Summer humidity and insects can affect the camping experience, particularly at Lee State Park where the equestrian facilities attract flies. A camper noted, "Lee State Park is a simple park. Bath houses were well kept. Only drawback would be this park is an equestrian park so you will most likely encounter flies during the warmer months." Mosquitoes can be problematic after rain, and many campgrounds feature sandy soil that may affect tent stakes and drainage. Full hookups are available at several campgrounds, though amenities vary significantly from basic facilities at wildlife areas to more developed sites at state parks.

Camping experiences in the Bishopville region often center around small water features, forested settings, and equestrian facilities. Lee State Park offers boardwalks, artesian wells, and frequent horse sightings that enhance the natural experience. Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge provides more restricted camping options primarily for educational groups and researchers. Most campgrounds maintain clean facilities with functioning bathhouses and moderate privacy between sites. The region generally offers quiet camping experiences away from urban centers, though proximity to amenities varies significantly. Water activities are limited compared to coastal regions, but several campgrounds offer small ponds, creeks, or lake access within driving distance.

Cheraw State Park Campground — Cheraw State Park

Very nice, calm spot and active hosts

For us this was a pleasant little stopover after a long drive. Nicely located next to a lake, there is also a nice little walk partially around the lake. It is a small campground with nice spots. The hosts where active and there if you wanted advice. At the campground you can't swim, but you can walk 10 minutes to a beachy area on the other site of the lake.

    Santee Lakes KOA

    Needs Work

We stay here twice both times were just OK. The pool is crowded and murky, suggesting it good us a good cleaning. We stay for 4th of July weekend and can only describe the experience as a free for all. With camper literally on top of each other and spreading into the next camp site. Our neighbor’s site consisted of a RV, a large six-person tent and a pick-up truck tent parked half on our site. We ventured down to the lake swimming area and doing doughnuts near or on top of the swim boundary line most of the day. To recap– can’t swim in the dirty pool and can’t swim in the lake. In fairness the KOA as made some improvement since our stay but not enough for us to go back.

Cheraw State Park Campground — Cheraw State Park

    VERY Nice campground!!

The camping spots were clean and well kept....some have water and electric hookups and some are more rustic. There are plenty of large spaces for RVs with lots of room around them for privacy. It felt very private even though there were people all around. The bathrooms and showers were amazingly clean and they had a giant heater you can turn on over the showers when it's cold outside! There is a lake with a swimming area that was also well-maintained and clean, it has a boardwalk that goes around a large portion of the lake that connects the campground with the beach are. You can rent kayaks and canoes to take out on the lake, and the fishing is excellent! They also have rental cabins by the swimming area but I've never stayed in one. It is a nice campground, quiet and great for children! I will definitely go back!

    Sesquicentennial State Park Campground

    Beautiful campground

Well spaced sites with good amenities. Set in the woods, making it easy to forget you're in Columbia! Quiet, lots of birds in the spring. Easy drive to Congaree, which we highly recommend.

    Cane Creek Park

Always a great time when we go

We have been here 3 times all for a week at a time and love it. Holidays usually have some activities for kids. The mini golf is free and a blast. The swim area is only open on Saturdays or you can drive to the day use side and be over there.

Longleaf Campground — Congaree National Park

    Quiet, wildlife, pines

After losing several nights of sleep at our previous campground, this one was a huge relief. Sites were spread out, but also the vibe was less “party all night” and more “sleep and then explore the park during the day.) Exactly my kind of vibe!

The first night got a lot of rain and storms and several of the campers from sites farther back left saying they were flooded out. Our site did have some water during the storm but it was gone by morning. The tent pad stayed fully drained.

The fireflies were very pretty and interesting. We saw other wildlife around the campground too. A lizard during a walk during the day. Many frogs during the rain at night.

The vault toilet was disgusting, covered in splattered poop and very smelly. I sometimes drove to the visitor center to use the flush toilet and sink there. I never did figure out where the spigot was at the visitor center, but I didn’t ask anyone (was going to fill up the morning we left, but they weren’t open/staffed yet).

We had Verizon service. Enough to use Google image search to look up plants, animals, and mushrooms we had found.
