    Carolina Beach State Park Campground

    Love Carolina Beach State Park!

Our family has tent camped here twice and recently reserved a camp cabin for a week this summer. This is a quiet and spacious campground mere miles from Carolina Beach at a price that's hard to beat. We tent camp here around $30 a night for a tent site. Each site is very large and spacious. It could could comfortably fit 2 tents and a car.

This Campground offers bathhouses, picnic tables, and fire rings. Dogs allowed, but not in the cabins. Plenty of walking trails.

Campground is flat and shaded, although there are some primative group sites away from the main campground but they don't have as much shade. Grocery store is maybe 6 miles away.

    Carolina Beach State Park Campground

    beach + camping = awesome

Carolina beach state park is one of my favorite places to go in North Carolina. Not only does it have an awesome campground, but it's right near one of the best beaches I've ever been to. The sites are nice and secluded, just how I like them. Most of the sites are tent sites, but they have a few full hookup sites for RVs and some cabins to rent too. All of the sites have picnic tables, fire rings, and drinking water.

Within the park, there are tons of hiking trails through a really beautiful area. I hear the fishing is also really good within the park, but I've never done it myself. The only downside is you can't swim within the park, because the currents can get dangerous. The beach is only like 5 minutes away though, so not really a big deal.

As for the beach, it's my favorite one to go to in the states. I like it because it's not really touristy like the outer banks or myrtle beach. Not a whole lot of people come to it, so it's always pretty secluded and clean. In July, the water temperature is perfect, the waves are nice, and it's great all around.

    Awesome spot in NC.

    Myrtle Beach KOA

    Rustic Cabin Check in delay

We just visited the Myrtle Beach KOA and stayed in one of their rustic camping cabins. First the good — The staff we dealt with were pleasant and helpful. The campground was generally clean and there was a reasonable amount of space between the sites. Now the bad — we arrived at 4:30pm to check in and found that the camp store closed at 4:00pm - everyday. For those who forgot something or needed to pick up some ice or other necessity, you would have to leave the campground to get it. Second; upon arrival (4:30) we were told that none of the rustic cabins were ready and to come back in an hour. Not a great way to be welcomed. Next, the shower/bath house appeared clean but there was a distinct smell that made it feel like it might not have been that clean. Finally, the KOA is right downtown, so there is a good deal of noise from outside the campground. Lots of sirens, fireworks, and engine noise from US 17(Business). Final analysis: We really don’t like Myrtle Beach (too much of a tourist trap) and we probably wouldn’t come back. We were only there because I had some work to do in the area and needed a less expensive place to stay.

CarrollWoods RV Park at Grapefull Sisters Vineyard

    Actually 4.8 Stars

Spent the week before Memorial Day and Memorial Weekend at Carrollwoods. This is really a nice campground. The sites are well-spaced with a picnic table, fire pit and grill at each site. There’s a pool that was unfortunately out of service during most of our visit there during the 90-degree heat. It was finally open when the weather cooled. There were not many other campers until the weekend and then there were only a few sites left. The grounds are very spacious. Lots of room to walk with a few short paths that go into the woods. It has one of the best dog parks that I have ever been to. It is very spacious, fully shaded by lots of trees and even has a few man-made hills for the pooches to climb. The only downside was it appeared as if the waste bin hadn’t been empty in several days. I visited the winery and the two women who own it are helpful and lively. If you visit, you must get one of their wine floats. My only negatives were they advertise free WiFi and cable. I wish businesses would not promote poor quality products as “free”. I probably could access their WiFi no more than for 3 times in all the time I was there and would last no more than 10 minutes. The cable had several odd channels and there was so much buffering, it was often unwatchable. My only other issue is that they need to do some cleanup in their gardens. There were several planters with dead plants in them from the year before. Either refill them or get rid of them. The beds are well designed, but needed a good weeding. Even with its flaws, this is definitely a campground I would return to.

