    Maumee Bay State Park Campground

Clean, spacious, fairly private with lots of activity options

We've camped at Maumee Bay State Park twice and enjoyed it both times.  The campground is part of a larger resort complex that includes a hotel, marina, a nice beach on Lake Erie, a second beach on an inland lake, golf course, mowed hiking trails and - our favorite - about 5 miles of beautiful, paved bike paths.  It's all very clean and well maintained.  The whole place has a welcoming, friendly vibe.

We camped on site 47, electric only.  Very level and spacious paved spot with its own shade tree.  Nearby shower house accessible by well-lit paved path.  Our only problem was a bit of water puddling near the camper/fire pit but it went away after the first night.

The campground is spread out so everyone brings bicycles and also saw a few golf carts.  Very nice for family bicycling!  Saw lots of wildlife on our rides.

The surrounding area is kind of industrial.  We toured it the first year we went (very interesting!) but stayed close to camp this year.

    Lighthouse Point at Cedar Point

    Immaculate!

Absolutely beautiful RV park! Gorgeous views of Lake Erie and walking distance to the gate of Cedar Point. Beautiful landscaping and very clean. Staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Good little camp store with reasonable(ish) prices. Too chilly to swim but the pool looks nice. Bathhouses are updated, clean and very nice, but pretty far from about half of the sites. One section has premium sites with upgraded grills and fire pits and crazy good lake views. The regular sites are still well landscaped and each have a grill and an extra long picnic table, but no fire pit. You can bring your own fire pit if your site doesn't have one. No bikes or golf carts allowed on the grounds, but there are Cedar Point buses available day & night as well as rickshaws during the day. Until now I have held Disney World's Fort Wilderness as the penultimate place for camping but they could learn a few things from Cedar Point! We stayed five nights in a pull through sites, #231. I would love to snag a premium site for our next trip but it may be difficult because they allow you to book up five years in advance!

    East Harbor State Park Campground

    Love this place

A great campground in Ohio. So clean and so many things to do. Campsites are close together but they do honor quiet hours. Great trail around the lake and a fun and challenging disc golf course.

    Kelleys Island State Park Campground

    Best weekend camping

We will definitely be going back! Campground is on the lake and is beautiful! So many things to do! The camp is clean, has a playground, and movie night. Bath house is a typical campground bath house. We had a tent site and it was huge! Sites come with fire pit and picnic table. Beach is within walking distance of campsite.

    Camp Sandusky

    Very nice campgrounds!

There is so much structure and order to this campground! The grounds are laid out so nicely! One big circle with cross roads all along the way. You can camp however you'd like too! They have RV sites, tent sites and cabins. All mixed in together so you can travel with all your favorite campers. They do breakfast every morning in the front pavilion for $4.50 (all you can eat pancakes, 1 sausage and coffee) I haven't tried it yet, but its certainly popular. Laundry is open 24 hours a day and in an open area. Not the biggest fan of that due to needing to do laundry in the rain. Bathrooms are clean and standard. Row of toilet stalls and showers in a separate room. They have a stellar playground area, I don't have kids but even I was drawn to wanting to play on it. Very pet friendly around here. Close to downtown, near Cedar Point and all the other attractions over here. They have 2 pools, one being heated. We haven't had a bad rain storm while we're here but you can tell by the ground of our spot its going to be bad and super muddy. All in all this campground is pretty awesome.

    Sauder Village Campground

    Fun with Kids

This was a great campground. VERY clean, nice bathrooms with showers. Ice and Wood easily available. We stayed with four kiddos in a tent spot across from a cool plash pad, a little lake to fish in and close to running water. Only reason this campground doesn’t get five stars is because of noisy trucks/highway noise, and a freight train which drives often at night. There is also a farm near the tenting spots with a rooster. Not the best place for sleeping, but would totally go back!

    East Harbor State Park Campground

    Very nice campground

This campground is very large with lots of spots to choose from. The C portion has few trees, but if you choose a spot off one of the south circles, the sites are private. The bathhouse is very clean and well maintained. If you want quiet, it may not be for you because lots of families camp there. Quiet hours were, however, quiet! Trails are wide, grassy, and mowed, great for families who want to walk with children. WiFi is not strong, so don't plan on streaming a movie in the evening. There are plenty of things to do, though. My husband and I had a great time!

Guide to Bradner

Camping options around Bradner, Ohio sit at approximately 700 feet elevation in the gently rolling northwestern Ohio landscape. The regional climate produces warm, humid summers with temperatures averaging 80-85°F and mild winters with occasional lake effect snow from nearby Lake Erie. Most campgrounds in the area operate from April through October with limited year-round options.

