Baker Bay Campgrounds & Marina - a Lane County Park

Nice family centric campground on Dorena Lake

The Baker Bay Campground and Marina is a county park outside of Cottage Grove, Oregon. It has a boat launch and boat rentals. There are several huge inflatable water structures in the bay which kids can play on for a fee. The concession stand is currently under construction however there is plenty of green space for picnics. There is a large play structure, horseshoes, and a sand volleyball pit.

Great site for families with kids.

Decent main restroom and showers however, the vault toilet near the main camping spots was the WORST I have ever been near. I can't imagine how people near the toilet could stand being there - especially in the heat of the summer.

    COE Dorena Reservoir Schwarz Campground

Quiet campground, but watch for Algae

One option when looking for a campground last minute during the summer close to Eugene, Oregon. This one is not usually very busy during peak season in my opinion.

This is a primitive campground so no hook ups for your rv. Bring the generator if your needing a power source during the day.

There are restrooms/ showers on site along with drinking water, a playground, and an rv dump station. Picnic tables and fire pits at each site. Trails are nearby along with a beach/ swimming area at Dorena Lake. Watch for signs of Algae or Swimmers Itch as it has been present the past few years at Dorena Lake.

Overall its a great last minute campground not far from town ( Cottage Grove- Eugene), but doesn't make my list of top 5 if I can make reservations a head of time.

    Royal Heart Hill

Wonderful quiet spot in the woods

We loved the tent/trailer camp spot on Carly’s property. It was quiet and peaceful and we were able to disconnect and relax for a couple of days. There’s a nice hiking trail down to a pond with cute signage to lead the way.

The composting toilet had a stack of dried firewood from the property beside it and also some cute tables and chairs by the fire ring made from local trees.

All in all a wonderful place just outside of Cottage Grove. We will definitely be back next year!

    COE Dorena Reservoir Schwarz Campground

    Tree covered

Close to Cottage Grove, COE spot accepted the Passport for half priced camping.

The campground roads can be tight if you have a big rig so be careful. Because there is no power in the sites people were running generators for hours, even the tent campers.

Large groups were utilizing the group areas when we stayed, lots of children having fun.

It would not be a destination place but okay for an overnight stay.

Alchol ban in the park but based on the trash bins it was not enforced.

    COE Dorena Reservoir Schwarz Campground

    Paddling on the Row

Schwarz campground is located just past Cottage grove, right on the Row river. I hadn't realized, until I took a nice little walk, it's located just below Dorena reservoir. It has about 60 sites and a few larger open group sites. The inner sites don't offer much for privacy or shade, but found that the outer had a little more privacy and tons of shade from the oak and pine trees. There are many sites with riverfront views and a couple have private access; with public access at the end of the row. The water is slow and shallow, but still very cold. Great place for families and kids, just be on the lookout for poison oak. There are clean showers and restrooms although they are kind of outdated and could have used another, as it gets busy at peak hours. There are also drinking water bibs, recycling and jr. ranger programs, I didn't seem to see wood sales.

    PROS

    • Short easy 1 mi. trail(good for kids)
    • River adjacent
    • Family friendly

    CONS

    • Outdated facilities(too few)
    • Poison oak at sites

    Mineral Forest Camp

    Remote mining camp near Bohemia

This is a very small remote campground past Dorena lake near Bohemia mountain. There are only 3 spots at this free of charge campground. If you can luck out, or go in the off season, this is a nice far out spot, off the beaten path to just relax by the 'Sharp's creek'. It is watched over by the local mining authority as it is located nearby many open mining claims. That being said, there are no camp hosts or water bibs, but there is a pit toilet, as well as fire rings and picnic tables in the sites . There are no stores or gas stations past Cottage Grove, so get your supplies before leaving town.

I liked how this place is small and more primitive than others, while still being a legit campground.

There are a few nearby hikes including the spectacular Trestle creek falls and Bohemia mountain, but you have to double back and up Bryce creek rd to find them, unless you have 4wd.

