Alum Creek State Park Campground features a fenced dog beach where pets can swim off-leash, plus a separate dog park with large and small dog areas. Most campgrounds near Richwood accept pets with standard leash requirements, including Cross Creek Camping Resort, Berkshire Campgrounds, and Mt. Gilead State Park. Full hookup RV sites, primitive tent camping areas, and select cabins accommodate campers traveling with dogs. Campground pet policies typically limit pets to 2-3 per site with proof of current vaccinations required at check-in. The dog park at Alum Creek includes enough space for multiple games of dog frisbee to happen simultaneously, with balls, waste bags, water fountains, and trash bins provided.

Hiking trails throughout these campgrounds offer excellent opportunities for dog walking, though some trails intersect with nature preserves that prohibit pets. Berkshire Campgrounds maintains off-leash dog trails where pets can run freely through wooded areas. Campers report that Alum Creek's dog amenities make it particularly popular for pet owners, with many considering it one of the nicest campgrounds in Ohio specifically because of its pet facilities. Wildlife encounters are common on trails, with deer frequently spotted, so keeping dogs leashed outside designated areas is essential. Summer visitors should note that campground beaches become crowded by mid-season, making early morning or weekday visits preferable for dogs who need space or are uncomfortable around crowds.

      Scioto-Grove Metro Park

Can only stay there on Fridays and Saturdays

Only weekend stays and it ends in wintertime. I’m sure it’s pretty and all, but it’s hard to find legit, free dispersed camping in Ohio! Oh well, rest stops always work for car camping.

      Alum Creek State Park Campground

      The dog’s favorite campground!

This was the only park we’ve gone to this uear with both a large dog park AND a fenced in dog beach! Folks were friendly at the dog park with bunches of chairs set around like a conversation pit. Lots of water and dog tennis balls were available.

The dog beach was fenced so your dog can be off leash. There is even a fenced in area out in the water to keep the pooches from swimming across the Lake chasing geese.

The campground itself was quite nice and spacious. Some of the most private camping sites I’ve seen in Ohio. Shower facilities we a bit above average mad seemed to be looked after at least once a day (we were there in the off season).

IMHO, one of the nicest campgrounds in the state.

      Cross Creek Camping Resort

      Very nice resort

We stayed two nights here on our tour of Ohio. After staying in state parks, the narrow sites are close with no privacy. Our pull through site was on the (inner) road, so lots of golf carts, cars and campers passing by. All pull through sites are on the road side. The site is not level and our leveling system has the front wheels off the ground. Many full time units here beautiful patios and decor. Staff is nice and friendly. Trash pickup isn’t offered and the walk to dumpster would be excessive for unfit or handicapped. We would stay again. Amenities are clean, as described and dog Park is immaculate but small.

      Alum Creek State Park Campground

Beautiful State Park close to Columbus Ohio

Alum Creek State Park is a beautiful park and great campground just outside the hustle and bustle of downtown Columbus and minutes away from attractions such as the Columbus Zoo.

The campground has good sized sites and is wooded throughout with clean bath houses, well maintained roads, and easy access for big rigs.

There is also a very nice dog park in the park including dog beaches with lake access for your pups to swim.

We love this campground and the beautiful lake and appreciate the easy access to local attractions, shopping, and more.

      Alum Creek State Park Campground

great state park campground. There are some full hook ups but mostly just electric. They have pancake breakfast on Saturday mornings through summer and doughnuts on Sunday. Helpful camphost. There is a campground beach and boat launch. Lost of hiking paths in the campground and in the park area. A great dog park with lake entrance for the pups. tmThere is also some mountain bike trails. Plenty to do for everyone.

      Alum Creek State Park Campground

Would be 5 star except for this

Alum Creek is just beautiful, nice sites, most of them are at least partially shaded, lots of woods, hiking trails, the lake, it is what I think of when I think of State Park campground camping in Ohio. There are a couple problems. 1. Only ONE little dump station. This is a big campground, so if you're leaving Sunday, you better get up at the crack of dawn to get to the station, otherwise be prepared to wait in a long long line of RV's. We by-passed the long line and stopped at a different State Park campground on the way home and paid 10.00 to use their dump station. 2. They never answer their phone at the campground office. I mean NEVER. If you have a question you will just have to deal with the reserveamerica people who really know nothing other than what they read on the campground website. So basically you know as much as they do. It's maddening. We will go back, but it's a 2 hour drive so it won't be anytime soon.

      Alum Creek State Park Campground

Beautiful State Park with extra perks for the Dogs

In addition to having a pretty lake, lovely campsites that are spread apart nicely, clean facilities, lots of shade, boat ramps, etc.. this park is unique for it's Dog Park facility.