    Brunswick Beaches RV Resort

5 miles from Kindred Spirit Mailbox

I came to this campground because of its location about 5 miles from Kindred Spirit Mailbox on Bird Island.

The campground was quiet. All the guests were quiet, but friendly.

Water and electric hook-up, laundry on site, showers and toilets behind the camp store office. Great cement picnic tables/benches!

Not close enough to beach unless you have a car or bikes. Parking lot near beach is $10. Pool clean; ice and firewood on premises for sale.

Dump station near entrance/exit. Road into camp is incredibly narrow. 2 vehicles can’t fit; one has to pull over to the side to let another pass by.

This campground used to be a KOA but now it is a Good Sam camp. The road is still named KOA. Address is 7200 KOA Drive, Sunset Beach, NC 28468 (910)579-7562.

    Myrtle Beach KOA

    Nice stopover

We only stayed here one night as we were traveling to points south. It was February, so not packed full, but a fair amount of “winter camping” enthusiasts in the park. Typical of a KOA, sites are rather closely packed. It’s very nicely wooded for the most part and there are a variety of options to be had, including camping cabins. There are also luxury rv sites that have cement pads with patios, grills and patio furniture along with full hookups. We happened to be there after a period of heavy rain and there were large puddles and some sites partially flooded, so there might be some drainage issues. The bathhouse was acceptable, not really new, basic but clean with lots of hot water. A few blocks from the beach, but they have a shuttle (in-season) and golf carts to rent. I imagine it’s a very busy place during peak season. Friendly check-in with a helpful escort to the site. Camp store, laundry, games and play areas for kids also available.

    Willow Tree RV Resort

    Amazing vacation

Best RV Resort we’ve been to so far. Large lots with nice long pull through, clean and quiet with a friendly staff. Amenities included nice swimming pool and hot tub. Volleyball net and basketball hoop on each end of pool. Shuffleboard, corn hole, sand volleyball. Game room had a pool table, ping pong table, air hockey. Books galore to borrow, DVDs if you have a player which we don’t, but we don’t camp to watch TV. Store had a puzzle you could spend time working on and a checkerboard with rocking chairs to just hang out in. The lake beach was closed for the season when we went but the inflatables looked like they would have been fun! Mile long paved path around the lake was great for walking or biking. Catch and release fishing too. Had a mix of annuals, short term campers and on the other side of the lake they had nice cabins and a small park model village. Exercise room and a nice clean laundry room. Bath house was 8 individual doors to full individual bathrooms of toilet sink and shower which were kept very clean. Cherry Grove beach was only 15 minutes or so away and there was a Food Lion less than 10 minutes for grocery shopping needs. Resort store had reasonable prices for ice and wood to burn in the fire pit. Only negatives which weren’t a big deal was nothing can be strapped to trees... aka no laundry line or hammock attached to the trees and no tents allowed. We will go back! Wish it was closer to home.

Guide to Oak Island

Cabin accommodations near Oak Island, North Carolina range from rustic to luxury options within a short drive of area beaches. Most rental cabins are situated within established campgrounds, providing access to shared amenities like swimming pools, trails, and camp stores. Winter cabin camping offers lower rates and less crowding, though some water-based amenities may be closed during cooler months.

What to do

Beach access options: At Carolina Beach State Park Campground, visitors can enjoy both camping and beach activities. "You can drive onto the beach - it makes it SO easy!!!" notes Kimberly S. The park combines natural settings with beach proximity as Daniel P. explains: "Excellent facilities and only a drive to the beach. Cool marina near check-in area too."

Hiking trails: Nature enthusiasts staying in cabins near Oak Island can explore multiple trail systems. "Within the park, there are tons of hiking trails through a really beautiful area. I hear the fishing is also really good within the park," shares Sam M. about Carolina Beach State Park. Trails are well-maintained year-round, making them accessible during all seasons.

