Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Oak Island, NC

Holden Beach RV Campground accommodates pets across all camping types including tent sites, RV hookups, and glamping options. Brunswick Beaches RV Resort similarly welcomes pets with 114 campsites featuring full hookups, picnic tables, and designated fire rings. Most campgrounds in the Oak Island area require pets to remain leashed when outside RVs or tents, with Carolina Beach State Park and Fort Fisher Air Force Recreation Area enforcing strict on-leash policies for visitor safety. Campgrounds typically provide basic pet amenities including waste disposal stations and designated walking areas, though actual dog parks are limited. Sites offer varying levels of privacy between neighboring campers, with Holden Beach RV featuring some landscaping between sites providing modest separation for pets and owners. The campground's dog park provides a secure space for pets to exercise off-leash.

Most pet-friendly campgrounds in the area maintain well-maintained bathroom facilities with showers, making longer stays with pets more comfortable. Holden Beach RV Campground sits approximately 5 minutes from beach access, allowing campers to enjoy coastal activities with pets where permitted. The Supply/Holden Beach area offers several veterinary services within a short drive of campgrounds. Campers should note that summer temperatures can be challenging for pets, necessitating adequate shade and water. Limited tree cover at some campgrounds, particularly Oak Island Campground which functions essentially as a parking lot with hookups, provides minimal natural shade for dogs during hot months. Multiple reviewers note the clean, well-maintained facilities at Holden Beach RV Campground, which consistently receives high ratings for its pet-friendly environment and helpful staff who assist with everything from site selection to backing in vehicles.

    Oak Island Campground

    Decent owners

This is literally a grass lot across the bridge from oak island. While they met our needs (water, electric, sewer) the space they put us in was very tight. A little on the high side price wise. We were traveling with an f350 and a 36 ft bumper pull. You can’t fit both in the space allotted. Rules were not very clear (check in / check out) but since they weren’t clear and we were in need of either leaving early and hoping we can get on the road or letting our toddler take his mid day nap, they agreed and let us stay while he slept. Thankful they let us - even though no one came or went the longevity of our stay. All in all if you just want a place to park a camper, this will work. if you’re looking for a little more for your beach trip, don’t waste your time.

    Oak Island Campground

Great for RV camping, not for Tents

Oak Island is absolutely beautiful! It's close proximity to the ocean and magical trees covered in Spanish moss made up for the lackluster camping experience. This campground really shouldn't even offer tent sites. It's basically a gravel parking lot filled with a mix of RV's and tents. I was in a tent and ended up leaving after one night.

North Myrtle Beach RV Resort and Dry Dock Marina

Great Amenities - Quiet off season

We camped here in our 34 travel trailer. We both work from home on hot spots and our Verizon connection was great.

The place is VERY quiet in the off season. We didn’t have any neighbors in the surrounding spots.

The pool area looks super nice, but it was a little to chilly for us to spend any time in the pool. The hot tub however was a great way to end our work days! There are plenty of showers and two laundry rooms. Both are very nice and clean. There’s a small arcade which was fun too.

Check in was super easy. We were very late and they accommodated us. The staff is polite and friendly.

The site is great. Concrete pad makes for super quick and easy leveling set up. There’s a fire pit and picnic table. The spots next to us are “premium” so they have a little pavilion over their table.

The dog park is small and definitely geared towards smaller dogs. It has a cute agility type course set up. Our GSD felt a little to big for the dog park, but we made it work.

    Holden Beach RV Campground

    Everything we need

This place has everything we need. Decent size sites, water, 30Amp, sewer, great WiFi (repeaters positioned at every other site, especially in the new section). There is also a playground, dog park, camp store, nearby grocery and other stores, etc. spent 5 nights, Sun - Thu night and really enjoyed it. Some monthly campers around who were friendly and helpful. We were a 5 minute drive to the beach and not far from other sites that we were looking to visit. The staff was also very nice and helpful. We were led to our site and the guide made sure we were OK and would have stayed had we needed help. Will do this again when visiting that area.

Here We Go to Daddy Joe’s

We were delighted to find beautiful scenery, friendly staff and a comfortable campsite that included a picnic table and fire pit. Daddy Joe’s is an awesome place to bring the kiddos. A splash park, mini golf, swimming pools and the park has activities throughout the year. It’s dog friendly with two dog parks and plenty of places to walk and run!

    Brunswick Beaches RV Resort

Ideal shaded sites, close to beaches, fishing, and good food.

