Best Cabin Camping near New Franklin, OH

Several cabin options near New Franklin, Ohio provide rustic to modern accommodations with varying amenities. Clay's Resort Jellystone Park features cabins with electric hookups, heating, and basic furniture, though cleanliness can be inconsistent. "This level of cleanliness might be expected in a $50/night cabin, but for the price we paid, it is beyond ridiculous and incredibly disappointing," noted one camper about their experience with cabin conditions. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park in Akron/Canton also offers cabins with electricity and some kitchen facilities, situated in a family-friendly environment with recreational activities.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Countryside Campground and Maple Lakes Campground provide cabin rentals with different comfort levels, typically including beds, basic furniture, and sometimes kitchen facilities. Pet policies vary by campground, with Clay's Park, Jellystone Park Akron/Canton, and Maple Lakes allowing pets in certain cabins. According to one visitor, "The bunk beds have very thin RV style bunk bed mattresses. And the master bed mattress was a weak memory foam. Needs to invest in better mattresses." Most campgrounds require advance reservations, especially during summer months when availability becomes limited.

Most cabin rentals include beds and basic furniture but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Cooking facilities range from simple fire pits to mini-kitchens with microwaves and small refrigerators. Maple Lakes Campground offers more spacious cabin options with better spacing between units. Firewood is available for purchase at most campgrounds but tends to be relatively expensive. West Branch State Park Campground provides more secluded cabin options in a natural setting but with fewer amenities than private resorts. On-site camp stores at Jellystone Parks offer basic provisions, though bringing essential supplies is recommended.

    Salem-Lisbon Ohio KOA

    A Traditional KOA Experience

This was a Fall camping experience in a cabin as we knew it would be cold in the evenings.  We also had a non-camper with us so this was a nice compromise.  We had a cozy cabin with 2 bathrooms.  We also had a small kitchen where we could cook when we didn't want to cook over the fire.  This was another way for us to social distance as COVID-19 was still an issue.

I also took photos of the camping bathrooms as each KOA does it a little differently. You will notice that the bathroom is unisex.  It is a single bathroom (toilet and shower).  This is in the center of the campground.  The bathroom photos below are not of the cabin.

The cabin you see here is the Deluxe. "Deluxe Cabin(More than two Bathrooms), Patio Deluxe Cabin(w/ Bathroom)- Evergreen KL8-9-10 Perfect for large family or two couples with two queen bedrooms, sleeping loft, 1 1/2 baths, kitchenette, 3 tvs located in quiet corner with shade trees. Sorry, Not Pet Friendly! Linens are included in all seasons except Winter. Please bring pool towels." Taken from Reservation Email.

For 2 nights it totaled $153.00 which is a good price compared to other cabins we were looking at within the region.  We could have had others camping in the tent section of the campground so it is an easy way to have a mixed crowd for a camping outing.

I did type in some information into the Special Requests within my reservation booking online, as I had a question about who had to pick up the key as a friend lived closer.  No one responded and I had to call them.

Cabins Check in is at 3PM and Check out is at 12 PM

We were able to buy firewood from the KOA camp office. They bring it to your campsite and we were able to grill hotdogs and other food items on our camp fire.  Do read the general information closely and look at number 15 for a free scoop of ice cream.

https://www.whitehousefruitfarm.com/donuts  We did a donut run and explored the farm for our outing for the day.

We also spent the day checking out a local mill https://www.millcreekmetroparks.org/visit/places/mill-creek-park/lantermans-mill/

    Mohican Adventures Campground and Cabins

    Family Friendly

Great campground with lots to do! RV sites are a little small and close together, but comes with a picnic table and fire pit. There are back in and pull through RV spots - along with nice shady spots for rent camping. Cabins are also available. Great spot to camp if interested in tubing/canoeing/kayaking down Mohican river. When you arrive everyone in the vehicle checks in, and then someone on a golf cart takes you to your spot. Campground has an indoor pool and hot tub. Also has pond with paddle boards and paddle boats that need to be reserved at additional cost. Quite a few playgrounds available and mountain bike trails. Small creek runs along the campground. All guests are given a wrist band that gives you a discount at the Trails End restaurant and at Mohican Adventures across the street.

    Mohican State Park Campground

    Winter Time But No Snow

We stayed on a full hook up site (turned off for the season) that had a nice concrete level pad. There was also a nice side pad that kept our chairs clean. A little further back in the campground to be close to the shower house that was open. Then found out that comfort station next to us was open - nice! Also close the water which was full and rushing all weekend.

The camp store was open on the weekend and the staff was nice to chat with. They had wood, but it was slab cut which doesn’t burn very well. We decided against it. Lots of snacks and other items still available.

Some sites were really close to the water, almost too close as the water flooded a few spots. The campground is nice to walk if you like to get in a little workout. They also have small camper cabins and them much bigger cabins which a few are pet friendly.

We went on a hike by the covered bridge to one of the waterfalls. Lots of trials to choose from.

