Cell phone coverage varies significantly across the mountainous terrain, with stronger signals typically available at parks closer to Interstate 77 and Highway 52. Midway Campground Resort

    Family-Friendly

This is a small, family-friendly campground. There is a pond for fishing, a nice pool, a jump pad, playground, arcade, and mini-golf. Plenty for kids to do. The best feature is a haunted trail at Halloween (this gets very busy so be aware if you plan to camp around this time of year). Sites are not necessarily level and big rigs might have a hard time navigating the campground, but folks are friendly and it's a nice place to spend a few days. They do offer long-term sites if you need to stay in the area for a while.

Doughton Park Campground — Blue Ridge Parkway

    Quiet Mountain Campground

On the Blue Ridge Parkway, nestled in the trees and mountains of North Carolina, this campground has been well maintained. Sites are ample but the asphalt pads were designed for shorter travel trailers, but include an extra pad for the tow vehicle. Many of the sites have upgraded concrete pads for the picnic table and built-in fire pits. There are no showers in the trailer (RV) loop, but does include a couple comfort station with flush toilets. Campground hosts were helpful and friendly. Sites are split between first come first serve and reservations. Payment at kiosk by credit card only.

    Mayberry Campground

    Big Rig Friendly

This campground is probably 90% big rigs. It’s a huge campground with 2 lakes, playground, RV store and shelter houses. There is only one shower house with one shower and two toilets on each side. Pet friendly on leash. Close to Mount Airy for those over 60 who want a trip down Memory Lane.

    Ararat River Campground

    Wonderful owners

The new owners have revamped this campground. From what I’ve heard, this wasn’t the place to go prior to the ownership change. The owners here care about everyone at the campground, and keep it nice and clean. They also expect their full time campers to keep their lots and campers in good condition. Both owners are very approachable and respectful. Campground is just a short hike to the Ararat River. Which is why the new name is Ararat River Campground. No tent camping, but 30 amp and 50 amp camper hookups are available with sewage. In the warm months the owner holds church services in the pavilion behind lot 12. Owners offer a flat monthly rate that includes water, electric, wifi, and campground maintenance.

Doughton Park Campground — Blue Ridge Parkway

    Great, quiet campground

Doughton Park CG: (Scale 1- bad, 5-Very good (70 yr olds in 17’ trailer) Overall Rating: 4.5 Price: $10/ night w senior pass Usage during visit: low due to rain Site Privacy: some, like ours - #9, are very good Site Spacing: some sites are nicely space and some are pretty close. Site surface: Blacktop Reservations: Yes Campground Noise: Very quiet during our stay. A small group of folks, older, play music together on a regular basis. Bring your instrument and join them. One plays a lot of Gordon Lightfoot - they were friends. Low key and quiet. Very, very enjoyable.
Road Noise: Sites 1 and 2 are close to the parkway. The rest of the sites are set far enough back that, maybe motorcycles can be heard. Right now through there is no through traffic as a nearby portion of the parkway is in the middle of a 3 year construction project. Through Traffic in campground: None Electricity: No Water: Availability at the dump station and one faucet.
Sewer Hook up: No Dump Station: Yes Generators: Allowed Bathroom: Small and clean. Showers: No Pull Throughs: Most or all are back in.
Cell Service (Verizon): Good from our site Setting: Deciduous forest on high ground. Weather: Unseasonably wet during our stay. 4 days of almost non-stop rain
Bugs: None Solar: Fixed solar panels might work in sites 1 and 2. Host: Present. Rig size: There are a couple 30 to 35’ rigs here Sites: #9, our site, is one of the best sites we have had in almost 4 years of travel. The regulars call this site the “honeymoon site”, because of the heart shaped large rocks which create a lower terraced picnic area. Best sites: 9 very best, 4, 8, 7. Next best: 5,21,19. Nice but picnic area is not quite as private: 20, 18,16,14,12,11,10. All other sites along the outer side of the loop I would be happy with. The exception are sites 1 and 2. These two sites are along the parkway.

    Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground

Small Family Owned CG on the Blue Ridge Parkway

The campground is so convenient to the BRP! The owners are friendly and easy to talk to. The campground is clean, scenic, and hilly.  We had no issue navigating with our 27' trailer.  We saw several class A's and a large 5th wheel here too.  All RV sites are on gravel and level. Sites are full hookup with 20, 30, and 50 amp receptacles available  Firewood is available.   We used the 2-washer laundry (not coin-op $5 wash and dry paid at office) with no issues.  Yesterday we drove to nearby Mt. Airy (Mayberry) and enjoyed the Andy Griffith Museum.  We would definitely stay here again.

    Greystone RV Park

    Amazing view of Pilot Mountain

Highly Recommended! We had the opportunity for an extended stay at Greystone in 2024 and had an exceptional experience. This is one of the best campgrounds we've found in all of our RV travels. The owners and camp host are some of the finest people you can meet and you can tell they really care about their customers. If you're looking for a small, quiet campground that checks all of the boxes then this is the one. And the unobstructed view of Pilot Mountain is the icing on the cake. If you can stay a night with Greystone, you will not be disappointed! We stayed in site 10 (end site) and it perfect for our 25 ft travel trailer. The gated campground has ten FHU sites for self contained RVs ( no pop ups or tents allowed), all sites have wifi and open sky for starlink, campground bathhouse and laundry are five stars. Camp host sells firewood for campfires.

