    Jackson Lake Park

    Campground with Water Park

I stayed at this campground because they hosted a wedding I attended. I chose to stay in a cabin, which was pretty pricy for what it was. for $175, it was a basic cabin with a queen bed and 2 twin bunk-beds, a very small bathroom with a toilet and shower, and a small kitchenette with a microwave, sink, and mini-fridge. The cabin was somewhat dirty - dust on the floor and spider webs in the corner. It had no bed linens, or towels, and the bathroom didn't even have a mirror.

There is a "lake" (more of a large pond) on the property, with fishing, and large inflatables to play on in the summer. There is also a disc golf course. The nearby town Lithopolis is cute, with some local coffee and dining, as well as antique shops.

    Kabin 7 and Kabin 11

The KOA was what one expects of the KOA lots of features and not very secluded. The Kabins were lovely.

The design is nice as the bunk beds are in their own separate room. This means the back room will sleep four individuals. They also included little tables and benches so you can organize yourself in the room.  The front room has a large bed that sleeps two.  Then outside is the picnic table.  Due to health code rules you have to cook and do food outside of the cabin.

Our first cabin some of the light bulbs were dead and as a result they moved us to another cabin. Problem solved.

The bathrooms were very clean and the folks at the camp store were very helpful. I will say that my friend that took a shower was frustrated as one shower was scalding hot and the other was cold.  The floors were slippery as they didn't have a way to stop the water from going beyond the shower (no rim or lip).  She didn't get to use the Family Shower as you have to get the key from the store.  Shower time was usually before bed time with two little ones as they would get dirty playing during the day.  Since the camp store closes at 8 PM she would just use the standard shower with her kiddos. We thought this was a great feature and would have liked to get a look at the family shower set up.

At the camp store, they would drop off the wood via golf carts as you purchased it.  I was able to buy three bundles for $18.00 as it is cheaper that way.  I also purchased two bags of ice.

The cabin was fun and we were able to keep our trip simple by packing less due to the cabin.  Buckeye Lake State Park is close by and if you don't have a boat they really don't have a lot to offer non-boaters unlike other lake state parks.  We didn't see any trails.  We did go to the "beach" but opted not to swim. Our time was spent at the near by Dawes Arboretum and Newark's Earthworks (mounds).

**Will try to come back and upload more photos and videos later as tonight many of my posts are not fully uploading.

    Mohican Adventures Campground and Cabins

    Family Friendly

Great campground with lots to do! RV sites are a little small and close together, but comes with a picnic table and fire pit. There are back in and pull through RV spots - along with nice shady spots for rent camping. Cabins are also available. Great spot to camp if interested in tubing/canoeing/kayaking down Mohican river. When you arrive everyone in the vehicle checks in, and then someone on a golf cart takes you to your spot. Campground has an indoor pool and hot tub. Also has pond with paddle boards and paddle boats that need to be reserved at additional cost. Quite a few playgrounds available and mountain bike trails. Small creek runs along the campground. All guests are given a wrist band that gives you a discount at the Trails End restaurant and at Mohican Adventures across the street.

    Pops Place Camping

    Hidden gem in Ohio

I highly recommend pop's place.  I stayed there Aug 2024 and as of that date the rustic tent camping was $20.  This is an ideal base camp for riding your motorcycle on the scenic roads in that area of Ohio such as the triple nickel.  The owners are very nice people and helpful.  The porta john and shower were very clean.  The shower uses an on demand water heater.  The narrow cabin you see in some photos is now a gravel pad for RV type camping with electric.  The wider cabin in the photos is still there, but was currently rented so he couldn't take me on a tour of it.  He took me on a tour of the new cabin he is building and it will be a nice play to stay when he is done.  They sell firewood for $5.  The common grass area has wood lounge chairs, common fire ring, playground,  and cornhole boards.  If you are tent camping and need to charge your phone he has no problem with you using the electric outlet at the RV site if no one is there.  I forgot to suggest to him that maybe add an external electric outlet at the shower house since electric is there for the water heater.  There is a spigot on the outside of the shower house to get drinking water.  There is a basketball backboard near the current cabin if you happen to bring a basketball for your kids to use.  There is good verizon cell service there, I did not expect it because of the location and hills in the area.  I don't hammock camp, but it looked like there were trees far enough apart in the line of pines for hanging 2 hammocks.  One of the photos showed 3 picnic tables for tent campers.  There was only one when I stayed, but I assume it's a temporary or cyclical thing and I was the only tent camper and would have shared it anyway.

Of note for motorcyclists is that the road the campground is on is paved (good riding to the north of it) and the campground drive is decent gravel for street bikes.

    Mohican State Park Campground

    Winter Time But No Snow

We stayed on a full hook up site (turned off for the season) that had a nice concrete level pad. There was also a nice side pad that kept our chairs clean. A little further back in the campground to be close to the shower house that was open. Then found out that comfort station next to us was open - nice! Also close the water which was full and rushing all weekend.

The camp store was open on the weekend and the staff was nice to chat with. They had wood, but it was slab cut which doesn’t burn very well. We decided against it. Lots of snacks and other items still available.

Some sites were really close to the water, almost too close as the water flooded a few spots. The campground is nice to walk if you like to get in a little workout. They also have small camper cabins and them much bigger cabins which a few are pet friendly.

We went on a hike by the covered bridge to one of the waterfalls. Lots of trials to choose from.

    Hocking Hills State Park Campground

    Beautiful location and basic campground

We stayed in a Sherman cabin; it included two sets of bunk beds, a mini fridge, microwave and a/c. The pool was clean (tho' unheated) and showerhouses well-maintained. We were glad we stayed in the cabin because it rained heavily while we were there and many sites had standing water. The tent section is very hilly and you may need to be creative with your set-up. We loved the close location to fantastic hiking trails. Take your kids to the pencil sharpener museum while visiting Hocking Hills; it won't take long (it's only one room) and you can gather info at the visitors center next door while you're there.

