Mill Creek Camping — Berlin Lake Wildlife Area

      Bad experience

Stayed here on Saturday night of July 4th weekend. Arrived after hours without a reservation. No information on how to self register or which campsites were available even though some sites are first come first served. Found an open site, set up and went to bed. There were fireworks (prohibited) and the campsite next to us played loud music but it was before quiet hours so we didn’t mind. The loud music turned into a party with alcohol (prohibited) and the loud music continued way past quiet hours. No campground host or personnel did anything about the noise/party. At 12:30am we moved campsites because we couldn’t sleep. We saw sheriff patrolling the campground - don’t know why they didn’t quiet the offenders.

The campground is large with many sites so the probability of inconsiderate people is higher. I won’t be returning.

      Big, beautiful lake!

Great park! Sites are spacious and level. Very clean park. There are several full hook-up sites. Electric sites near the lake. We stayed at site #96. New Bathrooms are under construction. Campground is flat and great for bike riding. Nice playground for kids. Dog park nearby. Camp is near beach & marina. Also many shops and restaurants within a 10 minute drive. We will definitely be coming back to Mosquito Lake!

Mill Creek Camping — Berlin Lake Wildlife Area

Busy, but not too bad :)

Stayed a night here near the end of June after a rainstorm. A few quick highlights:

      1. Because there are a ton of sites, you can expect one thing: variety. There are plenty of aluminum Airstream, Winnebago, fifth wheels, pull behind, and tents. You can expect to find a little bit of everything here.

      2. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, Mill Creek might not be for you. Most of the sites seem to be typically pretty packed. Generally, people respect quiet hours, but with sites so close to each other, noise is a factor.

      3. The surrounding area seems to be pretty spartan. There’s a grocery store about 10 minutes up the road, a bait shop about three minutes away, and a drive-through (with some light groceries and drinks) about two away. Nice enough folks in all three :) Super helpful and accommodating.

      4. Berlin lake seems to be the big draw. Plenty of boats, jet ski‘s, kayaks, and swimming opportunities. If that’s your thing, plan accordingly and you won’t be disappointed.

Overall, Mill Creek is a pretty solid site within driving distance of Akron / Canton. I’ll be back, with adjusted expectations.

Quick tip: My particular site was pretty muddy upon arrival. Granted, that was after a bit of rain. But it wouldn’t hurt to bring an extra pair of shoes ;-)

Quiet, peaceful, close to all the things

We stopped here for a couple nights to go to a Cleveland Guardians game and go to Cuyahoga National Park. It was within great proximity to both and had all the amenities the kids and I love. Swimming (wish it were open a little later…) laundry 24/7, a game room, store with just what we needed to pick up a few things, a pond that seemed to always have someone fishing at it (that’s a good thing) and a big wide sites to spread out and have a nice campfire in. (Wood available 24/7 and trash pick up at the site in the AM). It’s always nerve wracking when the fire pits are close to the rigs - loved that these sits were wide. And while there are likely people here it feels nice and spread out.

Good location but expensive for what you get

Pros: closest camping to Cuyahoga National Park, safe, professional (labeled envelopes with information at check-in and wood delivery) Cons: bathrooms weren’t cleaned or restocked as frequently as necessary (overflowing trash cans, TP empty by 5 pm), shower curtains/showers had mildew, truly dirty bathroom floors, had to drive 1/4 mile to the one trash dumpster, unlevel sites

One more thing: there’s a significant raccoon and skunk problem along the section with water/electric back-in spots. We got to know our neighbors very well over two nights as we helped each other fend off multiple raids by entire families of raccoons and one very large, very bold skunk. We lost two camping chairs to the skunks because there was no way to fight them off once they moved into our shelter and, even without spraying, skunks tend to leave a scent behind on anything that’s fabric.

The price is okay in that it is the closest to the national park and the next closest campgrounds are the state park campgrounds (West Branch and Mosquito Lake), but the state park grounds are MUCH nicer and about $15 less per night. If you have the time to drive and can plan your trip months in advance to get reservations, West Branch is a better alternative.

      West Branch State Park Campground

      A ++

Always a great time at West Branch. The staff are very friendly and care a great deal about the quality of everyone's experience - they inspect and clean each site after the sites are vacated. The quiet hours are truly quiet, the bathrooms are very clean and fresh. Decided to rent a pontoon for the day - the boats were also very clean and well kept - they also have the option of an inner tube or jet skis if you want to rent those as well!

      Mosquito Lake State Park Campground

      Great State Park Campground

We just got back from our first trip to Mosquito Lake State Park Campground. All in all, it was a great experience.

We stayed in site 67, which is a waterfront site, with electric. The water is about 25 yards from the pad, but is visible from the entire site. The site was spacious, but not as private as some of the others. There is some woods between this site and the sites on either side, but other sites are visible. The fire pits and picnic tables were staggered, so it created some distance to make it feel more private.

The campground as a whole, was very quiet. We stayed from Wednesday to Friday. The group next to us seemed a little rowdy when we first pulled in, but by 10:00 there was no noise anywhere near us.