    West Branch State Park Campground

Well kept campground with access to beach and dock

Each campsite in on a leveled cement pad and comes with a fire ring a picnic table. There is plenty of room around your site and you don't feel crowded. Most sites offer nice tree coverage for shade. The restrooms and showers are very clean and well taken care of. There is also a laundry facility and sink outside each one for washing dishes and water fountains throughout the park. There is a nice beachfront for swimming and then a dock that be reached from outside the park. A beautiful lake for kayaking or boating. The store has most camping needs in it and once a week they host an ice cream social. Has a very nice playground and a sand volleyball court. There are some hiking trails, but nothing extensive.

    Roundup Lake RV Resort

Great Lively Place with lots of Amenities

Starting off, everyone from the employees to the other campers were super friendly! My boyfriend and I rented The Park Model Cabin which was sort of a half trailer with a full bathroom and full kitchen. The bed was the only detractor of our trip, as it was mostly springs. We brought our air mattress in for the second night and slept much better. The themed weekends throughout the season are fun and festive and there are a lot of activities to do and participate!

    Mohican State Park Campground

    Unexpected Treat in Central Ohio

As part of a nearly 200-mile bikepacking ride, this was our last stop! We spent 2 nights in their "Class B" area down in the Mohican River Valley and loved it.

The oddly named “Class A” camping area offers everything from full-hook up camping slots for campers large and small, as well as just electric sites and 10 “walk-in” primitive sites, and cabins -- all of which are reservable. This area has all the bells and whistles of a modern campground with an environmental learning center, a nice outdoor pool, clean showers and bathrooms, an extensive playground and hiking and mountain biking trails right out the front door.

The “Class B” area offers 25 primitive sites on a first-come, first-served basis. It is almost 6 miles by road from the “A” services, but only a 2-mile flatish hike along the river trail. At these sites, there are only pit toilets and a water pump. Each site has a picnic table and a small fire ring. There is also a large group camping area just a few miles away from the primitive “Class B” area.

Tubing and canoeing are available within the park, but there are also several canoe outfitters in the area which provide rental / pick up services. The sheer number of these businesses makes me think that summer time can be crowded!!

Beautiful shaded trails meander all throughout the park and they boast some of the most challenging mountain biking in the mid-west, so read your trail maps. Hiking, equestrian and winter snowmobile trails also offer some great opportunities to get out and stretch your legs throughout the year. There is also a safe and convenient, bike lane / bike path into nearby Loudonville, which has a small grocery story and the usual fast-food restaurants.

Note: The only reason why this park didn't get a 5 star was due to their customer service. It was absolutely lousy, confusing, and the young folks working behind the counter acted as if they didn't want to be there and/or hadn't been trained. We almost left, but since we had cycled 42 miles to get there that day, we chose to stay and enjoyed our time in their Class B sites.

    West Branch State Park Campground

    Wooded Waterside Sites

Make reservations! (6 months in advance).  Waterside sites fill up quickly! Check in is very easy as you pass the camp store on your way in. All campsites have a fire ring and picnic table.  West Branch has private, spacious, shady sites. We can launch our kayaks right from our campsite. The shower house and bathrooms are large and clean. There is even a book exchange shelf at the shower house in case of rainy days. The park office loans games and sports equipment to campers. Washers and dryers are also at the shower house. There is an outside sink to wash up dishes. Bring your boat or kayak. There are many inlets to explore or fish. There is a small beach at the campground but a larger one on the other side of the lake. There is a boat launch at the campground.  There are playgrounds for the children. An ice cream social is held on Saturday evenings that my children always love to attend. There is a newer dog park near the intersection of Rock Spring  and Esworthy roads. There are many scenic hiking trails at West Branch. Bridal trails are located on Esworthy Rd. West Branch is our favorite campground and we make sure to visit every year.

    Malabar Farm State Park Campground

    Rustic

I found Malabar Farm in Lucas, OH on my way home from Mom’s house. Never heard of it before and I have been this way for over 20 years now. Louis Bromfield was a conservationist and among many other things (including winning a Pulitzer) he was in the forefront of organic and self-sustaining gardening. This place is amazing! ( and would be an excellent home schoolers camping trip!) Not your typical going hiking kinda campground (there are trails but they are not “major”) you come here to step away from city life and tour a working farm. Ohio countryside at its best. Primitive camping with a gravel parking pad and water, fire ring, picnic table and hitching post. No reservations, this is a first come campground. There’s also a small rentable cabin open year round. Definitely worth a visit and very family oriented events. ( your teenager will roll their eyes at you but probably secretly enjoy the visit)

    Atwood Lake Park Campground

    Incredible!

