Best RV Parks & Resorts near West Portsmouth, OH

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Shawnee State Park Campground in West Portsmouth provides RV sites with electric hookups, water access, and sanitary dump facilities. The park accommodates both small and medium-sized motorhomes, though some sites have limitations for larger rigs. "Sites are decently sized, but they are closely positioned with minimal separation, which might limit privacy," noted one visitor about the campground's layout. Lazy Village Campground & RV Park offers full-service sites with 50-amp electrical hookups, sewer connections, and water hookups on level pads suitable for big rigs. Several pull-through RV pads are available at both locations, though availability varies seasonally. The Ohio River Campground at Shawnee State Park features spacious, asphalted pads with fire pits and picnic tables at each site.

Many campgrounds in the region require advance reservations, particularly during summer and fall weekends. Cell service varies significantly between parks, with Shawnee State Park having virtually no reception in the campground area but limited signal at the lodge. Dump stations can become congested during peak checkout times on Sundays, with waiting times reported at some facilities. Most RV parks in the area remain open year-round, though amenities may be limited during winter months. A camper wrote, "We had to wait a while at the single dump station," highlighting a common infrastructure limitation. Pet-friendly policies are standard across most parks, with designated walking areas available at several locations. Propane fill services are limited, with Carter Caves State Resort Park being one of the few offering on-site propane.

    Greenbo Lake State Resort Park

    It’s pretty nice

A lot of their sites have full hook up but not all of them. Read the details of the sites when booking. Some of the sites have really steep grades and aren’t big rig friendly.

Check in was a breeze had out car tags on our post.

They do have a full-time camp host on site.

I didn’t use the shower 🚿 house but they do have a couple on the grounds.

They have a putt putt course but bring your own putter and ball.

There is Verizon service but it’s spotty.

They do have WiFi but it’s very slow and not secure.

Place is very pet friendly. The people we have met here are great.

Sites are wide but really close together.

One-Night Adventure: Our Shakedown Trip in the New Travel Trailer

Campsite Review for Site 6 – Gateway to Wayne National Forest

Our recent camping trip at this campground was an excellent way to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of Wayne National Forest. The serene forest setting provided a perfect backdrop for a relaxing outdoor adventure, with the campground offering all the basics needed for a comfortable stay.

We stayed at Site 6 in our travel trailer, enjoying the ease of a pull-through site. Although the water and electric hookups are on the opposite side unless you drive through the loop the wrong way, this setup has an unexpected benefit—it faces directly toward the woods. This orientation allowed us to savor the tranquility of the forest, adding a layer of privacy and a more intimate connection with nature.

While the sites are decently sized, they are closely positioned with minimal separation, which might limit privacy in other areas. However, the majestic surroundings of Wayne National Forest more than make up for this. The proximity to hiking trails, wildlife sightings, and the peaceful ambiance of the trees create an immersive experience that’s hard to beat.

All in all, this campground is a fantastic base for exploring Wayne National Forest. The combination of basic amenities, convenient access, and the enchanting forest environment makes it a great spot for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

    Sun Valley Campground

Beautiful campground with sites for RVs and tents.

This campground has a lot to offer with electric and water hookups for RVs with back-in and pull through sites. They have a dump station as well as an onsite bathroom/shower house. The owners are very friendly. I highly recommend.

Lake View Campground — Beech Fork State Park

    Beautiful and secluded

We visited in the end of October 2021. The colors and the views were spectacular. The drive into the park was very curvy mountain back roads. The site included a fire pit with grill and a picnic table. There was a fair amount of space between sites. Approximately 50-75 feet apart. The bath house was nice but could use a little refreshening. There are many activities including a shooting range, frisbee golf course, swimming pool, playground just to name a few. With Verizon as our service provider no cell signal was available at the park. Overall, we give 3 stars. Minus one star for no cell service and minus another star due to maintenance. Overall, very nice park.

    Sandy Springs Campground

Ohio River Campground - Hidden Gem

This is a peaceful and quiet campground located along the Ohio River. All sites have 50 amp and water hook ups. Most have fire rings and picnic tables. It is amazing to watch the river barges go by and they also have fishing available. Shower house is clean and warm!!

    Sandy Springs Campground

Amazing experience at Sandy Springs Campground

Sandy Springs Campground is this awesome little gem on the Ohio River. It is a small family owned and family oriented Campground with some amazing views of the foothills of Ohio and Kentucky. The Campground is super clean and well maintained. They have full hookups and 30/50 Amp service. There are pull through sites and river front sites. They have several rental options and the coolest house boat over looking the river with a wrap around porch. They have really nice shower and laundry facilities. There is a pretty cool camp store there too. The best part is the friendly people and atmosphere. The owners work very hard here. They take very good care of the guests and there are always plenty of activities on the weekends and holidays. The prices are definitely affordable and can't be beat anywhere I have stayed before. Couldn't recommend a better place to stay on your next camping adventure.

