Mill Creek Camping — Berlin Lake Wildlife Area

    Bad experience

Stayed here on Saturday night of July 4th weekend. Arrived after hours without a reservation. No information on how to self register or which campsites were available even though some sites are first come first served. Found an open site, set up and went to bed. There were fireworks (prohibited) and the campsite next to us played loud music but it was before quiet hours so we didn’t mind. The loud music turned into a party with alcohol (prohibited) and the loud music continued way past quiet hours. No campground host or personnel did anything about the noise/party. At 12:30am we moved campsites because we couldn’t sleep. We saw sheriff patrolling the campground - don’t know why they didn’t quiet the offenders.

The campground is large with many sites so the probability of inconsiderate people is higher. I won’t be returning.

    Big, beautiful lake!

Great park! Sites are spacious and level. Very clean park. There are several full hook-up sites. Electric sites near the lake. We stayed at site #96. New Bathrooms are under construction. Campground is flat and great for bike riding. Nice playground for kids. Dog park nearby. Camp is near beach & marina. Also many shops and restaurants within a 10 minute drive. We will definitely be coming back to Mosquito Lake!

Mill Creek Camping — Berlin Lake Wildlife Area

Busy, but not too bad :)

Stayed a night here near the end of June after a rainstorm. A few quick highlights:

    1. Because there are a ton of sites, you can expect one thing: variety. There are plenty of aluminum Airstream, Winnebago, fifth wheels, pull behind, and tents. You can expect to find a little bit of everything here.

    2. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, Mill Creek might not be for you. Most of the sites seem to be typically pretty packed. Generally, people respect quiet hours, but with sites so close to each other, noise is a factor.

    3. The surrounding area seems to be pretty spartan. There’s a grocery store about 10 minutes up the road, a bait shop about three minutes away, and a drive-through (with some light groceries and drinks) about two away. Nice enough folks in all three :) Super helpful and accommodating.

    4. Berlin lake seems to be the big draw. Plenty of boats, jet ski‘s, kayaks, and swimming opportunities. If that’s your thing, plan accordingly and you won’t be disappointed.

Overall, Mill Creek is a pretty solid site within driving distance of Akron / Canton. I’ll be back, with adjusted expectations.

Quick tip: My particular site was pretty muddy upon arrival. Granted, that was after a bit of rain. But it wouldn’t hurt to bring an extra pair of shoes ;-)

Quiet, peaceful, close to all the things

We stopped here for a couple nights to go to a Cleveland Guardians game and go to Cuyahoga National Park. It was within great proximity to both and had all the amenities the kids and I love. Swimming (wish it were open a little later…) laundry 24/7, a game room, store with just what we needed to pick up a few things, a pond that seemed to always have someone fishing at it (that’s a good thing) and a big wide sites to spread out and have a nice campfire in. (Wood available 24/7 and trash pick up at the site in the AM). It’s always nerve wracking when the fire pits are close to the rigs - loved that these sits were wide. And while there are likely people here it feels nice and spread out.

Good location but expensive for what you get

Pros: closest camping to Cuyahoga National Park, safe, professional (labeled envelopes with information at check-in and wood delivery) Cons: bathrooms weren’t cleaned or restocked as frequently as necessary (overflowing trash cans, TP empty by 5 pm), shower curtains/showers had mildew, truly dirty bathroom floors, had to drive 1/4 mile to the one trash dumpster, unlevel sites

One more thing: there’s a significant raccoon and skunk problem along the section with water/electric back-in spots. We got to know our neighbors very well over two nights as we helped each other fend off multiple raids by entire families of raccoons and one very large, very bold skunk. We lost two camping chairs to the skunks because there was no way to fight them off once they moved into our shelter and, even without spraying, skunks tend to leave a scent behind on anything that’s fabric.

The price is okay in that it is the closest to the national park and the next closest campgrounds are the state park campgrounds (West Branch and Mosquito Lake), but the state park grounds are MUCH nicer and about $15 less per night. If you have the time to drive and can plan your trip months in advance to get reservations, West Branch is a better alternative.

    West Branch State Park Campground

    A ++

Always a great time at West Branch. The staff are very friendly and care a great deal about the quality of everyone's experience - they inspect and clean each site after the sites are vacated. The quiet hours are truly quiet, the bathrooms are very clean and fresh. Decided to rent a pontoon for the day - the boats were also very clean and well kept - they also have the option of an inner tube or jet skis if you want to rent those as well!

    Mosquito Lake State Park Campground

    Great State Park Campground

We just got back from our first trip to Mosquito Lake State Park Campground. All in all, it was a great experience.

