Best RV Parks & Resorts near Saxton, PA

Raystown Lake / Saxton KOA at Four Seasons Campground provides full hookup RV sites with both 50-amp electrical service and sewer connections on gravel pads. Timber Run Campground, located nearby, maintains 67 sites with electrical hookups suitable for recreational vehicles. James Creek RV Resort by Rjourney accommodates large motorhomes with both 30-amp and 50-amp service options, though some sites lack sewer hookups. Most RV parks in the region remain open year-round, with Lake Raystown Resort offering waterfront sites for motorhomes. Site dimensions vary considerably between parks, with some offering spacious pull-through options while others feature tighter back-in spots. "Our site was a spacious pull through with great view of the mountain through the fall foliage."

Within 30 miles of Saxton, cell service varies dramatically between campgrounds, with several reviews noting spotty or non-existent coverage at certain parks. Access to some RV sites requires navigating mountain roads with occasional sharp turns or elevation changes. While dump stations are available at most parks, not all sites offer full hookups—particularly during peak seasons when partial hookup sites fill quickly. Pet-friendly RV sites exist at nearly all area campgrounds, though specific loops or sections may have restrictions. A camper noted: "Sites are gravel and most appeared to be level. A picnic table, fire ring, and lantern hook complete each site." Winter camping options remain limited, with several parks closing between mid-October and April, so advance reservations are essential for cold-weather RV travel.

    Twin Bridge Campground

    Great Site, Great Staff

Took our new Fifth Wheel for a shakedown trip and decided to try Twin Bridges Campground. Staff was polite, amenities are great and clean, and everyone was friendly and polite. Big spacious sites, and a honeywagon to make things easier (there weren't any full hookup sites the I saw besides the long term spaces). Would definatley stay here again.

    CUMBERLAND MD. CAMPGROUNDS. 1 & 2

On the Potomac and C & O Canal Trail

Canal Tunnel River Campground, Nov 2023 : This is a 1 3/4 mile walk along the C &O Canal Trail to the outskirts of Cumberland. We happened upon this empty campground while walking this trail. A fantastic museum is near that 1 3/4 mile point. The National Park Visitor Center is there as well which is very informative.
(70 yr olds in 17’ trailer). I rate based on desire for at least a moderate wilderness type experience w at least some camp site privacy. Usage during visit: Empty Site Privacy: No vegetation screen between sites. Site Spacing: Close, but more spacing than many private campgrounds. Site surface: Grass Reservations: I noticed Agee box at the entrance. Road Noise: This campground is not near a highway. Through Traffic in campground: No reason for through traffic.
Electric Hookup: I concluded the only sites with electricity are host sites. Sewer Hookup: No Dump Station: No Potable Water Available: Yes Bathroom: I did not see any, but probably removed for the season.
Showers: No. Pull Throughs: Some Cell Service (AT&T): Good Setting: Open grassy area with minimal shade along the Potomac River Weather: Sunny . Highs 60s and lows 30s during our stay in the area.
Bugs: Too cold. Solar: Great solar. Rig size: Seems that there would’ve no issue for larger rigs. Sites: Sites along the river are best in my opinion.

    Happy Hills Campground

    Lots of regulars

So this is my second time at Happy Hills Campground in Hancock, MD from June 25th-28th. It being relatively close to the home is the reason for choosing it because of doctor appts for the kids.

The site I was in (F1) was really small and very close to the neighboring site. We got lucky no one was camping next to us. It had full hook-ups (30amp/water/sewer) and a pull thru site with picnic table and fire ring. It was $40/night. This campground is mainly for monthly site rentals with more than 3/4 of them permanent sites.

Lots of golf cart and ATV traffic with no quiet hours that I am aware of. We weren't informed the pool would be open and you had to sign up for two hour timeslots to get in. This must have been information only available to the regulars here. Also cell service (Sprint roaming most of the time) is terrible and the campground wifi is spotty at best. The camp store was closed due to COVID so if needed anything you had to go to town.

Bathrooms were clean. Never checked out the showers but heard they were free.

    Overall, I wasn't a happy camper. I don't think I will be back.

    Black Moshannon State Park Campground

    No cell, no problem!

General: 73-site campground; most have electric hookups, and some are FHU. Pets are only permitted at selected sites. There are also 20 (13 rustic and 6 modern) cabins. Cell service is extremely limited to non-existent (Verizon).

Site Quality: Pads are gravel and most appeared to be level. Site 70 was at the end of the loop which is why we picked it. A picnic table, fire ring, and lantern hook complete each site.

Bathhouse: As has been our experience in all PA state parks, the bathhouse was pristine, and the shower (for no additional cost) was clean with plentiful hot water and was very much appreciated.