    Beechnut Family Campground

    Great Campground-Great Owners

We spent 4 nights here this past week. Very clean, quiet, and relaxing campground. The owner Todd was super nice and very helpful. Great WiFi service. We were in site 43 right on the pond. Full hookups. Very good Verizon coverage. Ok ATT coverage. A mix of short and long term campsites, but everything is well maintained. We will definitely stay here again.

    Fairy Stone State Park Campground

CCC Cabin - Couple's Weekend Away!

MY husband and I stayed two nights in a 1 bed efficiency CCC Cabin at Fairy Stone State Park for a short weekend away from the kids. We visited in December so it was pretty cold weather but the cabin was so cozy and comfortable! We loved having the fireplace! The cabins have a bathroom, shower, kitchen with sink, fridge, oven/stove, microwave, toaster, everything you need! They have heating and a/c as well. The cabin was built in the 1930s and is so charming! Loved everytihg about our experience here.

There is no cell service or internet/wifi at the cabins though so come prepared with something to do! We found it to be very relaxing to unplug!

What to do

Trail access from campgrounds: At Fries New RiverTrail RV Park, campers can connect directly to the 58-mile New River Trail. "Catch the head of the 58 mile trail just 2 blocks from the RV site. We rode the first 6 miles (and back) of the New River Trail to the train trestle and through the tunnel, just beyond. Easy ride with 2% grade," notes Jennifer K. The trail follows the New River with multiple access points.

Fishing opportunities: Several campgrounds offer pond fishing with no license required on private property. At Forest Lake RV Resort, guests report good catches even with minimal experience. As one visitor mentioned, "fishing pond (I caught 2 sunfishes in 30 min & I'm no fisherman)." Bring basic tackle and bait, available at camp stores.

Local wine tasting: The Yadkin Valley wine region surrounds Pinnacle with over 30 vineyards within driving distance. Campers at Riverwalk RV Park note the convenient location. "The Yadkin Valley is wine country so if you want to go wine tasting there are many vineyards in the area," shares Ricky J. Most wineries open daily from 11am to 5pm with tastings ranging from $8-15 per person.

What campers like

Mountain views: Many visitors choose Greystone RV Park specifically for its panoramic vistas. "10 flat, paved spots on the top of hillside looking up at Pilot Mt. You're right next to your neighbors, but was a great spot for a stopover. You're staying for the view and easy access to hiking, not much else," explains Greg H. The unobstructed view creates popular sunset watching spots across the campground.

Small, quiet atmosphere: Some rv campgrounds near Pinnacle, North Carolina maintain limited site numbers to preserve a peaceful environment. Jennifer K. appreciates that Fries New RiverTrail RV Park is "small, less than 20 sites - but each site is beautifully landscaped and maintained." The smaller campgrounds often fill quickly during peak seasons.

Cleanliness standards: Campers frequently comment on well-maintained facilities at Pinnacle area RV parks. "Beautiful small campground and everything is done top notch! Prettiest bath house I've ever seen! Pull thru sites with concrete pads. No leveling needed," reports Nan L. about Greystone RV Park. Several campgrounds employ full-time maintenance staff.

What you should know

Reservation policies vary widely: Some rv campgrounds Pinnacle, North Carolina require advance booking while others operate first-come systems. At Cobble Hill RV Campground, "owners have been very accommodating with putting us all together" for large group bookings according to Sandy M., but this isn't universal across all facilities.

Seasonal amenities: Many campgrounds adjust their facilities based on time of year. One camper at Forest Lake RV Resort noted, "Unfortunately a lot of the activity type things (arcade, mini-golf, horseshoes, etc.) weren't available because we visited in the off season. Bummer but to be expected even though we had super nice weather."

Noise considerations: Some parks enforce quiet hours while others host regular events. A visitor to Lake Myers RV Resort reported, "We've been for 2 nights in a row (so far) and both nights were very noisy because of two concerts." Check event calendars when booking if seeking tranquility.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Several RV parks near Pinnacle offer dedicated children's amenities. Gennie C. recommends Lake Myers RV Resort: "Many activities offered for family with 2 large pools etc." However, age appropriateness matters, as another visitor noted: "There was not much at all for them to do other than play in the pool... There is a play ground and game room for older kids but nothing for the smaller children to do."

Swimming options: Many campgrounds feature pools or water access with varying rules. At Lake Myers RV Resort, "2 swimming pools, camp store, snack bar, fishing pond" provide water-based recreation according to Joel M. Some facilities close pools seasonally or restrict hours.

Entertainment schedules: Family-oriented campgrounds often program activities throughout the week. Brooke S. described her experience: "We were only there Fri-Sun but there were activities planned to include an outdoor movie (with free popcorn), arts & crafts for the kids, candy bar bingo, and a DJ." Check activity calendars when booking.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Many campgrounds around Pinnacle feature varying terrain. At Black Dog Acres RV Park, sites include "Super easy pull thru sites with concrete pads. No leveling needed. Couldn't be easier to pull in and set up," according to Drew W. Other parks require more setup effort with blocks and jacks.

Water pressure variations: RVers report significant differences in water systems between parks. At Fries New RiverTrail RV Park, one camper found that "Being at the end of the water line for the park, our pressure wasn't great so we used our fresh water tank and water pump for showers and to wash dishes but the pressure was adequate for making coffee, brushing our teeth and filling the water bowls for the dogs."

Road access considerations: Some RV parks near Pinnacle require navigating narrow roads. Joy B. cautions about Lake Myers RV Resort: "This is a decent family-friendly campground but is quite difficult to navigate the roads and sites if you have a larger rig." Campgrounds closer to highways typically offer easier access for larger motorhomes.