    Vincent Creek

    OK spot along Smith River

The campground is right on the river. Good spot if you're in a pinch without reservations while passing through the area. Small day-use area and a handful of first-come, first-served camping sites.

Pit toilets only. No potable water here. Smith River is clean enough, so we filtered water from there.

I've stayed here twice on bike tours between Cottage Grove, OR and Reedsport, OR. It's a decent stop for touring cyclists who have minimal needs. We've never been bothered for camping here without registering.

Armitage Park & Campground - a Lane County Park

Pretty area, very near to Eugene and Coburg

Small, convenient campground near Eugene. Large dog park adjacent, which is very convenient when traveling with your four legged friends.

Guide to Cottage Grove

Camping sites around Cottage Grove range from primitive forest spots to developed campgrounds with amenities. The area sits within the Willamette National Forest at elevations between 700-1,000 feet, creating mild summer temperatures with highs averaging 85°F. Morning fog commonly settles in riverfront campgrounds before burning off by mid-morning.

What to do

Creek exploration: Sharps Creek offers swimming spots with natural features. "What you go here for is the swimming and the gold panning. There is Gold Panning done at a lot of creeks all around this campground. The swimming spot is across the street and it is semi hard to get down but once you are down, there are two beautiful areas, one has a 10 ft jumping rock."

Hiking trails: Multiple trails connect campgrounds to waterfalls within a short distance. At Cedar Creek Campground, "miles of hiking trail at the start of the campsite. The park is divided into a day use site/trail head access and the other side is camping... cool waterfall a few minutes walk up the trail."

River activities: The Middle Fork Willamette River provides fishing and kayaking opportunities. "Accessible lake, good fishing and skiing. Lots of good forest to walk in," notes one visitor about Black Canyon Campground.

What campers like

Riverside sites: Many campers value direct water access from their site. At Pine Meadows Campground, "Our camping spot had a direct path to the water... There is a small play structure for kids and tons of bats to watch at night."

Morning atmosphere: Early hours offer the best views and experiences. "The sun rose across the lake which was extremely beautiful," shares one Baker Bay camper.

Natural swimming holes: Clean, clear water attracts summer visitors. "The campsites are pretty spacious which is really nice! Overall a nice place to camp with views if you don't mind not getting into the water," mentions a review of Pine Meadows, referring to occasional algae notices.

What you should know

Train noise: Some campgrounds experience nighttime train disturbance. At Black Canyon Campground, "The train tracks are literally across the river. Maybe 200 ft away. The train runs all day and sadly all night. If you fall asleep easily to the sound of a train horn and train cars along a track then you'll love it here."

Reservation systems: Many campgrounds mix reservable and first-come sites. "We originally booked a reserved site at the campground. These slots are all in the center of the campground. The spot was nice but located about 200 ft from riverfront first come first serve sites so we packed up and moved there."

Water quality alerts: Check for seasonal notices. "Watch for signs of Algae or Swimmers Itch as it has been present the past few years at Dorena Lake."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several dog friendly campgrounds near Cottage Grove include play areas for kids. "The playground is nice and right next to the beach. However before getting in the water, look for signs for swimmers itch or blue/green algae."

Swimming safety: Water access points vary in difficulty. At Rujada Campground, there's "access to a nice swimming hole next to the campground. Be advised getting to it was not easy especially with small kiddos."

Off-peak timing: For quieter family experiences, avoid holidays. "It was packed and every site was taken. We were able to book because someone just happened to cancel their trip."

Tips from RVers

Site selection matters: At Armitage Park & Campground, "The campsites were nicely situated so you weren't right on top of each other and the park was great. There is an off leash dog park and access to the river."

Generator rules: Different pet-friendly campgrounds have varying noise policies. "It's dry camping so all the RV's had generators and not the quiet Hondas. All promptly started at 6am."

Off-grid preparation: Many sites lack hookups. "No water or electricity. (This is actually a pro in my opinion)... We loved our stay here and will be back again for sure."