    Grayson Lake State Park Campground

    Below average

This is a small campground situated next to a golf course. There are several nice sites but others are not ideal. Our site (13) was ok, other than the scattered broken glass and trash. The main issue was lack of oversight from staff. The site next to us was completely packed with their fifth wheel, a large tent, pop up canopy, four vehicles, a kayak trailer, and a boat that was in the corner of our site. They did not leash their dogs and did not pick up after them. We didn’t complain about them encroaching on our site but felt that the campground should enforce their own rules. Another site nearby setup a construction light at night that lit up the entire campground like a stadium and stayed on late into the night. Basically, campers are left to do as they please regardless of whether it is inconsiderate of other campers. The positive is the location is only a few minutes from the boat ramp for the most popular kayaking spot.

Four Coves Campground — Beech Fork State Park

    Lots of good sites

Not far from home, and good choices of type of sites. Biggest negative is no wifi or cell service. But quiet, family friendly, and some sites away from activities to chill out at too.

    Grayson Lake State Park Campground

Enjoyable State Park with a Golf Course

This state park was easy to find and we followed our RV GPS and the multiple signage to the golf course and campground(CG) area. Check in was a breeze at the gate and we headed in to find back-in site 30 with electric(50/30 AMP) and water. We were in a small cul de sac that we had to go through a tight spot with trees to get to, but had no issues getting our 39’ 5th wheel through. Once in the cul de sac, it was wide open and we easily backed into the 48’ asphalt pad(per reservation info on site lengths that seemed accurate). As we have a F450, we had to disconnect to get out of the road but the CG had no issues with you parking on the grass. We noticed that multiple campers didn’t even park on the asphalt site pad and instead moved their rigs onto the grass using the pad like a driveway. There are no FHUs. The electric was placed towards the center of the pad and worked well. The water spigots for 30 and 31 were located together and were on our door side so I needed to run about 35’ of hose going under the rig to connect. Water pressure was pretty good at around 42 psi. We got 4 bars on Verizon and a handful of OTA channels, but no major networks. We had a clear shot to the southern sky, as did the other cul de sac sites, for satellite but did not use our dish. The main CG has more tree cover so satellite service could be iffy depending on your site selection. Not all sites in this park are level with some having steep slopes. As far as bigger rigs, being able to back past the asphalt pad is a plus. The longest site in the park seemed to be pull through 50, which was also spacious but with some slope. Our site was spacious out the back and utilities side with 31 being nearby. During the weekend we got foot traffic directly through our site versus using the cut grass path on the back of our site that leads to the water. Sadly it was a mix of kids and grownups. There was about 1/2 mix of RV and tent campers. The partiers were up near the bathhouse and playground but were respectful of quiet hours. We did enjoy walking our dogs around the CG and trails. On one hike, we went down the cut grass swath behind us to the trail along the water and went right. This steep little winding trail brought us right back up to our area of the CG about 150 yards away. That trail is not one of the park’s formal trails but at the end linked to the Heritage trail where it ends near our loop. So we went up by the gate where the formal trails, Lick Falls and Heritage start as they are better trails. The dump station sits where the road coming into and out of the CG intersect, so when we got in line to dump around 11:00 AM vehicles were trying to get around the dumpers. If you plan to depart or leave or come back into the CG on Sunday, plan accordingly. We really enjoyed our 3 day stay and plan to come back during the week to kayak and again play the golf course.

Guide to West Portsmouth

Campers traveling to West Portsmouth, Ohio find themselves in an area where the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains meet the Ohio River valley. The region's terrain ranges from 500-800 feet in elevation with humid summers and moderately cold winters. Late spring through early fall brings temperatures between 60-85°F, creating optimal conditions for outdoor recreation at area campgrounds.

What to do

Fishing and water recreation: At Little Bear Island Campground, campers can spend entire days on the water. "We fished all day and night. Caught a bunch of fish and had a catfish fry. The mountain views are awesome and for once it wasn't another RV parking lot," reports Danny J.

Cave exploration: The region offers unique underground adventures within a short drive. At Carter Caves State Resort Park Campground, visitors can take ranger-guided tours through limestone caverns. A camper notes, "The park has a lot to do, not just the caves. There's tons of waterfalls off the trails, and other things to see."