Water recreation: Cabin guests at Brunswick Beaches RV Resort can enjoy both indoor and outdoor water activities. "This is a relaxing, natural campground. Many bird songs at sunrise and Whip poor will calls at sunset every night," describes Maya C. The resort provides easy access to fishing opportunities, with one visitor noting: "My partner is an avid fisherman and had a great day fishing on a Hurricane charter out of Calabash."

What campers like

Winter camping comfort: Many cabin visitors appreciate off-season stays near Oak Island. "I've been here at different times of the year. I really enjoy camping here in December and January. Less people and the park is so nice," shares Ms P. about Carolina Beach State Park. Most cabins maintain comfortable temperatures year-round with heating systems.

Cleanliness standards: Cabin renters consistently praise the maintenance at local facilities. "Had a wonderful time. The people are amazing there. Campsites were great and the price was the best around. Great showers and clean campgrounds," notes Amanda S. The attention to detail extends to both cabin interiors and common areas.

Nature experiences: Staying in cabins provides direct access to wildlife viewing. According to Maya C. at Brunswick Beaches RV Resort, "We have dogs and there are nice places to walk along the pond, and grass areas all around the campground. The dog park is nice for some off leash time." Birding opportunities are abundant in the area, with several species visible directly from cabin porches.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Oak Island area cabins require advance booking, especially during peak seasons. According to Steven C., "From checking in until packing up to leave, my three night stay was very pleasant and restful. I disperse camp usually, but having the advantage of a very well maintained bathhouse was super nice." Most facilities require deposits ranging from 50% to full payment.

Pet policies: Rules regarding pets vary significantly between cabin rental locations. At In The Pines RV & Cabin Village, Kristie B. notes, "Dog Park and nice mowed lanes for walks. Owner super nice and helpful." Some properties restrict pets entirely, while others require additional deposits ranging from $20-50.

Seasonal considerations: Weather patterns affect cabin availability and pricing throughout the year. Frankie M. explains, "Love visiting this park. The rangers do such a great job with the sites! And the location is awesomeness. Tons to do! I try to get back as often as possible!" Hurricane season (June-November) may impact travel plans, with some cabins closing during severe weather warnings.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Families should prioritize cabins with dedicated children's facilities. "The campsites at this park are some of the cleanest sites I have camped at. We never see any trash on the ground or out on the trails," explains Caroline G. Most family-oriented cabins include small refrigerators and microwaves for meal preparation.

Beach alternatives: When ocean conditions aren't ideal, look for cabin rentals with pools. At Wilmington KOA, "The pool was big and warm, easy for swimming while maintaining social distancing," notes The School for Y. Many cabin communities also feature splash pads for younger children.

Educational opportunities: Cabin stays offer learning experiences for children. "There lots of short trails to hike on where you can enjoy bird watching and viewing the Venus flytraps and other carnivorous plants native to the area," describes one visitor. Ranger-led programs at state park cabins include interactive wildlife demonstrations during summer months.

Tips from RVers

Cabin upgrades for RVers: Many RV travelers occasionally rent cabins as a change of pace. At Myrtle Beach KOA, "They have luxury rv sites that have cement pads with patios, grills and patio furniture along with full hookups," explains Cyndi B. These upgraded cabin sites often cost 20-30% more than standard RV spaces but provide additional comfort.

Convenience factors: RVers appreciate cabin locations with easy access to supplies. "The park is very clean the showers are hot and the pressure is good," notes Robert T. about Wilmington KOA. "The campground is convenient to downtown Wilmington and a short drive to Wrightsville Beach. Plenty of shopping and other entertainment nearby if the weather doesn't cooperate."

Size considerations: When transitioning from RV to cabin camping, space requirements differ significantly. According to Luke M., "My wife worked from the road while I taught school. The WiFi was strong and the employees were helpful and informative." Most cabins near Oak Island offer less storage than RVs but provide better temperature control during extreme weather conditions.
