Campgrounds around Laurinburg, North Carolina provide a mix of developed facilities and natural settings within driving distance of the city. The area features several established campgrounds including Lumber River State Park's Chalk Banks Access for tent camping and Pine Lake RV Resort offering cabin and RV accommodations. Most sites in the region are situated within a 30-mile radius of Laurinburg, with options ranging from full-hookup RV parks to more rustic tent camping areas. Nearby state parks and private campgrounds offer varying levels of amenities, from primitive sites to developed facilities with electric hookups, water access, and modern bathhouses.

Road conditions and accessibility vary throughout the region, with most developed campgrounds featuring paved or well-maintained gravel roads suitable for RVs and passenger vehicles. Permits or reservations are required at many established campgrounds, especially during peak seasons from late spring through early fall. As one visitor noted, "The campground is peaceful with walking trails and an outside pool for recreation. Pull through lots available with nice lot size so you aren't parked right on top of each other." Weather considerations include hot, humid summers and mild winters, making camping possible year-round at many locations. Several campgrounds in the region operate seasonally, particularly those with swimming facilities which typically close after Labor Day.

Campers report high satisfaction with sites offering water features or wooded settings. Cheraw State Park Campground, approximately 30 miles west of Laurinburg, receives strong reviews for its lakeside location and diverse accommodation options including tent sites, RV hookups, cabins, and glamping facilities. Several visitors mention the importance of securing reservations during peak seasons, particularly at more popular destinations. A camper described one nearby option as "a very nice KOA Journey conveniently located right off of I95. The staff is pleasant, the campsites are a decent size and well kept, the campground overall is clean and nice." Mixed-use campgrounds that accommodate both tent and RV camping are common in the area, with many facilities offering amenities like swimming pools, fishing ponds, playgrounds, and walking trails to enhance the camping experience.

      Smith Lake Army RV Park

      Tidy, very well designed, basic

It’s not scenic or particularly private, but it’s clean, well designed, and pumping out shore power to combat the Iowa humidity

      LumberJack RV Park

      Top Notch RV Park

You cannot go wrong staying here! Great prices and excellent service!! We arrived right before dark, my husband turned off the truck and when he went to start it again, it would not start. The starter had went out in his truck, and we were still hooked to the camper, partially blocking the road in the RV park. The owners did not have a problem with our truck staying in the road through the night, and they were so helpful, and even took my husband to the auto parts store at 7:30 the next morning to get a new starter. Along with the owners, others staying in this campground was super friendly, and offering their help. This is our second stay in this RV park, and definitely won't be our last!

Anderson Creek County Park- Dispersed Camping

      Dispersed Camping? Not yet.

I got pretty excited when I saw this listed as offering dispersed campsites as my daughter lives nearby, and the only camping near her is Raven Rock, and for whatever odd reason, when you camp at NC state campgrounds, you have to be in the campground for the night at 9PM in peak season, and 6PM in off season, or you will be locked out! Unfortunately, at this phase of development, Anderson Creek County Park only offers ONE group campsite. Hopefully they will offer dispersed camping as they develop further, they are doing so in phases.

      Parkton Place

The Farm Feel on 30 acres

Car camping in my Subaru with a pop up tent just in case for two nights. This place is beautiful and relaxing. Called the owner to check in and ask questions. Heather was very brief and helpful. The animals are friendly. Just make sure to close the gates behind you and keep coffee away from the animals. If you’re an introvert this may be the place for you. If you into socializing go explore and talk to the animals and other people camping if they are interested in talking. It feels like home already.

      Double L Farms Campground

      Lumberton NC

Our host, Brain and Lisa are great. Brain was there when we arrived to make sure we had everything we needed for hook up and helped with parking. Lisa gave very good directions to their location. Very peaceful, loved the animals. Will stay here again.

Pedro's Campground at South of the Border

      Great Stop!

This well known roadside attraction, South of the Border, has a hidden gem of a campground! They have a lot of sites, from back-ins to pull-throughs, full hook-ups, nightly rates from about $49 including tax (with discounts, and they offer a few). Nice sites with picnic tables and grills, we saw three bathhouses (clean!), and a coin-operated laundry. Entire campground is gated with security, and there are restaurants, shops, and gas stations. Quiet, fun, just off I-95 at the SC/NC border.

      Spacious Skies Sandy Run

      Great Campground for a Stopover

While this is a Spacious Skies Campground with all of the SS stuff (playground, bounce pad, pool, dog run, etc) it doesn't quite have the SS vibe.  Felt a little more like a long term campground.  There are 55 sites. While we were there, I counted 38 campers that I'm almost sure were long term and 5 that seemed short term like us.  The only thing that put me off about this though was a couple of sites seem to keep their dogs mostly outside in dog fences.

The campground is appropriately named (Sandy Run) because is it mostly sand.  There is at least a half mile sand road to get back to the campground.  All of the roads in it are sand, though you can tell the base is gravel.  The campsites themselves are mostly sand, with thick gravel to park on, nice concrete pads with picnic tables to sit at and a fire ring at each site.  There was a very nice short hiking trail that went around a small lake.

All of the staff was super friendly and helpful.  The campground and sites are clean and well maintained.  The bath and laundry house are also clean.

We had the only non-FHU site, so I had to use the dump station, which was easy access and well maintained.