Guide to Nashport

Dillon State Park offers cabin options ranging from rustic to deluxe across 2,285 acres of rolling terrain. Located near Nashport, Ohio, these accommodations sit at approximately 900 feet elevation in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Winter cabin camping near Nashport accommodates visitors year-round with heated options available during colder months when temperatures can drop below freezing.

What to do

Fishing at multiple stocked ponds: National Road Campground maintains two well-stocked fishing ponds that don't require a fishing license since they're on private property. "Clean and comfortable. There are plenty of things to do. The ponds are stocked with fish and because it is private land no fishing license is required," notes Terry F. at National Road Campground.

Family-friendly swimming: Many Nashport area campgrounds offer swimming options beyond the lake. LA-Z Acres Campground features a clean, maintained pool alongside their fishing pond. According to Angie S., "Really impressed. Owner took us to our site helped us get settled in and made sure we had everything we needed. Bathrooms clean pool was clean. Pond was great for fishing or just hanging out."

Winter hiking opportunities: Mohican State Park Campground maintains trails open year-round, offering different seasonal experiences than summer visitors might see. "Beautiful area to see in the winter & not as busy. You will mainly see people fishing for trout," notes Renée C. The park features a multi-mile through trail that follows the river from the dam to the camping areas.

Basketball and outdoor games: Wolfie's Campground provides recreational facilities including a half-court basketball court and cornhole games. As David describes, "A very well maintained camp. It's quiet sitting on top of a hill. Laundry and clean showers. Includes a pool, cornhole game, pool table and a nice pavilion."

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Unlike the tight spacing mentioned in some reviews, Alum Creek State Park Campground offers significantly more separation between campsites. "Space and Privacy...the two things that bring me back to this campground year after year. Each camping space is separated by trees and brush. And there is plenty of room!" reports Sandy O.

Quiet camping sections: Dillon State Park Campground offers specific areas for those seeking a more peaceful stay. John L. recommends, "Go to the back of the campground. It is very quite." This contrasts with the front sections that may experience more foot traffic and activity noise.

Heated, clean showers: Lazy River at Granville maintains quality bathroom facilities even during rainy weather. Amanda D. notes, "The bathrooms were really nice!!" This campground has received consistent positive feedback about its facility maintenance, making it popular for cabin campers who prefer clean shower options.

Wildlife viewing: Several campgrounds near Nashport offer opportunities to observe local wildlife. Andrea H. at Dillon State Park reports, "The bathrooms and showers are clean and the deer are plentiful and beautiful." This adds a natural dimension to the camping experience beyond the recreational activities.

What you should know

Seasonal closures and limitations: When considering cabin rental timing, be aware of seasonal changes. At Buckeye Lake-Columbus East KOA, the season runs from April 1 to October 31. For winter cabin camping, check which facilities remain operational. According to Andrea F. at Mohican State Park, "This particular park has potable water on by the dump station and the dump station is open. The water at the full hook up sites are turned off."

Tent leakage during heavy rain: Prepare for potential weather challenges with cabin alternatives if tent camping. Sherry M. reports her experience, "The rain was so heavy that our tent began to leak. We asked if they had any cabins available, and they did..." Having a backup plan during wet weather seasons is advisable.

Site leveling requirements: Some cabins and RV sites in the area require adjustment for comfort. As Gary O. notes about Dillon State Park, "Many sites are not level. Many sites have NO shade." When booking cabins or sites, inquire about the terrain if level ground is important to your setup.

Limited cell service: Communication might be restricted in some campgrounds. Andrea F. mentions about Mohican State Park, "No cell service with Verizon at this park." If staying connected is essential, verify service availability before booking or be prepared with alternative communication plans.

Tips for camping with families

Family shower access: Wolfie's Campground provides well-maintained bathroom facilities with larger shower stalls that accommodate parents with children. Jenny G. reports, "Bathhouse is very clean and tidy, with 2 large showers per bathhouse." This makes the morning and evening routines significantly easier for families with young children.

Age-appropriate activities: Consider the demographic mix at each campground during your planned stay. As Jenny G. observed, "It's a bummer for my kids (ages 15, 13, 9) that there don't seem to be any other kids here their age." Weekends and summer holidays typically bring more families to the campgrounds.

Evening entertainment options: Some campgrounds near Nashport offer night activities. National Road Campground visitors can enjoy stargazing. Stuart H. mentions, "We came in late as a passthrough spot, but the family activity potential is great. The sunrise was beautiful!" At LA-Z Acres, Scott E. notes the community aspect: "I guess one of the most awesome things is you become family with others in the campground and everyone looks out for each other."

Tips from RVers

Entrance access challenges: Wolfie's Campground has a potentially difficult access point for larger vehicles. Steve E. cautions, "The only challenge is you don't want to meet a rig going out while you're coming in. We are a 38 foot class A and met a 36' 5th wheel on the curve at the entrance. We literally passed with less than an inch between us..."

Potable water locations: During off-season camping, knowing where to find water is crucial. Andrea F. shares about Mohican State Park, "This particular park has potable water on by the dump station and the dump station is open. The water at the full hook up sites are turned off." Similar seasonal adaptations happen at most campgrounds in the area.

Actual pricing variances: Rob G. warns about Dillon State Park, "Actual price was a bit more than appeared on line…sorta annoying but we were happy with our stay." Budget-conscious campers should confirm final pricing when making reservations, as online listings may not include all fees or taxes.