Activities/Amenities: Coin-operated laundry. A playground is in the campground and there is an additional one at the swimming beach. The swimming beach is open from mid-May to mid-September, from 8 am– sunset. Electric motorboats are permitted on Moshannon Lake. Boat rentals are available in season. Permits are required. 24 miles of hiking trails, including two trails directly from the campground to the lake. In the summer, there is a camper store/concession stand. Hunting is allowed in season. There are 4.3 miles of mountain biking trails.

I used to think Oregon State Parks were the best, but Pennsylvania State Parks have them beat by a mile. We have yet to be disappointed by the amenities(especially the clean bathrooms) offered at the half-dozen state parks we have visited so far.

    Cowans Gap State Park Campground

Great state park in southern PA.

We stayed in camping area A during mid April this year. It was a nice state park. Hiking, fishing, a lake, long creek. Clean bathrooms, heated bathhouse. Our site was #80 and had electric on it, water was just across the road. It was level, with a picnic table and fire ring. The ground was some pretty aggressive gravel, but it kept the ground pretty dry, and it had rained a fair amount in the days before we arrived. Very spotty cell service with T-Mobile. Some spots were more level than others, and others, some looked tricky for larger trailers. Weather was all over the place (as to be expected in this area in mid April. Had all four seasons in 5 days. Would revisit for sure. Totally forgot pictures of the site, but it was pretty typical for a state campground.

    Rocky Gap State Park Campground

    Always a great time!

This place is awesome! Our site (15) was a spacious pull through with great view of the mountain through the fall foliage! Our friends were in the site next to us (17) which was also nice and there was a wide walking path between them. Family also stayed in one of the rental cabins (21). Sites are spaced far apart in the section we were in with lots of foliage for privacy. There is walking path behind the loop along the lake that goes to the beach area and camp store. Easy access to the bath house with several paths off the loop. I recommend the pull through sites for their size and privacy but most sites looked great. The cabin was cute. It had a queen bed, bunk beds, side table and front porch with a couple windows. Picnic tables are large and fire pits were placed perfectly for our site.

    Seven Points (PA)

    Top 5 Campground in PA

This campground is located on the east side of Pennsylvania and offers a beautiful view of Lake Raystown. The campground has over 200 sites to choose from, and many of them are right on the water. There are also plenty of activities to keep you busy, including swimming, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing and my favorite thing to do Mt Biking. Raystown lake is also a really nice boating lake. The lake is a natural beauty with so many coves and inlets for the biggest of boats to enjoy. They do have a camping resort on the other side of the lake which makes it nice for anyone looking for rustic cabins or cabin rentals.

There are 50 miles of single track mountain biking at this campground. They are some of the best flow trails on the East coast and are the# 1 trail system in Pennsylvania. This is a family friendly campground and has so much to offer. There are volleyball nets, playgrounds, kayak and paddleboard rentals. The kids took a kayak over to an island and spent the afternoon cliff jumping with a 10 ft and 25 ft cliff to launch off of. The sites here are some of the nicest we have ever seen. They are all big and private with stunning views of Raystown Lake. There are steps down from your camper to a pad with a fire pit and area for a tent. You are literally 10 feet away from the water as you enjoy a sunset while sitting around the fire. The lake is a great place to kayak, paddleboard, or just relax and enjoy the view. We love coming here and spending our weekends on the lake. All tent sites are equipped with picnic tables and most sites are electric. looking for other epic reviews check out the top ten campgrounds in PA https://www.longdaycampingco.com/post/10-best-campsites-in-pennsylvania-gorgeous-sites-to-enjoy-the-outdoors

    Black Moshannon State Park Campground

    Beautiful and well appointed park

Getting to the park had some sharp turns and windy roads.  Small campground but nicely equipped.  2 bath houses were dated but clean.  Nice playground at the campground and also one at the beach.  Small camp concessions with a few camping items as well as ice cream cones.  Great hiking and a beautiful lake for kayaking.  Site 22 is a full hookup.  Utilities worked nicely.  However, our picnic table had seen better days.  The site sat down off the road but once you were backed in the spot it was pretty level.  This site also had a separate tent pad located down a few stone steps.  Verizon and AT&T cell service were basically non existent.  Every once in a while a text would come in or send but very spotty.  Sorry I failed to get a pic of the site in the daylight.  It was spacious and we had plenty of room for our 30' trailer, truck, and easy up over the table.  6+ chairs around the fire pit, cooking ring could have been better.  Grassy area for cornhole or playing.