What to do

Birding at Maumee Bay State Park: Located about 35 miles north of Bradner, this park offers extensive birding opportunities along its boardwalk wetlands trail. "One of my favorite things about this campground is that your spots are close together which is great for safety, however with the bushes and brush, it feels super private. My grandparents were in the site next to me in their camper and I had to walk a ways to see their spot," noted Kayla H., who also mentioned the excellent bike paths available.

Boating access at South Bass Island State Park: This island park provides boat ramps and water access. "The Park has a rocky beach (shoes NECESSARY) which is actually a nice swimming area if you aren't looking for sand under your feet or blanket. That beach is a great area though to launch a kayak or sailboard to use in the cove," reports Stephen S., who details the practical aspects of visiting this unique glamping destination near Bradner.

Exploring glacial features at Kelleys Island State Park: The island contains the world's largest accessible glacial grooves. "Amazing small town feel with cute shops, family activities, world's largest glacier groves, shallow beach and fun history," according to Daniel U., who has visited the island throughout his life and considers it his favorite park.

What campers like

Private, well-maintained sites: Many glamping accommodations near Bradner feature strategic natural barriers. At Maumee Bay State Park, "All sites are very generous in size and appear to be spaced with a decent amount of space apart with foliage providing varying levels of privacy. Some have beautiful trees that in peak fall color would be stunning," according to Lee D., who stayed twice and found both experiences enjoyable.

Quality facilities and amenities at East Harbor State Park: Located on Lake Erie, this park maintains clean facilities. "Very nice campground, it's large so if you're walking around, remember to take a map. The campground is right on the shore of Lake Erie, there are a few restaurants nearby," notes Michi P., highlighting the mix of full hookup and standard electric sites available.

Star viewing opportunities: Island camping locations provide exceptional night sky viewing. At Kelleys Island State Park, one reviewer explains, "No city lights and being in the middle of the lake means lots of stars, the sounds of water and being so dark you can barely see." The location's remoteness from light pollution creates ideal conditions for astronomy enthusiasts.

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Lake Erie's climate affects nearby camping experiences. According to Kayla at Maumee Bay, "My only tip would be to bring plenty of bug spray in the summer, there are lots of bugs that come off the lake. Also make sure you bring jackets and blankets, even in the summer it can get pretty cool in the evening."

Island logistics at South Bass Island: Transportation planning is essential when glamping on Lake Erie islands. "The slow ferry to the island (Miller) is the car ferry and it has free parking if you can leave your vehicle behind on the mainland... If you do take your vehicle over note that the wait time to bring it back on a Sunday while usually 2 to 3 hours can also be up to 6 hours," advises Stephen S.

Bathroom and shower limitations: Some smaller parks have limited facilities. At Van Buren State Park, a reviewer notes, "They were clean but I don't think I'd want to do more than a weekend there. It had a nice playground for kids and plenty of trails to hike or go horseback riding." Van Buren also lacks shower facilities, which may influence length-of-stay decisions.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: When selecting a glamping site with children, prioritize recreation amenities. At Van Buren State Park, Brendan V. mentions, "If you can get a good middle spot it's nice if you have kids since there's a playground, swings, basketball, and tether court." These amenities provide entertainment options during downtime at camp.

Beach safety considerations: Lake Erie beaches vary in condition and safety. At Kelleys Island, a parent mentions, "While the campground does allow pets, they are restricted to specific sites and can use only one of the swimming beaches." Sarah H. also notes that the beaches, trails and biking opportunities "kept our family busy over our three night tent stay."

Educational opportunities: Several parks offer interpretive programs for children. At Maumee Bay, a camper mentions, "Many trails, some grassy and some paved are good for walking, running, and biking. A beautiful and extensive boardwalk constructed by the Ohio Civilian Conservation Corps is available only for foot traffic." The nature center and bird habitats provide additional learning experiences.

Tips from RVers

Leveling challenges: Many Ohio campgrounds require equipment for leveling. Mark S. from East Harbor State Park advises, "The key is site selection at East Harbor...The flattest RV sites with fair to good locations are Sites 57 and 44 (although even these will require a little leveling)." This specific guidance helps RVers select appropriate glamping sites.

Water and electric access at Crystal Rock Campground: Located near Sandusky, this campground offers full service sites. "We enjoyed our stay & would go again!" reports Stacey S., who appreciated the "bright, clean facilities" and "hot showers" available at this glamping destination 45 minutes from Bradner.

Dump station availability: Planning for waste management is essential. At South Bass Island, a reviewer notes, "The Park has a dump station for larger boats or jet skis. NO overnight boat tie ups at this state park dock." This information helps RV owners plan their glamping stay effectively with appropriate utility connections.
