Plum Branch RV Park offers 45 sites with full hookups including 30/50 amp electrical service, making it a central option for RV camping in the Plum Branch area. The park is big-rig friendly with water and sewer connections at each site. Nearby, Elijah Clark State Park Campground provides year-round RV sites with electric hookups (both 30 and 50 amp options), water connections, and a sanitary dump station. For those seeking lakeside RV campgrounds, Petersburg Campground on J. Strom Thurmond Lake features spacious sites with water and electric hookups. "The sites are large and very private and most are on the water," notes one visitor who appreciated the pull-through site with gravel base that accommodated their rig easily.

Cell service varies significantly between campgrounds in the region, with some visitors reporting excellent coverage while others mention spotty connections depending on site location. Most RV parks in the area are pet-friendly, though specific restrictions may apply. Dump stations are available at Elijah Clark State Park and Petersburg Campground, but Plum Branch RV Park does not offer this amenity. Heritage RV Park in Augusta provides a more urban alternative with full hookup sites, including 50 amp service and big rig access. During peak seasons, especially fall when foliage attracts more visitors, advance reservations are strongly recommended as waterfront sites fill quickly. Access roads to most parks accommodate large motorhomes, though some interior campground roads may require careful navigation due to tight turns or tree coverage.

      Mistletoe State Park Campground

Gorgeous and Tranquil in the Woods

This place was so perfect and our first camping experience with our new 40 foot RV! Check-in was easy and they even let us change to a pull-through site last minute. The grounds were sooooo gorgeous! Trees everywhere. Walking trails. And of course the lake. We went during fall colors so it was really magical.

PROS: Clean restrooms, spacious RV sites (they felt very private), many bathhouses within walking distance, friendly staff, nice gift shop

CONS: wet firewood and of course you had to buy from them, playground very small- made more for toddlers/preschool age, less than 5 years old, long walk to the dumpsters

Petersburg - J Strom Thurmond Lake

      Beautiful campsites

This campground has magnificent views, spacious sites, picnic tables, firepits, power (30 and 50 amp) and water hookups, dump station, bathrooms, and groomed swimming area.

The site (21) was very easy to pull through and had a wonderful view of the lake. I had to try to see my neighbors at the next site because the foliage separated the sites well. I saw a grounds person actively maintaining the empty sites which explains how well kept this campground is. The access roads are well kept.

Watson Mill Bridge State Park Campground

      Great little state park

Real friendly staff. Nicely laid out, but I guess could be challenging for really big rigs. W & E with dump station and pretty good facilities

Cell coverage a little challenging but managed to get enough download for Visible to stream Netflix. Too many trees to break out Starlink

      Trails are a fun walk.

Winfield - J Strom Thurmond Lake

      Very nice place !

This place has some great sites. Our site was #25. It was a pull through with 30 and 50 amp plugs. It’s a level lot with a grill, fire ring, picnic table and another small table. It’s right on the lake. There is a retaining wall at the water so it’s about a 3” step to the water. We plan to bring a sep ladder next time. Beautiful place to spend your time camping.

Watson Mill Bridge State Park Campground

Small and nice, Great place for quiet

Large sites in a wooded area. Plenty of room with pull through and back in sites. Older campground but serene with great hiking trails and awesome scenery. We live very close to this park yet this was the first time camping here. This was the trial run for our latest rig so basically a shakedown cruise. The campsite was fairly level and with forest off the door side of the Camper. Only 30 A power here so we had to watch what we were running electrically. They did have 2 30A outlets but at this time we did not have the double 30 to 50 amp adapter. We will be staying here again whenever we want a quick weekend getaway.  we will be staying here again for memorial day weekend 2026

      Hamilton Branch State Park Campground

Great spacious site on the water, lots of privacy

We arrived at last light, and I am glad that we had daylight while we backed in. Lovely site, spacious. Sites 98 & 99  T off the connector road. Layout it such that your RV is parallel to the road, overlooking the water which is 80- 100 feet away. Your neighbors are a fair distance away, but your head and tail of the RV points to them- so once inside you're not even aware of them. We are 30 foot fifth wheel with F250, and i imagine the back-in would have been more challenging if 99 was occupied.  Nice family oriented park. Water and electric all good, dump station on way out.

Did not use facilities, but apparently showers and toilets are a little drive away.

Wood: We drove out of the park, turned left and found an honor-system wood kiosk on parallel road - just over the railroad tracks. $5 for a small bundle, but it was worth it to us.

      Leveling was not an issue.

Hosts keep site nice and clean,

Data: Visible worked great (25 mbs up & down, so no need to break out hotspots, Starlink etc

      Boss RV Park

      A very nice campground

The sites are mostly gravel with areas of dirt, but mine was level. I was near the bath house and laundry which were both clean and well maintained. The population looks like a mix of mostly long-term residents, with a few mid to short-term. It is a full hookup facility, and all my connections worked well.

