day before to see if we needed firewood, and give us the gate code in case we were going to be late." Request this information when making reservations for late check-ins.
