    Tar Hollow State Park Campground

    Memorial Weekend 2020

After being cooped up, we (3 young adults) decided to get out and decided on this campground that was new to all of us. The campground was very low key and made for an easy going weekend! We weren’t too keen on most of the parks amenities, but enjoyed just sitting around the fire the whole time. Pros: -staff was cleaning common areas (bathroom and showers) either once or twice a day -campsite 12 was incredible space and had an added bonus of a deck structure over the creek

Other notes: -WiFi available, but only right by the main office/general store -no service for AT&T or Verizon -Fire tower not accessible -Lake tested high for a bacteria and swimming is not recommended

Corona Virus Notes: -only Ice and Firewood available for purchase at General Store -putt putt, boat and bike rentals, and game box rentals not available -nearby Hocking Hills trails were closed

    Well Maintained Sites

Paved, well maintained sites but a bit close together. Don’t expect privacy if it’s booked. Reservations close 4 days prior, after that it’s first come, first serve. However, surprisingly very quiet during my visit. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring with grill, and water & electric hookups. Cannot comment on the showers because no running water at the time of my visit (water line break, scheduled for repairs).

    Nice Campground Close to Interstate

    KOA Review

The campground it’s self is very clean and taken care of. We were there in early March with winter temps. The staff was extremely nice and helpful, bath house and laundry was clean. The water at our site was inoperable and they offered to move us without me even having to ask which was nice. The site could be maintained better ours had lots of tire ruts and fire pit could have been better for the price. Overall it’s a good campground with amenities in great shape. A good little dog park that was extremely clean, putt putt, and more. I would come back again in the off season just cause we like camping with less crowds.

Carter Caves State Resort Park Campground

5 generations of my family have loved this place

my family have been coming here for 5 generations. it’s definitely a family favorite. Yes it can get crowded, yes there are kids and lots of noise. they’re coming here to have fun too! I grew up in the primitive campground with a huge canvas tent. We’ve graduated to an RV and are on the other side of the campgrounds now but still loving it. I’ve never stayed on the side with the horse camping but we usually run down there for the showers. Canoe the Tygart, take a trail ride, spelunk a Cave, eat a S’more, hike the red trail, see the natural bridge, come for pioneer week, Halloween is a hoot, watch out for skunks, hope you see a wildcat or two, tell a ghost story, play some corn hole, watch out for bears. Anyway go to the caves, you’ll love it.

    Rocky Fork State Park Campground

    Meh

We chose this campground for its proximity to Serpent Mound. It's very middle of the road. The camp store is better than average, but the grounds themselves leave a lot to be desired. Very little privacy, small, uneven sites, bathhouses out of an 80s slasher movie. So much goose poop. The firewood we purchased from the camp store was just awful. Wouldn't light, it just smoked. It's not the first time we've had this problem with wood from an Ohio state park camp store.

The staff was super friendly and everyone we encountered was very nice, but it's certainly not somewhere I would want to spend more than a night.

    Long's Retreat Family Resort

    My family’s favorite place.

We’ve had a permanent site at Long’s for a couple of years now. My wife and kids want to live there for the summer, and I sure can’t argue. There is LOTS to do. Swimming, water slides, canoeing, go-cart racing, mini golf, and a full arcade give plenty of variety. Of course, relaxing by the campfire, grilling hot dogs and making s’mores is really what makes the time with the kids special. The owners are wonderful people who take pride in what they do, and very carefully select the right people to be part of their team. The showers and bathrooms are always squeaky clean and the grounds are exceptionally well maintained. I’ve found permanent campers and weekenders alike to be a great group of folks. Long’s Reatreat is the perfect place to unplug and unwind.

Carter Caves State Resort Park Campground

    Enjoyed our stay

Park was nice, clean and has friendly staff. We liked that we could walk to the bathrooms and not have to drive there. We stayed at site 100 and really enjoyed the shade trees. Showers are small but they work and there are only 3 stalls of toilets and 3 showers ( I believe) in the women’s side- unsure of men’s. Plenty to do, including a playground, pool, miniature golf, bike riding, horse back riding, hiking, etc. All sites have a picnic table and a grate over the fire pit. Water wells are easily accessible and they have washers and dryers as well. Check-in location was a bit confusing but eventually figured it out.

    Tar Hollow State Park Campground

Scenic but too close to neighbors

My friend and I recently stayed at the north ridge campsite, which is the tents only site at Tar Hollow State Park.  I had both positive and negative experiences.  Let's start with the positives.  It's a very secluded campsite so it really feels like you're one with nature.  The pit latrines are convenient for those emergency situations but they're not the cleanest but it is not a far drive to the flush toilets at the RV campsite area near the camp store.  Site 106 is a great site if you choose to stay here.  It is very flat, one of the most flat sites (I think 105 is more flat) and so my night's sleep was great.

