    Harrison Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet place to get away

We have been here a few times. Really enjoy the secluded sites and the lake. It’s a small campground but it’s clean and quiet. Most sites don’t have water hookups but they do have electric. There isn’t much to do outside of the campground but there is a nice lake with canoe and kayak rentals. Very pet friendly and even has a dog beach.

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Can be crowded, but a good park overall

We were a bit surprised that despite having a paid reservation , we still had to pay a $20 Day usage fee to enter the park, but no matter. This is a sprawling and sometimes confusing campground to find your way in. But the sites are generally shady if a bit close together. There are five facilities with showers and running water and six pit toilets. drinking water is accessible throughout the park.
The majority of sites have six person tables, though some, especially in the new 385-416 loop have little four person tables. These are also the least shaded.
Campground and facilities are clean and well maintained.
The General Store is one of the most impressively well stocked I have ever seen. Equipment, toys, tools, food souvenirs, you name it. Good dry firewood is $6.50 a bundle in the store, $7 on the honor system after hours. It burns fast, so you might want to buy more than you think. The store is open until 9:00 Friday & Saturday, but only 2;PM on Sunday and never on Monday. Keep that in mind if you're doing a 3-day weekend as we did. When checking out, look up to see the beautiful wooden canoe with wildlife inlaid wood.
Fire pits are mostly round iron with non-adjustable swing-away grills. Booking is through Indiana DNR/ Reserve America so you can see photos of the site you pick.
This was our second experience with an Indiana state park, and like our first (Pokagon, in the winter) we were impressed with the clear marking of the hiking trails (and canoe trail for that matter) there was a map and guidepost at every junction.
There's a beach, concession stand and boat rentals on Sand lake, the Park's largest. Lastly, there's a fish cleaning shed with running water outside the campground entrance that anyone in the park can use, something I wish more parks would provide.

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Great for families and group camping

If you're traveling with kids or enjoy the community of being near your fellow campers this is a great option. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat this may be a bit loud and busy. However, the many amenities are a great way to find peace with the 9 lakes, 12 trails and a beach for swimming. The lakes and connecting channels are stunning for canoes and kayaks and there is a convenient rental area. This is a campground of convenience with a very well stocked campground store with reasonable prices right next to the entrance. There is firewood and ice for sale as well as staple cooking items and cute souvenirs. The campsites are spacious and have a picnic table and fire pit at each. This campground is a great way to stay close to the fun and other campers. With so many options there is a something for everyone! Safe travels happy campers 😄

    Twin Mills Camping Resort

    Beautiful Wooded Campground

Twin Mills is a really beautiful and quiet RV Campground, with tall trees in Northern Indiana. We frequent this location when getting RV Repairs and visiting Elkhart, the birth place of most RVs.

There are cabins and tent sites and a large lake access point with a beach area. The playgrounds seemed to be in good shape and the dumpsters were centrally located.

The park has a gate entrance for security.

There is a large pool area and basketball court.

There are several sections in the park, some more wooded and narrow sites, some are more spread out.

Cellular: T-Mobile had good signal strength and bandwidth, AT&T was not as good but still doable.

Most of the sites are full hook up, some have 30amp and some have 50amp.

Amenities: Pool Clubhouse Basketball Volleyball Picnic tables Fire rings Trash Playground Lake access Beach area Dock Cabins Tent sites

    Harrison Lake State Park Campground

    Nice park for Northwest Ohio

We rented a yurt as a local weekend escape. Our kids loved the yurt. It was nice with a little mini fridge and 4 double beds. Campground showers and bathrooms are clean. It is one of the only state parks in northwest Ohio, a beautiful little spot nestled in farmland of Ohio. The lake is nice for swimming and there are bike rentals which was fun as well. We did not use it, but there is a dog beach as well. Sites are crowed and close together.

    Lake Hudson Recreation Area

Beautiful Nature, Dark Sky Rustic Camping

Lake Hudson is a dark sky preserve full of trees, nature and a beautiful lake. The camping sites come with an electric plug in, a nice fire ring and a picnic table. They are cute sites. Most are not by the lake. There is a dumpster. The facilities are rustic. The facilities are port a potty type with wooden walls and cement floor. No showers. A hand pump well for water. The swimming part of the lake requires a drive. The Lake is beautiful with a sand beach, no wake boating and grills. However it is rustic so there is goose poo. The woods are beautiful. There is hunting. We had heard that some people partied there but the night we were there it was quiet and people were respectful. We had a beautiful fire and dutch oven dinner. We saw one cute racoon who ran away when I reacted. We were worried about mosquitos but we only saw one.

