    Laurel Hill State Park Campground

Nice state park with a lake

Stayed 3 nights because I wanted to be centrally located to the he Flight 93 Memorial and Falling Water (about 30 miles to each). The non pet section is heavily wooded and very shady. The pet section is more of a loop set up with some trees. The no pet section had no, zero, zilch cell service so my stay was super quiet. Site 173 was easy to back into and had a large picnic area with a fire ring next to the brook. There is a lake with a small beach and a boat launch and numerous hiking trails. The park will s very nice pretty and during the week fairly empty. I would recommend

    Clear Creek State Park Campground

    Great place to camp

We have tented and RV'd at Clear Creek. A must do when camping in Pennsylvania. The Clarian river is great for kayaking . Multiple trails off of park. Biking and breweries close by. if you have RV/travel trailer do NOT recommend the non-power sites, they are not level enough, you may really have to bring up the trailer. There were wonderful campsites hosts when we there

Pros; excellent location, great friendly people, clean and stocked bathrooms which include showers. Some sites are separated.. great camp hosts

Cons…a few sites are really close, however not a bad thing here as we got to meet a lot of great people, so for us it was kind of a Pro.

    Laurel Hill State Park Campground

    Quiet and peaceful

A solid place to camp. Nice temperatures for June. A nice little beach for the kids to swim at. Self service ice and wood. Bring exact cash as the the contact station is only open Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Bathrooms are old but cleaned daily, water was hot so no complaints. Later check out was a nice bonus

Some of the sites are quite small and right on top of others. Some like ours were significantly larger. The pet loop was essentially a field with trees around it. The none pet loop was in the trees and so you sometimes had more space and sometimes were right beside you.

The no pet loop essentially cleared out after the weekend and we had tons of space to run around.

I wish more hikes started from the campground. But there was a gravel trail that connected to most of them.

    Hickory Hollow Campground

    Wow!

This may be the first campground I give a 10 out of 10! All the amenities your could want, it's clean, sites are leveled, it's maintained beautifully, there are cows in the distance, fully stocked store, friendly staff. Laundry, bathrooms, fairly spacious sites, a pool, dog park. Very, very nice.

    Shawnee State Park Campground

    Huge state park

General: 300+ site campground with a mix of FHU, 30 and 50-amp electric, and non-electric tent sites, yurts, and cabins. Select loops allow pets but not all do.

Site Quality: Varies by type and location within the park. I heeded the advice of other reviewers warning that many sites were not level and did not reserve ahead of time. A Monday in mid-October had many open sites. Most of the non-electric sites were decidedly not level but many of the FHU and electric sites were fairly level, and we did not have a problem finding one. Some sites have gravel pads that were level and vary in length from 20’ to 115’ Most of the non-electric sites had no definable pads at all and as mentioned, were not level. Some roads in the campground were paved but a few were not.

Bath/Shower House: was clean. Did not use the shower.

Activities: A somewhat dated playground was located in the A Loop. A lake and beach are a short distance from the campground. We did see a boat launch and what appeared to be kayak rentals, but we were there out of season.

As remote as the campground feels, there was a surprising amount of road noise. This was just an overnight stay for us. We’ve been to many stellar Pennsylvania state park campgrounds, but this one was not as good as many others.

    Laurel Hill State Park Campground

Forested State Park in the Laurel Highlands

    August 2020 Stay

We camped for 1 night.  We chose site 102 because it looked decent in the picture and seemed a little apart and more private than other areas.  Unfortunately, it was not great for tent camping as there wasn't really a spot to set up our 4-person tent.  We squeezed it in by the fire pit, but if we had wanted to use the fire pit it would have been a fire hazard.  Elsewhere in the site it was rocky or uneven ground.

Looking around the rest of the campground, the loop up near the cabins was a typical RV area with sites lined up with little privacy in between.  I would look at the other loops for our next tent-camping visit.

We were hoping to do some hiking in the morning but got rained out.  However the trails looked nice and we hope to be back soon.

    Lake Raystown Resort

    Poorly Maintained

I was expecting a much nicer camping experience based on the reviews and price. We camped out on Poplar. Our site had a gravel pad. But the surrounding area was not level and you had to climb up a 2-3’ incline to get to the fire pit area. Gets very slick because it doesn’t dry out. Sites across the way were on the water. They had cement pads only as wide as your rv/tt but then the surrounding grass dropped off sharply. Very dangerous as you barely had enough room to walk around your unit.

We explored the “red carpet” row up on the hill. What a joke. Gravel pads skinnier in some instances then a TT is wide. One wrong step and you’d fall into the woods. Grass and weeds galore in the gravel areas. Sites barely large (long) enough and all back in’s up there. Trees had low branches which isn’t good for rigs. Not many people up in this area and I can see why.

The beach area really needed combing or raking once in a while. There was a water leak coming out of the road and a tree branch barely hanging on about to fall that staff just drove by like its normal.

When we checked in, there wasn’t much explained to us. This is a huge property and would have thought they’d want to give campers more direction about where things are etc. We went to the store to sign up for pump out service. ($10). I asked the girl a question because I hadn’t done that type of service prior and she doesn’t answer with information, just tells me to read the ticket. .....which didn’t have the answer. Felt like staff wasn’t overly friendly and didn’t want to take the time. So many good camp staff experiences to compare to from other campgrounds so this really stood out.

