    Oregon Dunes KOA

Luxury Camping with ATV/UTV Dune Access

This is the cleanest, most well-maintained KOA I have ever Camped in. It’s family and pet friendly with a well-maintained playground area for the kids and an enclosed dog park for the pets. If that’s not enough consider this: it has a dedicated ATV riding area for the Littles - no big kids/no big ATVs - and is a perfect spot to teach young kids how to ride. This campground has full hook ups and Wi-Fi that actually works! The camp Staff & employees are extremely friendly and helpful. It boosts a small general store on site as well as being located right next-door to an ATV rental shop. The ATV rental shop also has parts, accessories and fuel! Did I mention that it has great access to all the wonderful dunes? If you are an ATV/UTV enthusiast this KOA is for you.

    Sunset Bay State Park Campground

    Classy State Park

There is a golf course right next door. Well-curated campground. Tent camping available here, but we stayed in a yurt. Yurts do not have much greenery for privacy, but you have walls, so I suppose that makes up for it.

Inside the yurt is a heater, a small table, a bunk bed, and a futon. Fire pit around the side. Hot showers and potable water everywhere. Camp hosts and staff were pleasant.

Short walk to a gorgeous beach and miles of hiking trails! Caution: dogs not allowed in some nearby parks.

    Sunset Bay State Park Campground

    A childhood favorite

I have been frequently this campground for 20 years and although a lot has changed in that time this campground seems to stay wonderful. Campsites are nicely maintained and practically on the beach with nearby hiking trails and pet friendly beaches. Campsites are pet friendly and nice sized with fire pits and picnic benches. Bathrooms and showers located nearby and the entire campground is very peaceful.

Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State Park Campground

Great Family Camping, lots of activities

This campground is always a safe bet any time of the year. Pets, children and groups are very welcome at this campground with nearby lakes, sand and ocean access. Rent kayaks and canoes at the lake. Visit the rustic and historic log cabin store with a southern exposure and bask in the afternoon sun. Kids can swim in a shallow roped off area out in front of the store with ample outdoor seating. Located near the ocean, this campground is protected from the heavy winds often experienced in other coastal campgrounds. Honeyman has access and a wonderful walking trail to Cleawox lake, where the dunes literally slope right into the lake. Sandboarding is popular on the hillside of the dunes adjacent to the lake. Fishing, non-motorized boating and protection from winds are the plusses at this nearby lake to the campground. Back at the campground, there are many loops for different kids of campers. Those with ATV's, Yurt camping, RV camping and tent camping. The hiker/biker campground is very quiet and private.

The quaint town of Florence is just a few miles north with historic downtown shopping located on riverfront. Locally owned coffee shop, Siuslaw Coffee Roasters offers comfy fireside seating with a view of the river and the historic and recently restored Siuslaw Bridge, designed and engineered by the famous Conde M. McCullough. Downtown Florence offers many specialty gift shops, eateries and fine dining as well as family pizza and locally owned BJ's Ice Cream Parlor with a huge variety of salt water taffy.

Across Highway 101 from Honeyman is Wohink Lake, where motorized boats are often seen pulling water-skiers. A great place to spend the day if you have a large group or have your own motor boat. Lots of sun, swimming areas and parking make this a convenient place to spend a day.

I have found this campground to be completely reserved 6 months in advance. They always seem to have sites available if you arrive early enough. I've never been turned away if I've arrived early.

Loon Lake Lodge and RV Resort

3.5/5 - not bad for a quick getaway

The website was not kidding about not following the directions through Google Maps. The last 9 miles to the resort was really trying - the roads were narrow, twisty and winding. If you are probe to car-sickness, go slow. I took extra precaution and dabbed essential oils on myself and my children.

Our pull-through site was in the Upper Marina, #22. If you have an extra canopy for camping, I'd suggest you bring it. It got really HOT when we were there. The good news is once the sun sets behind the trees, around 6pm, it makes eating dinner at the picnic table so comfortable and cooling.

My husband and children perused the bathroom/shower facilities which was just across from our campsite. He said it was spacious - a shower + private bathroom + sink setup and wide enough for a family.

Access to the swimming beach/boat launch is just a short 3 minutes walk. You just have to exercise caution because you will be crossing a main road (cars and big logging trucks rumble along often enough during the week).

The swimming (sandy) beach is cosy (read: tiny). There are no lifeguards on duty but enough trees offering shade for parents/families to sit back and keep watch.