    Quemahoning Family Recreation Area

    Enjoyable family campground

Quemahoning Family Recreation Area offers great fishing, some nice trails and generally wonderful weather during the summer season.  The campground offers some sites with electrical and others with varying primitive services.  The campground has a bathroom with showers (2 for men, 2 for women).  The result is there are sometimes lines waiting for a shower to be available.  There is a camp store where wood, ice and fishing supplies are available.  There is no trash service;  campers are expected to carry out their trash.  Campsites do have fire rings, a picnic table and parking available.  The campgrounds are pet friendly.  Boats are available to rent.  If you bring your own power needs to be electric only.

Guide to Saxton

Saxton, Pennsylvania sits at 825 feet elevation in the Allegheny Mountains, with campgrounds nestled between forested ridges and valleys. The region experiences distinct seasonal changes with summer temperatures averaging 80-85°F during peak camping months. Cell reception varies dramatically between higher elevation campgrounds and those in lower valleys near Raystown Lake.

What to do

Fishing access points: At Honey Bear Campground, anglers can explore multiple fishing spots without needing a license in designated areas. "I know my opinion is biased, but I keep coming back because it is so great," notes a seasonal worker who has returned for 11 seasons.

Mini golf courses: Family-friendly rv campgrounds near Saxton offer recreational amenities beyond water activities. Friendship Village Campground maintains a well-kept mini golf course adjacent to their arcade. A visitor mentioned, "Nice campground, clean and plenty of activities for the kids. The only thing we didn't like was all of the road noise."

Jumping pillow access: Multiple campgrounds feature bounce pillows for children. One camper at Friendship Village noted, "Went camping here for the first time this weekend. Although it was the off season there was still tons to do. The kids played mini golf, jumped on the pillow, played on multiple playgrounds, enjoyed ice cream and went fishing."

What campers like

Level sites: Many campers appreciate the careful site preparation at Timber Run Campground where 67 sites feature electrical hookups and gravel pads. The campground previously operated as Raystown Lake/Saxton KOA, where a visitor observed, "This was a nice campground! The staff were super friendly and the whole campground was tidy and clean. The only drawback was that the sites were tight and not the most level but we made do."

Bathroom facilities: Clean restrooms and showers rank highly in camper reviews. A visitor to Raystown Lake/Saxton KOA mentioned, "Staff was wonderful and just a great campground," with another specifically adding, "Bathrooms are Soo nice."

Waterfront access: Lake Raystown Resort provides direct lake access with a sandy swimming beach. "Both RV sites and lots to rent to pitch your own tent, fishing, huge lake with beach, lots of activities for the kids throughout the summer, one of the nicest parks we have camped at!" reports one camper.

What you should know

Site elevation challenges: The terrain around Saxton creates uneven campsites at some facilities. At Pioneer Lakes RV Park, a camper noted, "We ended up on a grassy hill in the back. The spot was so unlevel there were 19 inches between my bottom step and the ground."

Limited seasonal availability: Several campgrounds close between October and April. Honey Bear Campground operates from "April 15 to October 15," requiring advance planning for spring and fall camping trips.

Road noise concerns: Highway proximity affects sound levels at some campgrounds. One Friendship Village visitor reported, "This campground is located by 2 major highways and truck traffic and Jake brake are constant all night long. The road noise made it hard to hear when we were sitting around the fire."

Tips for camping with families

Dog accommodations: Many rv campgrounds in Saxton, Pennsylvania welcome pets with designated areas. Pioneer Lakes visitor mentioned, "Aside from all the above, the Dog Park is awesome. It's the size of a real, normal dog park."

Weekend activities: Family-oriented events occur regularly at Nature's Getaway RV Park. "Whether your stopping overnight on the way to somewhere or staying the weekend, this is a great place to park. We got the pull through at the end of one loop so we could face the woods," noted one visitor.

Pool access timing: Swimming pools typically open late morning rather than early. At Raystown Lake/Saxton KOA, a camper observed, "The pool hours or a little later than most campgrounds as they open at 11 through the week and 12 on Sunday."

Tips from RVers

Navigating mountain roads: Access to some Saxton area campgrounds requires careful driving on winding routes. When visiting Timber Run Campground, a camper advised, "If traveling from the Altoona area, go out through Martinsburg over Cove Mountain Rd - it saves you 30 minutes to an hour."

Site selection strategies: Careful site selection improves camping experience. At Raystown Lake/Saxton KOA, a visitor recommended, "For big rig campers, you need to stay at the upper portion of the campground at sites 200-500. In my opinion, the best sites to stay at if you have kids are sites 145–171 as those are right beside the jumping pillow, playground and gaga ball pit."

Service planning: Schedule RV service needs around local availability. Lake Raystown Resort has limited repair options, while Friendship Village has convenient access to maintenance. "If you have any issues with your camping rig, there is a full-service RV dealership basically at the entrance to the campground where you can buy virtually anything that you may require."