We stayed in site 67, which is a waterfront site, with electric. The water is about 25 yards from the pad, but is visible from the entire site. The site was spacious, but not as private as some of the others. There is some woods between this site and the sites on either side, but other sites are visible. The fire pits and picnic tables were staggered, so it created some distance to make it feel more private.

The campground as a whole, was very quiet. We stayed from Wednesday to Friday. The group next to us seemed a little rowdy when we first pulled in, but by 10:00 there was no noise anywhere near us.

Most sites seemed pretty level from side to side, but where we were, several had a slope from front to back. Away from the waterfront, most sites looked pretty level. The amount of space between sites varied from site to site. Some sites had woods on both sides, while others were pretty open. Some had nice large grassy areas, others were much smaller. Sites from 214-224 are in a cul de sac and are water front, but they were pretty close together with very little privacy between sites, if any. They are very close to the water though.

There are bathrooms and water scatter about, but from what I saw there was only 1 shower house.

Wal-mart and other shopping and restaurants were about 3 miles away. Park was easy to get to, only one turn for us off the highway. Lake was great for kayaking and paddleboarding. Very nice dog park in a different part of the park. There is a boat launch accessible from inside the campground.

Dump station has 2 lanes which was nice when checking out. Fresh water fill up was also located near the dump station.

Linesville Campground — Pymatuning State Park

Great Park, Close to the Water!

The Linesville Campground is a mid-sized state park campground with level, wooded sites, right on the Pymantuning Lake. A short walk to the marina which hires boats and sells snacks& fuel. There is a campground fish cleaning station with complimentary fridges/freezers.

The amenities are well kept with plenty of space, located in the center of the park. There is also a laundry. They accommodate tents, RV’s and have cabins also. RV dump station and water fill up conveniently located in the center of the grounds.

The township of Linesville is just 5min drive from the park entrance. Great weekend escape from Pittsburgh. They welcome furry friends!

What campers like

Clean shower facilities: Despite being in rural settings, many campgrounds maintain excellent bathroom facilities. At West Branch State Park Campground, campers consistently praise the cleanliness: "Best bathrooms around! Showers great. Bathrooms great. Lots of 'lakefront' spots. Dog park is pretty great, too!"

Lakefront camping: Direct water access from campsites ranks as a top feature in the region. Mill Creek Camping offers particularly good waterside options with "a HUGE lakefront site... Beach is right next door too! Great trails, clean facilities, no complaints."

What you should know

Uneven camping sites: Many campsites in the Parkman area require careful leveling. At West Branch, one camper warned: "We were only off 2 inches side to side but front to back we had to lower the front 15 inches. The jack was down as low as it would go and we were still off by 1.5 inches."

Limited tent facilities: Some campgrounds have fewer amenities for tent campers. At Mosquito Lake, a visitor noted: "Only bad are no real bathrooms except at the front of the park. No place to wash dishes. Rough if you're tent camping."

Hillside tent sites: Kool Lakes Family RV Park and other campgrounds feature some tent sites on hills requiring short hikes. A visitor to Punderson described "Very cool 'hill' sites that you have to hike up or down 20-100 feet to your wooded site."

Tips for camping with families

Playground varieties: Several parks feature unique playground designs beyond standard equipment. At Mill Creek Camping — Berlin Lake Wildlife Area, families appreciate the accessibility: "Can skateboard, scooter, or bike throughout the whole campground."

Weekend activities: Many campgrounds schedule regular events for children. West Branch hosts "an ice cream social on Saturday evenings that my children always love to attend."

Tent site selection: For family camping with limited gear, consider location carefully. Punderson State Park offers well-positioned sites where "the sites are pretty far apart and you feel secluded but, at the same time, the bathrooms are close by."

Swimming alternatives: Beyond beaches, several parks have developed swimming areas with additional features. At Woodside Lake Park, "The swimming pond has inflatables and boat rentals. There's good fishing, and typically lots of activities."

Tips from RVers

Electric reliability: Check amperage before booking as many sites offer limited power. At Punderson, an RVer reported, "Very few full hookups. Rest of the sites only have 15-20 amp service."

Site leveling challenges: Many RV sites require significant leveling equipment. One Punderson camper noted, "The lots are not even close to level. You will need a lot of blocks to get close to level. Saw one RV with auto levelers with his tire about foot off the ground."

Water quality concerns: Some campgrounds have mineral-heavy well water. Check water sources when reserving, and as one experienced RVer suggests, "Bring plenty of filters and plan on sanitizing your system after staying there."

Off-season availability: Several parks near Parkman, including West Branch, remain open year-round, providing yurt camping options in the off-season when fewer RVs are present. A camper noted, "Going again, as long as I don't have the kids, I would try for a test space as far from the road and is deep in the forest as possible."