Now for the negatives, which sadly outweigh the positives for my stay.

You are right next to your camping neighbors.  I have terrible luck and ended up staying next to a very inconsiderate and loud group that included their many dogs. Normally this wouldn't bother me but I could hear all of their conversations because we were so close to them.  You can hear snoring and other "nighttime" noises so just be aware others can and will hear you.  I wasn't able to find the water spigot right away because someone set up their tent right next to it but then was able to find it once they moved their tent.  This is more of a negative of the State Park but the hiking paths are not clearly marked and I am embarrassed to admit I did get lost in the woods.  The map they have is in black in white but the park uses a color system.  This could be solved by taking a picture of the colorful map right by the fire tower.

Overall, I don't think I would choose to return to this site for camping because you're just way to close to others around you.

Guide to West Portsmouth

Camping options near West Portsmouth, Ohio range from rustic tent sites to full hookup RV locations within southern Ohio's Appalachian foothills. The region sits at elevations between 600-1,000 feet with moderate climate conditions that include hot, humid summers and mild winters. What to do

Hiking exploration: At Shawnee State Park Campground, visitors can access multiple trails of varying difficulty. "Lots of good hiking, nice lake, plenty of shade and creeks," notes Jarrod M., who recommends specific campsites for better access to trail networks.

Cave tours: The region offers underground adventures within a short drive. At Carter Caves State Resort Park Campground, visitors can explore remarkable geological formations. "The park has a lot to do, not just the caves. There's tons of waterfalls off the trails, and other things to see. The caves are great to explore as well. Grab a ranger-guided tour and learn something!" advises Chris B.

Water recreation: Lake activities provide cool relief during summer months. "Just a beautiful park. Clean well maintained. Lots of amenities. Paddle boats, marina, 18 hole disc golf, bike park, huge dog park, store, archery range, playground and trails," writes John R. about Shawnee State Park.

What campers like

Secluded tent sites: Some campgrounds offer private camping spots away from crowds. "Unlike many Ohio State parks I've visited, the Shawnee campground has a variety of great tent sites. Several of these are hidden in the trees at the top of some steps and up a short path," shares Jay T., highlighting the appeal of tent site #12.

Family-friendly atmosphere: Long's Retreat Family Resort receives consistent praise for its kid-friendly amenities. "We have been going here for the last 6 summers with a big group (nearly 30 kids with us). Everyone always has such a great time and it is the highlight of all the kids summers," reports Kristi J., noting the variety of activities from water slides to arcade games.

Yurt accommodations: For those seeking yurt camping near West Portsmouth, Ohio, Ashland Huntington West KOA offers comfortable yurt rentals. "Very friendly people and my dog loved the dog park," mentions Heather G., highlighting one of the amenities available to yurt campers and other visitors.

What you should know

Limited cell service: Many campgrounds in the region have little to no mobile connectivity. At Tar Hollow State Park Campground, "It is pretty remote (no cell phone coverage at even the top of the hills), and really is a chance to 'get away' from the modern life," explains Jonathan W.

Water hookup challenges: Several campgrounds require extra equipment for connections. At Carter Caves, "You will need extra water hose and extension cords to get hooked up in a lot of the sites," advises Ron & Bonnie D.

Site selection importance: Campground layouts vary significantly across the region. "Most of the sites shaded and separated by trees. Love the privacy this provides," notes Chris S. about Iron Ridge - Lake Vesuvius, underscoring the value of researching specific sites before booking.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Multiple campgrounds offer recreational facilities beyond hiking. "The campground had fun amenities for kids, like a very small mini golf course and an outdoor screen for movie nights," shares Jay T. about Shawnee State Park.

Swimming options: Rocky Fork State Park Campground provides water recreation suitable for children. "Beach was clean and lake nice to swim and play in. Fishing was good," reports Theresa A., highlighting the lake's accessibility for families.

Safety considerations: Wildlife awareness remains important when camping with children. "Watch out for skunks, hope you see a wildcat or two, tell a ghost story, play some corn hole, watch out for bears," advises Becky H. from her experience at Carter Caves, suggesting activities while maintaining wildlife awareness.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Research utility connections before arrival. "We stayed on site 057, which is in full sun as it has no shade but does have full hookups. The site was very well kept and clean but could use some privacy from the roadway," shares Amanda S. about her Carter Caves experience.

Site leveling challenges: Some campgrounds present leveling difficulties. At Ashland Huntington West KOA, "Site was NOT very level. On gravel. Picnic tables and fire ring," notes Felicia H., suggesting RVers bring leveling equipment.

Space considerations: Larger RVs require careful site selection. Jarrod M. recommends specific sites at Rocky Fork State Park: "This is a very nice campground. Nice lake, boating, playgrounds, bath houses, some full hook up sites. There are more good sites than bad. 4,5,9,10, 147-165 those were my favorites."