Water was nice. Rented a kayak. Spent some time on the beach. Boats zoomed back and forth but the noise wasn’t too bad. Jet skis could be a bit loud at times.

Also, almost forgot....we lost power twice. Once a meter overheated and melted. Took a few hours to get that replaced. The other time two workers walked along the tree line behind the campsites and hit the main to our area so they could fix an electrical issue up the row. No warning. No communication. Campers were to ones telling each other what was going on. Another example of staff just feeling very punching a clock.

Guide to Penn Run

The Pennsylvania Laurel Highlands region where Penn Run sits offers diverse glamping options at elevations between 1,200-2,900 feet. Winter temperatures often drop below freezing, while summer averages 75-85°F with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Most glamping sites in this area remain open from April through October, with limited winter accessibility due to seasonal road closures.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Clear Creek State Park, anglers can access both Clear Creek and the Clarion River. "Very clean and helpful camp. Too bad the fishing isn't the best at yellow creek national park," notes a visitor, suggesting that more productive fishing may be found at Clear Creek.

BMX track access: Prince Gallitzin State Park provides unexpected recreational variety. "Very nice state park in PA. Huge lake for water sports, scenic trails, small dirt bike oval track," reports one camper, highlighting options beyond standard lake activities.

Disc golf courses: Clear Creek State Park offers a complete disc golf course through wooded terrain. A visitor mentions, "Clear Creek State Park is an amazing little gem right outside of Cook Forest. Most of the campsites are right on the water, beautiful bridges, a great disc golf course, and moderate-to-light hiking trails."

Amish cultural experiences: Silver Canoe Campground provides proximity to Amish communities. As one reviewer notes, "Short drive to Smicksburg to shop. You may hear the horse drawn buggies of the Amish who keep their boats here." This offers a cultural dimension to your outdoor experience.

What campers like

Secluded waterfront sites: Laurel Hill State Park offers private camping spots near water. A guest observed, "All sites are wooded but some have more separation than others. Our site backed up to the creek but surprisingly, there was not a lot of water flowing in the spring."

Wildlife encounters: Clear Creek State Park provides opportunities for wildlife viewing. One camper mentioned, "I did have two separate run in with bears but over all a great experience!" Be sure to follow proper food storage protocols when camping here.

Private island camping: At Yellow Creek Campground, unique island sites are available. A camper reported, "The private island is a beautiful campsite and has enough room for several tents. There's plenty of trees on the island so there are plenty of sticks to find for fires."

Community atmosphere: Fox Den Acres Campground fosters social connections. "They provide activities almost every evening, making sure everything age range is catered to throughout the week," notes one visitor, highlighting the organized entertainment schedule.

What you should know

Leveling challenges: Many sites require equipment for leveling. At Clear Creek State Park, "Most of the spots will require leveling blocks," according to one camper. Pack appropriate gear to ensure a comfortable setup.

Site selection importance: Carefully review site details before booking. At Shawnee State Park, "there are a fair amount of awkwardly-placed sites that sit on a hill and are difficult to place a tent, equipment or gear," warns one visitor.

Fluctuating pricing: Some campgrounds have inconsistent fee structures. One camper at Yellow Creek observed, "Clean bathrooms and hot showers but if you like to pay a different price each time you get there, then have fun. I had 3 different prices when I went there last."

Seasonal limitations: Many facilities operate only during warmer months. At Keystone State Park, "a Monday in mid-October had many open sites," indicating lower occupancy in shoulder seasons when services may be limited.

Tips for camping with families

Pool options: Mirror Lake RV Camping & Fishing offers swimming alternatives. "The campgrounds are very nice they have a pool as well as a community building and camp store. We had 8 kids and 8 adults who all had a blast playing on the playground, floating down the creek, swimming in the pool, riding bicycles," a family reported.

Creek exploration: Shallow waterways provide safe play areas. At Fox Den Acres, "We did watch kids fishing and pulling fish out as soon as they put their line in!! So much fun for them," notes one observer.

Educational programming: Ranger-led activities enhance family experiences. At Clear Creek State Park, "This is also a great place to go year-round for kids interested in learning about nature. There is a nature museum. Seek out Ranger Susanne—she is a really great teacher!"

Playground accessibility: Multiple campgrounds feature play equipment. A visitor to Fox Den Acres mentioned, "This is a large campground with play grounds, well maintained pool and grounds, fishing, party pavilions, and store."

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: At Keystone State Park, site conditions vary significantly. A camper observed, "I heeded the advice of other reviewers warning that many sites were not level and did not reserve ahead of time...Most of the non-electric sites were decidedly not level but many of the FHU and electric sites were fairly level."

Pull-through availability: Fox Den Acres provides convenient access sites. "The sites in the lower field, where I was, were roomy and level and all pull-throughs," notes an RV camper, describing the layout.

Site dimensions: Check specific measurements before booking. At Shawnee State Park, "sites have gravel pads that were level and vary in length from 20' to 115'," according to one reviewer, highlighting the importance of knowing your RV size requirements.

Power hookup placement: Consider electrical connection locations when setting up. A camper at Laurel Hill State Park noted, "The electrical hookups are not played out well like an expensive RV park with the shared power post on the entrance side of the camper. You may want to have an extension for your power cable."