This is a relaxing, natural campground. Many bird songs at sunrise and Whip poor will calls at sunset every night. We have dogs and there are nice places to walk along the pond, and grass areas all around the campground. The dog park is nice for some off leash time. The facilities are great with a store, laundry, and clean restrooms and showers. A very nice pool is available, but with Sunset beach, and Ocean Isle beach just minutes away we have gone there daily. I am fascinated by Bird Island that is a nature preserve and reachable from Sunset beach, this is a day trip we are looking forward to taking the dogs on. Calabash is another town we have visited and it is a gem. We didn’t expect to want anything but seafood but the Peruvian restaurants’ line out the door was intriguing and we ended up there for a late lunch and loved it. My partner is an avid fisherman and had a great day fishing on a Hurricane charter out of Calabash.

Guide to Oak Island

The Brunswick County area offers several pet-friendly camping options within a short drive of Oak Island's beaches. This coastal region has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot, humid summers. Summer temperatures typically range from 70-90°F, while winter temperatures average between 40-60°F, creating extended camping seasons for travelers with pets.

What to do

Beach activities with pets: At Carolina Beach State Park Campground, campers are close to beaches while enjoying natural surroundings. "There are lots of short trails to hike on where you can enjoy bird watching and viewing the Venus flytraps and other carnivorous plants native to the area. There is also a marina which offers a public boat ramp," notes Caroline G.

Four-wheel driving with pets: For more adventurous pet owners, Freeman Park offers beach driving and camping options. "You can drive onto the beach - it makes it SO easy!!!" explains Kimberly S. The park requires appropriate vehicles and planning around tides when bringing pets.

Off-season pet camping: Winter camping with pets offers quieter experiences. "I've been here at different times of the year. I really enjoy camping here in December and January. Less people and the park is so nice," reports Ms P. about Carolina Beach State Park. Many pet owners find shoulder seasons offer better weather conditions for animals.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: While the existing description mentions limited site separation, Brunswick Beaches RV Resort offers more spacious options. "Sites are level and not too close to one another," observes Joy B. The resort's 114 sites feature varying layouts, with some providing better pet accommodation.

Clean facilities for extended stays: Pet owners appreciate well-maintained facilities. "The bath house is always clean and stocked even in the winter. The bathhouse is also heated during the winter months and there are quite a few outlets available which we used to charge our phones," says Caroline G. about Carolina Beach State Park.

Proximity to pet beaches: Waterway Campground offers unique waterfront options. "This is a great one to stay at if you are with a boat, or if you like to fish. Parked right next to the water, the views are nice, and i can go stick my feet in the channel from the little bank areas," notes Marie G., making this suitable for pets who enjoy water activities.

What you should know

Tent limitations: Not all pet-friendly sites accommodate tent campers equally. "Oak Island is absolutely beautiful! Its close proximity to the ocean and magical trees covered in Spanish moss made up for the lackluster camping experience. This campground really shouldn't even offer tent sites. It's basically a gravel parking lot filled with a mix of RV's and tents," warns Angel G.

Beach driving requirements: When taking pets to Freeman Park, proper preparation is essential. "First and foremost, make sure you know how to drive in the sand and what to do when your car gets stuck. It happened to us, as well as to many vehicles on the beach," cautions Katy S.

Seasonal crowds with pets: Pet owners should plan around peak seasons. "During busy times you have to apply for or get a permit. They charge just to drive on the beach to cut down on traffic. It's very hot and busy during the summer but if you go in spring, fall or warm winter days it's absolutely amazing," advises Kelley E.

Tips for camping with families

Pet-friendly playgrounds: Wilmington KOA offers pet-friendly spaces alongside family activities. "The playground was awesome and included a cool wooden pirate ship. The grandkids loved it!" shares Bridget H. This campground balances pet needs with family entertainment.

Educational opportunities with pets: Carolina Beach State Park offers learning experiences alongside pet-friendly trails. "There are lots of short trails to hike on where you can enjoy bird watching and viewing the Venus flytraps and other carnivorous plants native to the area," notes Caroline G.

Beach access logistics: Managing pets while accessing beaches requires planning. Terry H. describes Holden Beach RV Campground as having "staff [that] is very friendly and helpful" when navigating pet rules and access points. Many families appreciate staff assistance with pet management during beach outings.

Tips from RVers

Level sites for rigs: In The Pines RV & Cabin Village provides well-maintained grounds for RVers with pets. "New Park with all the amenities you need, clean well kept facilities and grounds. Dog Park and nice mowed lanes for walks," reports Kristie B.

Beach transportation options: Some campgrounds offer convenient transportation for pet owners. Taissa K. mentions Holden Beach RV Campground has "a free trolly takes you to the beach and some restaurants." This feature helps pet owners manage transportation without moving their rigs.

Electrical reliability: During hot weather, pets need reliable climate control in RVs. Brunswick Beaches RV Resort camper Lewis M. reports, "All sights are flat, very level. Grass and fire rings at every sight. Table with plenty of room." The stable electrical service supports air conditioning needs during summer months.
