Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Travelers Rest, SC

Paris Mountain State Park Campground offers pet-friendly sites throughout its wooded grounds with water and electric hookups. Travelers Rest-North Greenville KOA welcomes dogs at all accommodation types including tent sites, RV spots, cabins, and glamping options. Both campgrounds maintain standard pet policies requiring dogs to be leashed and supervised at all times. Table Rock State Park Campground and Jones Gap State Park Campground also permit pets at their established campsites. Most campgrounds provide picnic tables and fire rings at pet-friendly sites, with bathrooms and shower facilities nearby. Campground roads and surrounding trails allow for dog walking, though sites can be unlevel due to the mountainous terrain.

Hiking trails throughout the Paris Mountain area provide excellent opportunities for exercising dogs while camping. The lakeside paths at Paris Mountain State Park are particularly suitable for dogs, with the trail around Lake Placid offering gentle terrain and water access. Campers should pack extra water for pets, especially during summer months when temperatures can rise significantly. Local wildlife considerations include keeping dogs leashed to prevent encounters with deer, raccoons, and occasional black bears in the mountain areas. Several campgrounds in the region remain open year-round for pet-friendly camping, though the Davidson River Campground operates seasonally from March through November. The campground roads at Paris Mountain can be narrow and twisty, requiring caution when arriving with larger RVs and trailers with pets on board.

    Travelers Rest-North Greenville KOA

    Ranger Review: Travelers Rest KOA

Very pretty campground in the fall. Operators live onsite and were friendly. Full connections and no issues leveling. Easy in/out and close to Greenville, Paris Mountain, Travelers Rest, Swamp Rabbit Trail etc. Bathhouses were very clean, but the lights are on motion detectors which weren’t sensitive enough to pick you up in the shower. We both had a couple moments of total darkness to contend with. A camp cat hung around our site at times and loved the heat coming out of our furnace. We don’t have pets so didn’t mind. Cell coverage was great (att & Verizon), so we had no issues working our 9-5s. Love the bubbling creek next to our site, which was so pretty from our back window. We’d definitely stay again.

    GSP RV PARK

    Nice park, nice people

This is a well-maintained park with very friendly staff and guests. Spacious dog park, fresh gravel in the spots, fire pit area with string lights. We had a change of plans the morning of checkout, and they let us check out a little late since the park wasn’t fully booked, which was so helpful and kind of them. The park is centrally located near downtown Greer (very cute with lots of shops and restaurants) and a short drive from Greenville and Travelers Rest. We will definitely be back while passing through this area next time!

    Asheville West KOA

Far enough away to feel like camping and still close to the city

The Asheville KOA is very pet and RV friendly. There are a number of walking trails of easy to moderate difficulty that run throughout the property. The dog park is a great place to let the pups off of the leashes for a bit. Staff pickup trash daily between 10-11AM at your site, but dumpsters are easily accessible.

We camped here in our 22' travel trailer. The back in sites are mostly level with a mix of dirt and gravel. If you're looking for a sunny spot, request one of the even-numbered back-ins. If you would prefer to be mostly in the shade, go for an odd-numbered spot. 20/30/50 amp electric, cable, water and sewer were easily accessible at each site. Camp sites are not very large, so be mindful of volume and lights with respect to your neighbors.

    Broken Oak Organics

    Serene location

We stayed at the farm for a week. The rv site has a nice concrete pad, a picnic table, two Adirondack chairs and a metal fire pit. There are three tent camp sites by the river. The rv site is next to a building which is unoccupied and unused. We felt we had complete privacy at the site. The rv site has an electric and water hook up. The bathhouse has a shower with great water pressure, a sink and toilet. Someone cleaned it during our stay. It is shared by all campers, but this worked well during our stay. Craig the owner was very responsive to any questions. The farm is close to Travelers Rest and multiple state parks. We would gladly return.

Four Paws Kingdom Campground & Dog Retreat

    Awesome for dogs and people!

We camped here back in August and had a blast! We brought our two dogs and they also had a great time. This site is very dog friendly (obviously), with many sites having their own fenced in yards. We opted for a site without a fence, which we regretted once we got there. The gravel at our site was painful for our dog’s feet and they had a hard time walking on it. The dog parks made up for this! There are multiple large dog parks located at the campground. The restrooms were awesome, but are single person use only. We felt like we were the only ones using them (that’s how well maintained they were). Campsites are close together but we didn’t mind. The staff was great, they helped us find our site and even helped us back our camper in. There was power and water hookup at each site. There is tons of stuff to do around the area too. Chimney Rock and Lake Lure are right around the corner and SO FUN.

    Bent River Equestrian

Great camping near mountain biking and hiking

Great place to spend a couple of nights. Went over Labor Day weekend with 5 or 6 other groups and still felt like we had full privacy. Fire pits, an outdoor shower, and a porta-potty. Cute horses and barn cats to pet and watch

    Asheville West KOA

    Nice stay.

Other than rain almost every day, we enjoyed this spot while checking out Asheville and Biltmore Estate. The campground is very wooded, allowing for shady space. The showers were decently clean. Garbage is picked up at your site, or you can recycle next to the shower house which is not located far for the back section, which we were in, with full hookups. We enjoyed the trail through the woods that circles the whole campground. Our dog enjoyed the dog park. There is a pool and camp store.

    Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground

Not quite great for a senior

Great and clean unless you have a very active dog and you're sorta out of shape. Their dog park extremely small and hilly and has holes you need to watch. The yellow jackets were terrible and I got stung while just sitting at our site. Also a hike to take garbage to their dumpster. Some sort of pickup or maybe bear proof cans half way point, also more flat area for dog walks. If they would take in some of the area around the horse shoe area that would help too .

Guide to Travelers Rest

Travelers Rest camping destinations range from mountainous to riverside settings, with elevations between 1,100 and 3,500 feet creating variable camping conditions throughout the seasons. Fall brings temperatures between 40-75°F while summer highs can reach the mid-90s with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Riverside camping options feature rocky terrain along gentle flowing waters suitable for wading and fishing.

What to do

Kayaking on Lake Jocassee: Access the pristine waters directly from Devils Fork State Park Campground where water clarity is exceptional for viewing underwater features. "Have waited six months into our RV life to start reviews for fair comparisons. Spent 4 nights here. Mortified to say that this was our first time here despite living in Charleston, SC for over 10 years. What a gem! Fabulous solid hiking including waterfalls and biking even around the park's roads."

Mountain biking from campsite: Direct trail access available at Davidson River Campground with routes for beginner to advanced riders. "Located right inside Pisgah National forest this campground is perfectly set for all adventures. If you're looking to see the sights of the forest and take a drive the scenic parkway then youve come to the right campground. On the other hand if you're thinking of riding the mtb trails you're in luck. They start literally across the davidson river from the campground."

Trout fishing: Fish directly from riverbank campsites at Broken Oak Organics for brown and rainbow trout. "My family enjoyed the huge lawn for yard games, and the river was beautiful! Shallow enough for the kids play, with some nice spots to catch brown and rainbow trout. Bathroom and shower was really nice and clean. Fire pit was steps away overlooking the river."

What campers like

Private wilderness feel: Jones Gap State Park Campground offers trail-side sites spaced approximately a quarter mile apart. "The spots are clean and well maintained. As you're in a state park, you have the added benefit of a fire ring and tent pad, but no picnic table. However, unlike other state park campgrounds, each spot is about a quart mile from the next, so you feel like you have the mountain to yourself."

Cool mountain air: Sites at higher elevations provide natural cooling during summer months. "Jones Gap gives you the feeling of really being deep in the Appalachians. The rushing river and dense foliage with tons of mountain laurel makes the air seem so fresh. I love just coming here and hiking upstream and playing in the river."

Family activities: Orchard Lake Campground provides extensive kid-friendly amenities beyond traditional camping. "They have swimming, a little zip line. My then 7 year old played on it all day they even have a game room. This campground is wonderful! We found it out of an emergency stop and stayed for 5 nights. It is beautiful and has so much for the kids to do."

What you should know

Narrow access roads: Campground entrances require careful navigation, especially for larger vehicles. "The road through the park back to the campground is pretty narrow at some points - we don't know how we would have managed if we had met another RV! We have a 31' Class A and we managed fine, but I did hear some people with larger trailers having a harder time."

Site leveling challenges: Table Rock State Park Campground offers beautiful but occasionally uneven camping pads. "The campground was quiet and well shaded. Some of the sites needed a little rehab and weren't very flat. The bathrooms were definitely older, but very clean."

Seasonal restrictions: Several campgrounds operate with limited capacity during winter months. "I stayed here over New Year's and did a ranger-led First Day Hike. This is my favorite SC park (so far). Several waterfalls are in the area, plus fishing lakes and swimming beach."

Tips for camping with families

Water play options: Small children can wade safely in shallow streams adjacent to campsites at Jones Gap. "I used site 7 because an oncoming storm made me bug out of my trailside plans. Gorgeous site, a bit chilly by the river but beautiful and close enough to still use the park bathrooms! Sites are large and have varying degrees of privacy."

Kid-friendly hiking: Short waterfall trails under 2 miles available from most campgrounds. "We did a short day hike to check out the camp sites and look at the waterfalls. We went on the weekend and was pretty late start so we did have to wait a good while to be let in the park - minor annoyance but it was OK. The trails and the park are so very well kept up!"

First-timer camping spots: Black Forest Family Camping Resort offers cabins with electricity for families new to outdoor experiences. "These cabins may not be for everyone. They are pretty bare bones. The cabins have electricity, but the water pump is outside and the bathrooms and showers are communal (but clean). There is a full size bed and two bunk beds in each one."

Tips from RVers

Assistance with difficult sites: Staff at Solitude Pointe Cabins & RV Park provide backing help. "Small in size with only @14 rv sites, but huge in friendly staff and super helpful getting you in/out of your site. It is on a steep hill, but the camp hosts escort you to the site and help navigate your camper in if needed."

Concrete pads available: Several campgrounds offer stable concrete platforms to ease leveling challenges. "A wonderful campground run by friendly people. The sites are on level cement pads which makes set up easy. The paved, very wooded and private, and umbrellas with the picnic tables!"

Limited hookup options: Research specific sites for power needs and restrictions. "Close to Caesars Head and Table Rock. Full hookups, and the staff helps you back in and level up. Great service. Short drive to grocery and fresh produce stands."