Most sites seemed pretty level from side to side, but where we were, several had a slope from front to back. Away from the waterfront, most sites looked pretty level. The amount of space between sites varied from site to site. Some sites had woods on both sides, while others were pretty open. Some had nice large grassy areas, others were much smaller. Sites from 214-224 are in a cul de sac and are water front, but they were pretty close together with very little privacy between sites, if any. They are very close to the water though.

There are bathrooms and water scatter about, but from what I saw there was only 1 shower house.

Wal-mart and other shopping and restaurants were about 3 miles away. Park was easy to get to, only one turn for us off the highway. Lake was great for kayaking and paddleboarding. Very nice dog park in a different part of the park. There is a boat launch accessible from inside the campground.

Dump station has 2 lanes which was nice when checking out. Fresh water fill up was also located near the dump station.

    What to do

Fishing activities: Mosquito Lake State Park Campground offers extensive shoreline fishing access along its 7,850-acre lake. "Great park for fishing. Campground is flat and great for bike riding. Nice playground for kids. Dog park nearby. Camp is near beach & marina," shares Heidi B.

Archery practice: Mosquito Lake State Park Campground maintains a dedicated archery range open to campers. "We come here at least once, sometimes twice per year. We like to bring our bows and use the archery range," notes Karen D.

Watercraft rentals: Multiple boat options await at Headwaters Park, where guests can rent various watercraft for exploring the lake. Rebecca G. mentions, "Various watercraft rentals available, but look at availability before you go if that is included in your plans."

Hiking trails: Several paths connect glamping sites to natural features. "There are many scenic hiking trails at West Branch. Bridal trails are located on Esworthy Rd," states Alisa G.

    What campers like

Private waterfront sites: West Branch State Park Campground offers secluded lakeside camping spots. "We're at site 160. No electricity, no hook ups, but a HUGE lakefront site. We're in a self contained RV so it's not a problem for us. Beach is right next door too!" reports Rino S.

Unique hilltop camping: Punderson State Park Campground features elevated tent sites with distinctive terrain advantages. "I had originally gotten lot #81 but quickly got it switched to #83 because it was just waaaay better. Flatter ground and I was able to go deeper into the woods," explains Zachary A.

Clean shower facilities: Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA maintains well-kept bathroom facilities. A visitor noted, "The KOA Bath house trailer was very clean, easy to utilize the outdoor kitchen."

Kid-friendly recreation: Numerous playgrounds and activities keep children entertained. "The swimming pond has inflatables and boat rentals. There's good fishing, and typically lots of activities," mentions James S. about Woodside Lake Park.

    What you should know

Site levelness issues: Several campgrounds feature uneven terrain requiring preparation. "The lots are not even close to level. You will need a lot of blocks to get close to level. Saw one RV with auto levelers with his tire about foot off the ground," warns Coy about Punderson State Park.

Water quality varies: Woodside Lake Park has reported water supply concerns at certain sites. "I stayed at this park for 2 months in 2023...I left due to iron & sulfur laden well water that is provided in at least half the park. I spent hundreds of dollars trying to filter and clean up the water to no avail," cautions Jerry L.

Seasonal facilities: Most upscale glamping accommodations close during winter months. "Season: April 28 to October 15" is listed for American Wilderness Campground, while Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA operates from "May 1 to October 15."

Reservation requirements: Popular lakefront sites book quickly at many parks. "Make reservations! (6 months in advance). Waterside sites fill up quickly!" advises Alisa G. about West Branch State Park.

    Tips for camping with families

Playgrounds and nature centers: Countryside Campground provides numerous recreation options for children. "Nice park with ample parking space. Rec hall, playground, dog park," reports John R.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Children enjoy exploring local ecosystems. "If your kids are 8 and under they'll love the nature playground and nets provided to catch critters," shares Joe F. about Mosquito Lake State Park.

Swimming options: Multiple parks offer water recreation for families. "Beautiful clean serene park with absolutely stunning beach views at sunset," notes Andrew V. about American Wilderness Campground.

Camp store conveniences: Many locations maintain on-site stores with essentials. "The park is very well maintained, has a nice playground and cute camp store. A good amount of secluded and shaded sites," mentions Daniel U. about Punderson State Park.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: American Wilderness Campground provides complete services for RVs with varying amperage options. "We had a nice time the place was clean and the people were nice as in other campers we had a good time we went to the pavilion to a get together," shares Travis O.

Pad materials: Surface conditions vary across campgrounds, affecting leveling and stability. "Large campground with gravel sites. When we arrived the kids were trick or treating to each camp spot," notes Erin about Countryside Campground.

Pull-through accessibility: Some parks offer easier access sites for larger rigs. "Small camp but has great shower/restrooms conveniently located. If you can afford it, get the pull through site," recommends Rae Ann P.

Overnight options: Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA accommodates late arrivals with special arrangements. "They were accommodating to our late arrival and left a map and gate key at the office for the late arrivers. The site was level and easy to hook up to," explains Scott C.