2 large fenced in field areas. One for small dogs, and one for large. There is enough room for several games of dog frisbee to happen at once. Then, there are 2 large fenced in areas for lake access. Balls, dog doo bags, trash bins.. all there. Lots of shade, water fountains, and plenty of running room. I can't rave about this park enough!

The only downside is there is poison ivy lacing the trail from the campsite down to the water, and the Dog Park portion is about 2 miles from the campsites.

      Delaware State Park Campground

This is our 4th trip here

We have never had a bad site at Delaware, rowdy neighbors on occasion but the park itself and the site are great. Lots of hiking trails, stocked fishing pond for kids, disc golf, dog park and the lake itself.

      Site 187 this trip.

    Guide to Richwood

Campgrounds near Richwood, Ohio range from state parks with hiking trails to private resorts offering full hookups. Situated in central Ohio at approximately 1,000 feet elevation, this area experiences four distinct seasons with moderate summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F. Winter camping requires preparation for temperatures that can drop below freezing from November through March.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Indian Lake State Park Campground, campers can access both the main lake and a stocked fishing pond. "The camp store is nice except the firewood was terrible. It was fresh cut and never did burn but other than that nice store. We also visited a local wine room (Fion) when staying at the park which was fun," notes Andrea F.

Shooting sports: Cardinal Center Campground offers extensive shooting facilities. "We have visited the Cardinal Center several times for shooting and waterfowl events but did camp there for the first time over Thanksgiving. They have a nice indoor pool and shower rooms attached," writes Andrea F. The center features pistol, rifle, trap, skeet, and archery ranges.

Boating access: Buck Creek State Park Campground provides multiple water access points for kayakers. "We also used the camper beach but to the left of it to launch our kayaks. Which was nice because you could back up to the pathway and park. Then drag your kayak down a short trail to the water," shares Melissa M.

    What campers like

Private campsites: Alum Creek State Park Campground offers secluded sites that campers consistently praise. "...the two things that bring me back to this campground year after year. We have never had a 'bad' campsite at the Alum Creek State Park Campground. Each camping space is separated by trees and brush," notes Sandy O.

Swimming options: Campers appreciate multiple swimming locations at many campgrounds. "The camp sites are spacious and private, surrounded by trees and brush. Beautiful walking trails. There's a small beach within the campground, a bigger public beach a short drive away," writes Catherine about Alum Creek.

Year-round facilities: Back 40 Campground receives high marks for its recreational amenities. "Nice admenities like a clubhouse with pool tables, clean flush toilets and shower areas, a nice small lake for swimming. It is off the road and well marked on the road," mentions Bret J.

    What you should know

Site selection tips: Mt. Gilead State Park Campground has varied campsite layouts that can affect your experience. "Our site had a deck right behind the camping pad because the site has a descent slope. The fire pit was down the slope which was cool being out of site from walkers," explains Bobby C.

Weather considerations: Site conditions can change rapidly with rainfall. "Be careful with rainy weather, some sites have flooded in poor weather," warns Katelyn P. about Alum Creek State Park Campground.

Reservation requirements: Berkshire Campgrounds has many long-term residents occupying prime spots. "From what I've been told you might be able to get into one if you book the whole season a year in advance," advises Catherine about lakefront sites at Alum Creek.

    Tips for camping with families

Swimming pool access: Cross Creek Camping Resort provides family-friendly water facilities. "The pool is really nice. They also have a playground for the kids. They also have themed-event weekends, which are really fun!" reports Catherine.

Playground equipment: Many campgrounds feature designated play areas. "This is a RV resort close to a lake with a lot of seasonal campers. It is busy on the weekend but was very quiet during the week. Plenty to do for the kids. Pool looks nice, was not open yet for the season," writes Dave B. about Cross Creek.

Weekend activities: Buck Creek organizes regular family events during peak seasons. "Camp host on I think lot 71 or there about were great at keeping the activities going. Every night there was a movie and you could buy root beer floats for $1!! And the kids loved it," shares Melissa M.

    Tips for RVers

Site leveling: Prepare for some uneven terrain at campgrounds throughout the region. "The sites and road were gravel. Our site was wooded with nice shade," notes Renee L. about Cardinal Center Campground.

Hookup variations: Pastime Campground offers different utility options across their sites. "There are 38 grass sites that are a bit snug, but mostly pleasant. New in June 2019 are 18 gravel padded sites, with lots of space. All sites are W/E. All the new gravel sites and half the grass ones have 50/30/20A electric, the rest are 30/20A," explains Ron G.

Pet-friendly trails: For those traveling with dogs, Berkshire Campgrounds offers dedicated pet areas. "This place is huge, tons of paths for walking and exploring. Our favorite part was the off leash dog trails that were a perfect place to let the pup run. We have struggled at some parks where the pet areas are very restrictive," mentions jess.
