What to do
Fishing at multiple skill levels: Blue Rock State Park Campground offers stocked ponds where a fishing license isn't required on the private campground land. "Clean and comfortable. There are plenty of things to do. The ponds are stocked with fish and because it is private land no fishing license is required," notes Terry F.
Mountain biking trails: Alum Creek State Park Campground features dedicated mountain biking paths separate from hiking trails. According to Jill B., "There is reasonable space between the sites to allow for some privacy and to allow you to spread out. Plenty to do for everyone. There are some mountain bike trails."
Birdwatching in spring: Salt Fork State Park Campground is recognized as a significant birding hotspot during spring migration. "We drove to Salt Fork from North Carolina on our way to Maumee Bay State Park and the birding festival at Magee March. The park is a very good birding hotspot in the spring!" shares Brian M.
Winter backpacking: The area offers year-round camping opportunities with heated facilities at select locations. "We spent one night at the new site then left and stayed at a hotel for our third and final night of vacation because it was raining and torrents of water were flowing into our tent," warns Nicole F. about Blue Rock during rainy conditions.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Many campers appreciate the layout at Mohican State Park Campground, where sites offer more seclusion than typical Ohio state parks. "Well maintained campground with roomy camp sites. Nice heated pool and many activities in the area. Hiking, canoeing, biking, etc.," writes Wesley S.
Clean shower facilities: National Road Campground maintains well-kept bathroom facilities according to recent visitors. "My family and I were just passing through for the night, and the vibe was great. It was quiet, clean, easily accessible, and offered a wide range of amenities," reports Acacia C.
Campground events: Seasonal activities are regularly scheduled at LA-Z Acres Campground near Nashport. "The Owners are making major strides in not only making this a great place to go and stay for the weekend and all season. They have updated the electric, plumbing, the public bathrooms, the stage," explains Scott E.
Water activities beyond swimming: Burr Oak State Park Campground offers boat rentals for water exploration. "We camped at both Dock 3 and Dock 2 with our dog, those are the only two areas that allow pets. At Dock 3 we were right on the water but dock 2 is probably 200 yards from the water," describes Kelsey R.
What you should know
Site selection challenges: Campgrounds can have significant variation in site quality. At Dillon State Park Campground, Gary O. notes, "Many sites are not level. Many sites have NO shade. Only Electric available at each site. Shower/bathroom facilities look to be from the 70's."
Weather considerations: The region experiences significant seasonal changes that affect camping comfort. "We stayed 2 nights of Labor Day weekend and had a great time. It was very very hot outside and we sweated our butts off, so we were very thankful for the nice showers," shares Nicole C. about Burr Oak State Park.
Cell service limitations: Several campgrounds have limited connectivity. Andrea F. reports about Mohican State Park: "We spent one night at the new site then left and stayed at a hotel for our third and final night of vacation because it was raining and torrents of water were flowing into our tent. No cell service with Verizon at this park."
Water quality alerts: Blue Rock State Park sometimes posts swimming advisories. "The beach area had multiple notices about high bacteria content and warnings for swimming at your own risk (which we can understand this happens sometimes)," notes Nicole F.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly swimming options: National Road Campground offers water features beyond traditional swimming. "Nice place to stay! We enjoyed fishing as well as watching our child on the playground and splash pad!" reports Jordan N.
Nature programs for children: Several parks offer educational activities with naturalists. Ryan W. shares about Blue Rock State Park: "The activities with the naturalist (Cayden) were fun and engaging. The hiking was wonderful, the equestrian trails looked very nice, and the fire tower was a fun climb."
Multi-generational amenities: Buckeye Lake-Columbus East KOA designs cabins with family layouts in mind. "The design is nice as the bunk beds are in their own separate room. This means the back room will sleep four individuals. They also included little tables and benches so you can organize yourself in the room," details Kenpocentaur K.
Off-season glamping close to Nashport, Ohio: Burr Oak State Park offers winter accommodations in heated structures. "We actually stayed at the lodge and it was lovely. We would hike around during the day and swim inside as it was before spring. Lots of great trails. We hope to come back and back pack one of the trails," shares Kenpocentaur K.
Tips from RVers
Site levelness issues: Several campgrounds require significant leveling equipment. At National Road Campground, one RVer noted: "Pull-thru site #18 was very unleveled from front-to-back; hitch was on ground and rear stabilizers were fully extended with blocks underneath."
Utility hookup availability: Water and electric access varies widely between campgrounds and seasons. At Dillon State Park Campground, Brian B. advises: "All RV sites have 50A/30A electric. Limited sites have full hook-up. There is a dump station near the entrance. There is also a small camp store at the entrance."
Camping in non-peak seasons: Luxury glamping options near Nashport remain available in shoulder seasons. "We stayed here for two months (November and December). It is conveniently located near I-70. Only a few sites are open through the off-season months," explains Darla about National Road Campground.
Site reservation strategies: Many premium sites book far in advance, particularly at LA-Z Acres. "The facilities were nice. A lot of activities for the kids. The staff was nice. The staff did go over and beyond to accommodate us," reports Jessica P.