The campground is close to I95 with easy access, but far enough away that you can't hear the highway noise.  It is right next to the Fayetteville airport, but being a regional, it is not very busy.

Bottom line, I would definitely stay here again, but we have family in the area.

      Uwharrie National Forest

      Peaceful Stay by the River

Peaceful and well-maintained area. I encountered a few people on the trail, which was reassuring without disrupting the solitude. I camped near the river and had a great experience. As a person of color, I felt safe at all times, including during brief interactions with other campers.

    Guide to Laurinburg

The camping spots near Laurinburg, North Carolina lie within the Sandhills ecological region characterized by sandy soil and longleaf pine forests. Most campgrounds in this area sit at elevations between 200-300 feet above sea level, with temperatures averaging 90°F in summer months and 50°F in winter. Primitive camping areas often require vehicles with higher clearance due to unpaved access roads.

    What to do

Kayaking on Lumber River: Access the river directly from Chalk Banks — Lumber River State Park where the boat ramp provides easy launching. The current flows at a gentle pace suitable for beginners. "Easy parking nice boat ramp for the kayaks," notes one camper who visited during Memorial Day weekend.

Wildlife observation: Bird species native to the Sandhills region include red-cockaded woodpeckers and pine warblers. The open fields and forest edges create ideal conditions for spotting deer at dawn and dusk. At Cheraw State Park, campers observe a variety of waterfowl near the lakeside. "Bird sanctuary so birders will LOVE this campground," states a visitor.

ATV trails: Sandy soil conditions create perfect terrain for off-road vehicles at Outback ATV Park. The park features over 50 miles of marked trails through varied terrain. "So many trails you'll never ride the same one twice. Swimming hole is nice and spring fed," reports a regular visitor who considers this their preferred destination.

    What campers like

Spacious tent sites: The tent areas at Lumber River State Park provide uncommon privacy compared to most established campgrounds. Sites 9-11 are set far back in the woods. "Tent sites are some of the better spread out ones that I've seen and having cell coverage is immensely appreciated considering you're basically in the middle of nowhere," explains one camper.

Farm camping experience: Double L Farms Campground offers camping surrounded by working farm animals including horses, chickens, and cows. The 46-acre property provides ample space for exploration. "The animals come to say hi. The kids loved our stay," shares a family who stopped overnight while traveling on I-95.

Quiet weekday camping: Most campgrounds in the region report low occupancy Sunday through Thursday except during hunting season. This creates opportunities for last-minute bookings. At Lumber River State Park, "With talking to the rangers, they were saying that the place seldom gets too crowded, and you can almost always get a reservation here."

    What you should know

Gate hours: Several campgrounds lock entrance gates after evening hours. At Lumber River State Park, the gate closes at 9pm and reopens at 8am. "The maintenance man was surprised to see me roll out of there when he arrived in the morning to open the gate. He was very apologetic and gave us the code in case we needed out in the middle of the night."

Limited facilities: Many camping areas provide only basic amenities. Sandhills Campground B has no bathrooms, water sources, or camp store. "This is a campground located in the Sandhills Gamelands in NC. If you're looking for primitive, this is it. No bathrooms, no water spigots, no camp store, nothing like that. Bring all your own EVERYTHING."

Seasonal considerations: Summer heat in this region regularly exceeds 90°F with high humidity from June through September. Tent campers should prioritize shaded sites. At Cheraw State Park Campground, "We stayed in the camp juniper group area this time, but have camped in the regular campground in the past. The regular sites are usually full, and very close, but the lake front sites are gorgeous and worth being close to neighbors."

    Tips for camping with families

Animal interactions: Children often enjoy the opportunity to see farm animals at close range. At Double L Farms, the owners allow supervised interaction with horses and other livestock. "If you have a family with small children, they will love the horses, chickens, guinea hens, and the couple of friendly cats and dogs that they own."

Swimming options: Pedro's Campground at South of the Border lacks a swimming pool, but Cheraw State Park offers a designated swimming area at the lake. "A cute little beach area with kayak and canoe rentals. Day area open from 8am to sunset," notes a visitor who gave the park a five-star rating.

Educational opportunities: Several campgrounds offer nature programs on weekends during summer months. Exploration Station in Lumberton provides rainy day activities within a 30-minute drive of most area campgrounds. One camper traveling with children mentioned, "For the kiddos, if you need to get away and see something a bit more educational then try out Exploration Station in downtown Lumberton."

    Tips from RVers

Access considerations: RV sites at Pine Lake RV Resort require navigating narrow entrance roads. Larger units may have difficulty maneuvering. "The road to is dirt with sand mix, they good a good job of keeping it graded. The only down sides are that the sites are pretty packed close together, some trailers seem run down and abandoned."

Highway noise levels: Lumberton I-95 KOA sits adjacent to the interstate, creating consistent background noise. Front row sites experience the most disruption. "To get to it, you get off the highway and loop around about 1-2 miles, but you cross back over I95 and it is situated right next to it, so there is a lot of road noise. Not a great place to several nights if you are looking to hang out outside of your RV."

Utility reliability: Power outages occasionally affect campgrounds in rural areas during summer thunderstorms. Having backup power options for essential medical equipment is recommended. Multiple campers report consistent, reliable hookups at most established campgrounds. "Compared to other KOA locations I've stayed at along different interstates, I would definitely mark this as one of the more unique and special properties."