The Atwood Lake Campground is a true gem in a beautiful area of eastern Ohio! We’ve visited the Atwood region many times in the past but have never camped - but after this visit we’ll be back for sure. The campground is relatively new, with the campground area being completely revamped beginning in 2017. There are two overnight camping areas with seasonal sites in a separate section; we stayed in “Camp H” which is the newest area. There is a huge bathhouse with two sets of men’s and women’s restrooms and shower facilities along with a very nice laundry area. Adjoining the bathhouse area is a beautiful pavilion and children’s playground - all of which overlooks Atwood Lake. The campsites are nicely spaced though if you’re in the inner loop as we were or even some of the outer ring sites you’ll be looking right into your neighbor’s site. All sites are FHU on level concrete pads and include a metal picnic table and fire ring. If needed there are two very well equipped dump stations if you prefer to use them instead of the sewer connection at your site. Many sites are on cul de sacs directly on the lake with docks and fishing areas adjacent to the campsites. Lots of hiking trails, paved bike paths, a swimming beach and restaurant are in a nearby area. We loved the campground and will return soon!

Guide to New Franklin

The area sits in northeast Ohio's rolling hills where the average summer temperature reaches 82°F, making it ideal for outdoor recreation from April through October. Winter cabin rentals remain available at several locations with indoor amenities for off-season camping.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: West Branch State Park Campground offers excellent fishing in Kirwan Reservoir, which connects to many campsites. "We can launch our kayaks right from our campsite. There are many inlets to explore or fish," notes one visitor at West Branch. The park maintains a clean camper beach area for swimming after a day of fishing.

Trail exploration: Explore the hiking system at Findley State Park Campground, which features interconnected paths for day hikes. "Findley state park is well maintained large park! We can easily get lost on 3 mile hikes in the woods and still be on marked paths! The roads are paved and excellent for biking and skating," reports a camper.

Horseback riding: At Canton / East Sparta KOA Holiday, visitors can ride horses on-site. "Took the kids on the horse ride and they loved it. All staff were very friendly," says one reviewer. The ranch offers guided trail rides appropriate for beginners and experienced riders.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Maple Lakes Campground receives praise for its site layout and natural setting. "This is a beautiful location. Lots of long term campers. Beautiful trees and the fishing lakes had lovely benches," mentions a visitor. Most sites provide reasonable spacing between units for privacy.

Clean facilities: Evergreen Park RV Resort maintains exceptionally clean bathrooms and amenities. "The club house and pool are immaculate, including public restrooms and showers," notes one reviewer. Their indoor pool remains open year-round, allowing for swimming even during colder months.

Entertainment options: Families appreciate the numerous activities at Jellystone Park Akron/Canton. "This place is AMAZING for families with kids! Tons of planned activities (about every hour) for everyone to enjoy. Huge pool, gem mine, mini golf, and homemade ice cream!" writes a camper who visited with children.

What you should know

Reservation timing: Popular cabin rentals book quickly, especially at state parks. "Very nice, comfortable campground, kids loved it. Only downfall is trying to find an open spot for reservations. Place is booked most of the time. If you're planning a holiday weekend you need to book 6 months in advance," advises a visitor to Findley State Park.

Cabin quality varies: Cabin amenities differ significantly between campgrounds. At Countryside Campground, cabins are basic but functional. One visitor mentioned the campground has "awesome campground with many amenities," but specific cabin details should be confirmed before booking.

Seasonal considerations: Firewood costs more in winter months. "Fire sold here, small bundles for $8. Gets expensive for longer stays," notes a Clay's Park visitor. Several campgrounds restrict outside firewood, requiring purchase on-site.

Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: Jellystone Parks offer structured children's activities. One visitor commented: "This is hands down one of the best campgrounds that we have stayed at. They always are thinking of new things for the kids to do. It also a very laidback atmosphere for the adults."

Beach access: Several cabin rental locations near New Franklin feature swimming options. "The lake was virtually algae free, and even during this pandemic, it didn't feel over crowded at any point. My kids really enjoyed the entire time and were wore out!" shares a Clay's Park camper.

Playground facilities: Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA offers playgrounds and recreational areas. "Swimming (wish it were open a little later…) laundry 24/7, a game room, store with just what we needed to pick up a few things, a pond that seemed to always have someone fishing at it (that's a good thing)," notes a visitor, highlighting the family-friendly amenities.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Choose cabin locations carefully for access to hookups. "Paid for premium pull through, ended up being an uneven gravel pathway with an old picnic table, no patio or easy hookups," warns one visitor, highlighting the importance of confirming site details when booking cabin accommodations near New Franklin.

Water quality: Water conditions vary significantly between cabin rental locations. American Wilderness Campground receives consistent positive feedback about utilities. "Nice clean campground with lots of activities and also amenities the bathrooms and shower house were clean as well felt so comfortable made lots of friends," reports one visitor.

Seasonal rentals: Many cabin locations offer extended stay options. "Although my recent visit to do a recon for a seasonal site was in the off season, it was a really good first impression. Friendly staff, and found what I hope will be be good spot with reservoir in the distance and leaves on the trees," notes a camper considering longer-term cabin rental at Countryside Campground.
