    Camp Sequoia

    Quiet, Friendly Campground

We really enjoyed our stay. The hosts were very welcoming and helpful. Delivered our firewood right to our site. Lots of shade trees, beautiful well groomed trails for walking. Even a dog park, which our Golden Retriever really enjoyed.

    Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday

    Nice campground

I stayed at this place when it was B&B and it is now a KOA. Several new sites were added and the park appears to be much cleaner. The restrooms are nice and the camp personnel are friendly. There is a dog park for walking the dog but with so much driveway I just walk the dog around the park. They have several dog bag stations around the park to make clean up easy. There are 3 playgrounds and boat area on the lake. I believe you can rent boats to fish even though I never have. I will definitely stay here again.

    Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday

    First Trip of the season

We enjoyed the stay at this campground. They have all of the KOA amenities pool, lazy river, jump pillow, playground and dog park. Entire campground was clean and well maintained. This campground also sits on the shores of Hogback Lake which is an all sports lake. Johnny Appleseed Campground

    Great location

The location here is pretty crazy it’s right in the middle of town but feels like a park there is a river and wooded area that makes you feel like you are in nature but you are just a parking lot away from an arena and college. There is a playground and a dog park. Here as well as ball diamonds. This is a great family friendly place but is very very busy during the season.

    Harrison Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet place to get away

We have been here a few times. Really enjoy the secluded sites and the lake. It’s a small campground but it’s clean and quiet. Most sites don’t have water hookups but they do have electric. There isn’t much to do outside of the campground but there is a nice lake with canoe and kayak rentals. Very pet friendly and even has a dog beach.

    Harrison Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet, Off the Beaten Path

We like this place a lot. Tucked away in NW Ohio, close to the Michigan & Indiana border.

We were in the north campground. Sites are all level, many very spacious which is unusual for Ohio SPs. No FHUs but don't let that stop you from visiting.

    Johnny Appleseed Campground

The pet friendliest place so far

They have a tremendous pet park with a well maintained yard. The only problem so far has been the water distribution. But the price is very affordable. My site was 30 dollars a night. Bath house and bathrooms are very nicely kept clean. And there is a river right beside it.

Guide to Montpelier

Montpelier, Ohio sits at an elevation of 846 feet with relatively flat terrain surrounded by farmland. Winters bring significant snowfall averaging 37 inches annually while summers reach average highs around 82°F. The camping season typically runs from April through October, with most campgrounds in the area closing for winter operations.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Harrison Lake State Park Campground offers a 95-acre no-wake lake popular for fishing. "The lake is nice for swimming and there are bike rentals which was fun as well," notes Sherrie W. about the park's recreational options.

Dark sky viewing: Lake Hudson Recreation Area has a special designation for stargazers. "Holy Stars!! The best part of this campground is the stars at night! This is a dark sky preserve campground and the stars are the show," says Michelle M. The preserve status means minimal light pollution for exceptional night sky viewing.

Winter recreation: Pokagon State Park Campground offers year-round camping with winter activities. A reviewer named Amy K. describes it as having a "toboggan run" among its many amenities, making it one of the few area campgrounds with dedicated winter recreation options.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Many campers appreciate the natural buffers at area campgrounds. "The sites are spacious. Well maintained park with lots of trees, asphalt, and generally level," notes Steve L. about Harrison Lake State Park.

Historical attractions: Sauder Village Campground offers a unique camping experience near a living history museum. "The historical village is an easy 10 minute stroll and worth visiting!" states Lisa D., highlighting an educational opportunity not available at other area campgrounds.

Lake access: Lake Hudson Recreation Area provides direct lake access from some sites. As Jennie S. describes: "My site has a path right out to the lake. My 2p tent could easily fit on this lakeside spot but it is sadly much too windy on the lake today."

What you should know

Shower facilities vary: Not all campgrounds provide modern shower facilities. At Lake Hudson Recreation Area, "You do have access to drinking water, and there is non-flushing toilet (like a port-o-potty)," explains Meghan R., adding "no showers" among the facilities.

Highway proximity: Some campgrounds experience road noise. At Jellystone Park at Barton Lake, one reviewer notes that "Traffic on road can be heard at the sites near the back," which may affect light sleepers.

Site variation: Within the same campground, site quality and privacy can differ significantly. At Harrison Lake, Ari A. points out: "The North Campground has larger sites spaced a bit apart to afford you some privacy...The South Campground has smaller sites that were much more closely packed together."

Tips for camping with families

Splash pads for kids: Several dog friendly campgrounds near Montpelier offer water play areas. At Sauder Village Campground, Amanda K. describes "a cool splash pad, a little lake to fish in and close to running water," providing multiple activities for children.

Activity scheduling: Loveberry's Funny Farm Campground organizes special events for families. Kary M. shares that they have "weekend activities ranging from the local zoo coming in, a magician, or all out campground water war!" which keeps children engaged throughout their stay.

Multiple pool options: Family-focused campgrounds often provide swimming alternatives. At Jellystone Park, one camper appreciates that they have "a smaller water park for the smaller kids too," allowing age-appropriate water recreation.

Tips from RVers

Hookup limitations: RVers should note the specific utilities available. At Lake Hudson Recreation Area, Steven S. explains: "Our camper is self contained so this campground was a test of just how well all the systems work... They don't sell firewood there but a short drive gets you deal from the local farmer, the campground has no dump station."

Reservation planning: Popular pet-friendly campgrounds near Montpelier require advance booking. Tiffany H. advises about Jellystone Park: "Only complaint would be that if you are planning a summer weekend you have to book wayyyyy in advance due to demand."

Electric-only sites: Some campgrounds offer electric hookups without other utilities. Hillary W. at Harrison Lake notes: "Some of the non-electric sites were used by RVs running generators all day and night," which may create noise issues for those expecting quiet camping.