      Aiken State Park Campground

      Amazing Find!

We stayed over on our way to Charleston, SC. We booked it online. We had no hookeups, but water and a dump station is available. There are hiking trails, canoeing, and fishing. The ranger was super friendly and they are pet friendly. We had to switch sites when we arrived due to a space issue. We have a 32’ RV and the site stated a max of 35’ but there was a tent pad that would have interfered with us being level. We were allowed to switch with no issues.

    Guide to Plum Branch

Camping near Plum Branch, South Carolina offers visitors access to several lakefront campgrounds along J. Strom Thurmond Lake, a 71,000-acre reservoir with 1,200 miles of shoreline. Summer temperatures often reach the 90s with high humidity, while winter nights can drop below freezing. The clay-rich soil in this region can become muddy after rain, affecting site conditions at primitive camping areas.

    What to do

Fishing access: Hester's Bottoms Family Campground provides excellent lake access for anglers, with most sites positioned directly on the waterfront. "Almost all the sites are lake front. Great family environment and the staff working there are very friendly. The lake is a good size lake and you can see for miles across," notes camper Ross P.

Water recreation: Big Water Marina & RV Park offers boat rentals, paddleboards, and kayaks for exploring the lake. "We love this spot. Most of the camp spots are not shaded, but right on the water. Boat rentals are available as well as paddle boards and kayaks," shares Sarah P.

Walking trails: The area features several walking paths around campgrounds and along shorelines. At Pointes West Army Resort, the lakefront peninsula sites provide scenic walking opportunities. According to Jason L., "Sites L, M, and N are all on a little peninsula that sticks out into Clarks Hill Lake, and are our personal favorites!"

    What campers like

Spacious waterfront sites: Campers appreciate the privacy and lake views at Pointes West Army Resort, especially during off-peak seasons. "My wife and I have stayed here three times in both early spring and mid-autumn. Two of those times we had the place to ourselves," reports Jason L.

Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain well-kept bathhouses and common areas. Bobby J. shared about his stay: "We had stayed before. (We as in myself, my 2 year old little girl and our 2 dogs). Camp grounds weren't too terribly over crowded when we arrived."

Family-friendly atmosphere: Campsites often accommodate families with amenities geared toward different age groups. At Big Water Marina & RV Park, one camper noted, "This campground was fun. My family and I enjoyed camping on the beach here by the lake. The campground had a lot to offer. There was a restaurant/bar, playground, Marina, stage with live bands."

    What you should know

Military access restrictions: Pointes West Army Resort is a military campground with potential access limitations. Rose S. simply states, "This is a military campground," which may affect reservation eligibility for non-military visitors.

Seasonal closures: Some camping areas close temporarily or have restricted access during certain times. Scott M. warns, "As of 3 August 2020, Primitive Camping and Semi-Hookup (Electric Only) Camping areas are closed at Pointes West. RV Camping is open, for local traffic only."

Pet restrictions: Campgrounds may have breed-specific pet policies. One Hester's Bottoms camper discovered this during their stay: "After being there for 3 days they then tell us our bully breed dogs are not allowed and we had to leave with no refund for our last night."

    Tips for camping with families

Entertainment options: Big Water Marina & RV Park offers multiple activities beyond camping. One visitor explains, "My kids had so much fun and can't wait to go camping here again" due to amenities like "a restaurant/bar, playground, Marina, stage with live bands."

Weather considerations: Summer storms can arise quickly on the lake. Bobby J. mentions how this affected his July 4th stay: "Camp grounds weren't too terribly over crowded when we arrived. However, throughout the day people showed up by the carloads to just hang out and party. Luckily, a light rain brought that to an end."

Site selection for children: Choose sites with adequate space for play. At Hester's Bottoms, Brenda L. observes, "The campsites are all a good size and not right next to each other. A lot are tucked away off the road a little and most are right on the water."

    Tips from RVers

Connectivity insights: For RV sites near Plum Branch, South Carolina, connectivity varies significantly. At Lake Thurmond RV Park (Plum Branch RV Park), Kevin H. provides detailed internet speed info: "I was right under a WiFi antennae, and managed a 4.5meg download and 4.48 upload. Cricket: 7.98dn, 0.84up; ATT: 27.69, 0.3 up; Visible: 7.2dn, 1.2up; Verizon: 44.9dn, 1.88 up; T-mobile mifi: no 4G nor 5G service."

Site surface considerations: RV pad construction varies among campgrounds. At Heritage RV Park, Andrew L. notes: "The pads for the back in smaller campers were sandy with a concrete pad next to it. The sand was impossible to keep out of the RV and we continuously had to sweep."

Rig size accommodations: Many RV sites can handle larger rigs, but proximity to neighbors varies. At Pointes West Army Resort, Judy W. mentions, "We were able to park our 44 ft. Fifth wheel with ease with little assistance from a park host. The only reason why I didn't give a 5 star was because we were very close to neighbors."