Disc golf and outdoor activities: Several parks in the area maintain recreational facilities beyond camping. "Just a beautiful park. Clean well maintained. Lots of amenities. Paddle boats, marina, 18 hole disc golf, bike park, huge dog park, store, archery range, playground and trails," writes John R. about local recreation options.

Hiking trails: The area features numerous hiking paths through varied terrain. "The new campground is on the river on what used to be the golf course," mentions one visitor about recent developments in trail access near camping areas.

What campers like

Secluded tent sites: Many campers appreciate the availability of more private spots. "This campground has some features that are nicer than what is found in many state campgrounds. There are some secluded sites back in the woods, so you don't feel like you are camping in a parking lot in a few places," explains Megan M. about Shawnee State Park Campground.

Family-friendly activities: Long's Retreat Family Resort receives praise for its recreational options. "We have been going here for the last 6 summers with a big group. Everyone always has such a great time and it is the highlight of all the kids summers. The kids can either swim up at the lake (with multiple water slides and a huge floating dock with diving board), the little kids can have fun in the splash pad right at the beach," shares Kristi J.

Full-service RV accommodations: "The campground is very well maintained. It's quite and tucked away. Nature trails, ponds for relaxing and watching the wildlife or fishing," writes Angelia C. about Sheltowee RV Park & Cabins, highlighting amenities appealing to RV campers near West Portsmouth.

Clean facilities: Many reviewers note the upkeep of campground bathrooms and common areas. "The shower houses were clean and the small camp store convenient. All the Shawnee State Park staff I met were super friendly and helpful," reports Jay T.

What you should know

Cell service limitations: Mobile connectivity varies significantly between locations. "I enjoyed every second I spent at this camp ground... very friendly staff.. great cabins.. awesome environment!! Best part is there is no phone service.....everyone has to actually spend time together and it's a great reset!" notes Emma C.

Site selection considerations: When planning RV camping near West Portsmouth, Ohio, careful research of specific sites can improve your stay. "We stayed on campsite 057, which is in full sun as it has no shade but does have full hookups. The site was very well kept and clean but could use some privacy from the roadway. Be sure to look at google maps satellite before arriving as most of the sites that are labeled electric share one electric box for 2 campsites and can be pretty far from your pad," advises Amanda S.

Seasonal options: While some parks remain open year-round, others have limited operations. Carter Caves State Resort Park Campground operates from April 1 to October 31, and Long's Retreat Family Resort runs April 1 through October 31.

Reservation needs: Popular campgrounds fill quickly, especially for weekend stays during summer months. Many facilities allow advance booking through online systems.

Tips for camping with families

Entertainment options for children: "Swimming, water slides, canoeing, go-cart racing, mini golf, and a full arcade give plenty of variety. Of course, relaxing by the campfire, grilling hot dogs and making s'mores is really what makes the time with the kids special," shares Rocky B. about activities at Long's Retreat Family Resort.

Special events: Some campgrounds host themed weekends. "We went to the campground during the Halloween festivities in October 2017. There are a lot of activities to do while at the state park, caving, hiking, kayaking, mini golf, golf, etc," explains Karen P.

Tent sites away from RVs: Families with tents can find dedicated spaces in some parks. "Unlike many Ohio State parks I've visited, the Shawnee campground has a variety of great tent sites. Several of these are hidden in the trees at the top of some steps and up a short path. We stayed in 12. If you don't mind hauling your gear a short distance from your car, sites like this are perfect as they're for tent campers only," advises Jay T.

Kid-friendly amenities: Some campgrounds offer specialized facilities. "The campground had fun amenities for kids, like a very small mini golf course and an outdoor screen for movie nights," notes one reviewer about recreational options designed for younger campers.

Tips from RVers

Hookup location challenges: When RV camping near West Portsmouth, Ohio, prepare for utility connection distances. "The only issue was that some of the sites were around 50 ft from the electric hook up. Thankfully we were able to switch spots instead of renting an extension cord," mentions autumn L.

Level site considerations: Lazy Village Campground & RV Park receives positive feedback for site conditions. "We stayed on the creek witch has water and electric but they will empty your tanks for you if you stay longer than 3 nights," explains Rebecca F.

Big rig accommodations: Some parks specifically accommodate larger vehicles. "This is one of the more unique campgrounds we have stayed. The sites did hold a bit of water after a strong rain, be prepared if bad weather is expected," advises Jason G. about site conditions at Robert Newlon Airpark RV Park.

Satellite service setup: Signal access can require site changes. "They were flexible. The first site we had we were unable to set up our StarLink so we scoped out another site where there were no trees and then asked to switch and they were accommodating," shares Shirley M.