    W. J. Hayes State Park Campground

Great state park in the Irish Hills

Hayes State Park is a great little spot in the Irish Hills. It rained the whole time we were there (boo!) but we tried to make the best of it. Our site was the perfect spot for two tents and a hammock, and I loved the fire pit and table being next to the driveway. There’s electric at every site, and a paved driveway for RVs. One thing is that the sites in the east loop, while a little more spaced out than the west loop, are still real close together. If there had been someone in the spot to our left, it would’ve felt really cramped. The ranger office was nice, clean, and had lots of information ready! Firewood and ice are available there as well for reasonable prices. The bathroom building was right in the center of our loop, and had warm showers that were great after a day of cold mist. They aren’t the cleanest, but with how many people were there it was well kept and stocked. This is obviously a campground geared towards families, with tons to do from the beach, to volleyball courts and horseshoes. The main attraction is of course Wamplers Lake, and you can rent kayaks, pedal boats and canoes to go explore around the lake. Overall, this is a great campsite if you are a family, or attending an event at MIS right down the road. If you enjoy more secluded campsites, this isn’t the spot for you.

There's an inn, restaurant, cabins, boat rentals, horseback riding, bike trails, beach, toboggan run, etc," reports a camper who appreciated the diverse off-season offerings.

What campers like

Peaceful camping atmosphere: Many visitors praise the quiet environment at Lake Hudson Recreation Area. "The best part of this campground is the stars at night! This is a dark sky preserve campground and the stars are the show," writes one camper who visited during the Perseid meteor shower.

Family-friendly amenities: Gateway Park Campground receives consistent praise for its child-oriented facilities. A recent visitor detailed the offerings: "Pool 3ft-5ft, Air pillow, Large playground (very clean), Half basketball court, Sand Volleyball net, Rec room, Crafts on weekends, Corn hole boards, Horse shoe pits."

Clean facilities: Harrison Lake State Park maintains high standards for its amenities. One camper noted, "Nice family campgrounds sites are roomy, asphalt, and generally level. Restrooms and showers are clean and well maintained."

What you should know

Site selection considerations: At Harrison Lake, there are distinct camping areas with different advantages. "This is actually two different campgrounds -- North and South. The North Campground has larger sites spaced a bit apart to afford you some privacy. The grounds and facilities looked to be in good condition, too," explains a visitor who provides valuable context for cabin seekers.

Reservation timing: Most cabin accommodations require advance booking, especially during summer months. This is particularly true for Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday, where a camper noted, "We arrived late to find an envelope with our name on it with all of our info inside."

Utilities vary widely: Water access points and electrical options differ significantly between campgrounds. At Lake Hudson Recreation Area, "The only place to get water is a hand pump right when you enter the campground." Another visitor mentioned, "There is a yellow service phone at the headquarters to check-in."

Tips for camping with families

Accessible water activities: Many campgrounds feature lakes with kid-friendly swimming areas. At Harrison Lake State Park, one visitor reported, "The lake is nice for swimming and there are bike rentals which was fun as well. We did not use it, but there is a dog beach as well."

Entertainment options: Buck Lake Ranch offers unique historical attractions beyond standard camping amenities. A camper noted, "The little store was adorable, stage area with the names of all the performers is awesome, great musical history, friendly staff, beautiful lake and a fun beached whale to pose with."

Spacious sites for groups: Several campgrounds accommodate larger family gatherings with appropriately sized spaces. Harrison Lake features sites that can handle extended family setups, with one visitor noting, "It is very clean and quite. Nice size sites."

Tips from RVers

Road access considerations: Some campgrounds have specific access constraints for larger vehicles. For travel trailers and large RVs, Harrison Lake State Park offers accommodations but with limitations. A camper observed, "The South Campground has smaller sites that were much more closely packed together. There are non-electric sites that are a bit deeper but still quite narrow."

Hookup availability: Electrical connections are standard at most facilities, but water and sewer options vary significantly. Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday provides full-service sites as noted by one RVer: "Water, electric, sewer, cable TV all worked great. We will definitely stay here again in the spring."

Site surfaces: The type of pad at each campground affects leveling and setup. Gateway Park Campground features "Cement slabs with all the hook ups. Some lots have shade, most are not. All spots have picnic tables and fire pits by the road."