You would have to drive back 5 minutes down the road to visit the Lodge for supplies or ice. The Lodge also provides some light refreshments* (deli sandwiches and ice-cream).

Our site offered full hook-ups including cable (limited channels). WIFI* was a disappointment though - we had to create an account for a complimentary hour of WIFI usage every day. Together with the zero cell reception, it renders us completely off the grid. It's great really to totally relax your mind and body but it is worrisome for that what-if's scenarios.

*Ice-cream was very pricey for the single not-generous scoop in a plastic cup that we bought for each of us. Because of the steep prices and WIFI availability (you have to pay if you want to get connected), I could only give a rating of 3.5/5 stars.

Otherwise, we had a great time at the RV resort. The sites are appealing for huge family reunion (we witnessed such a reunion during our trip). We will be back! 😊

We are a family of 4 (2 young boys with no pets). We traveled with a travel trailer.

    Umpqua Lighthouse State Park Campground

    Dog Friendly Deluxe Yurt

For a small campground the deluxe yurts were huge. Much larger than the rustic yurts available in other Oregon State parks, the deluxe yurt had acres of space. The kitchen had an almost full sized fridge, a microwave, and a sink. The shower in the bathroom was not as nice as in the deluxe cabins elsewhere, but there was plenty of towel bars to dry all of your gear on. The small heater had a hard time heating all of the space. The large skylight had lovely star viewing when the clouds cleared. Since it was the middle of the week in February there was no noise from the surrounding ATV area, indeed, no ATVs around at all. The trail around tiny Lake Marie was well drained and not soggy, with several connections to the campground. Our yurt had views of the other yurts, try 19 for a view of the lake yet still dog friendly. The front porch did not offer any shelter from the rain.

    Bay Point Landing

    Amenity Rich

This resort has clean bathrooms with showers, laundry, a heated indoor pool, and other well maintained amenities. The sites are a good size with full hook ups, picnic tables, fire pits, and green space. I was also pleasantly surprised that the Wi-Fi in our site was a decent speed.

This place will probably be so charming once the landscaping and trees have a chance to grow up a little bit. In its current state, it does feel a bit barren and the modern, trendy buildings feel a little sterile.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Sawyers Rapids RV Resort, guests have access to "excellent fishing spots" in a "quite area" according to Rodolfo M. The resort's location on Highway 38 provides direct access to the Umpqua River for fishing throughout the year.

Disc golf courses: Whistlers Bend County Park offers a championship disc golf course rated "number 2 in nation" according to Tim W. The course features "sprawling and varried" terrain with "spectacular long shots, and tight trees" as described by Brant T.

Dune activities: South Jetty RV and Camping Resort provides access to Oregon Dunes Recreation Area just a mile away. Visitor Carson C. notes, "Really close access to the sand dunes and we rented sand boards for $10 a day and had a blast sand boarding."

Lighthouse visits: Take a day trip to Umpqua Lighthouse State Park, where Blaine B. suggests "hiking and fishing at lake 50 yards away, near the light house." Another visitor shared they "took a trip to Heceta Lighthouse for the day, geocached and hiked around the lighthouse."

What campers like

Riverside locations: Whistlers Bend County Park receives praise for waterfront access, with Bobbie G. noting, "Beautiful campground on the river, if the spots at the end are available snag them! So easy to add a few more extra tents since there is a huge grassy area between you & the river."

Clean facilities: Multiple campgrounds maintain well-kept bathroom facilities. At Hi-Way Haven RV Park, visitors appreciate the "great hot showers" with Katie E. adding that "the park was also very dog friendly and has a couple fenced in areas for off leash puppy time."

Quiet surroundings: Several cabins and campgrounds offer peaceful settings. Ioan P. described Sawyers Rapids as "very small, only few spots. And some primitive cabins. Family business. They work hard to maintain it," highlighting the intimate, quiet nature of smaller properties.

Privacy between sites: Some properties feature natural barriers between campsites. Jeff C. at South Jetty noted, "Our site was very private with trees and bushes between our site and neighbors on each side," providing a more secluded cabin experience despite being in a larger resort.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Summer cabin rentals book quickly. Robena M. at William M. Tugman State Park advises, "we made our reservations way in advance. I would highly recommend that if you know you're going to book as soon as possible, 6 months out if possible. We got the last yurt available."

Road conditions: Some cabin locations involve challenging access roads. One visitor to Loon Lake Lodge noted, "The website was not kidding about not following the directions through Google Maps. The last 9 miles to the resort was really trying - the roads were narrow, twisty and winding."
