Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Emerald Isle, NC

Cedar Point Campground accommodates pets at all 15 sites in the Croatan National Forest while maintaining strict leash requirements throughout the grounds. Dogs must be kept on leashes no longer than 6 feet at all times on the property. The bath facility building remains clean with individual locking shower rooms providing total privacy and security. Emerald Isle RV Resort, located directly on the beach, also welcomes pets with designated pet exercise areas away from camping spots. The campground keeps sites grassy and well-maintained with plenty of space between neighboring campers. Most pet-friendly accommodations near Emerald Isle offer electric hookups, fire rings, and picnic tables, though specific pet amenities are limited.

The Goose Creek Campground trail system connects directly to several dog-friendly hiking paths with water access points suitable for dogs who enjoy swimming. Pets should be supervised closely around waterfront areas as local wildlife, including shore birds and small mammals, are active in coastal regions. Owners must bring sufficient water supplies as water hookups are inconsistent across campgrounds, with Cedar Point requiring campers to fill freshwater tanks upon arrival rather than providing individual site connections. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F, requiring extra consideration for pet hydration and shade access. The closest emergency veterinary service operates in Jacksonville, approximately 25 minutes from most Emerald Isle camping locations, with standard hours until 8pm weekdays.

    Cedar Point Campground

Great Location in the Croatan National Forest!

We loved our stay here! It is a well run campground and the area is so convenient! Plenty of hiking trails, boat access and woods all right here in this park. The boat access and pier are just a brief walk away from the campground. I wouldn't say the sites are secluded but you will definitely have more privacy on the outer edge of the campground. Definitely worth a shot and super convenient to Morehead City, Swansboro, Emerald Isle, etc.

    Cedar Point Campground

Use to one of our favorite

We like camping here in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. Emerald Isle is close by and plenty of place to eat and things to do. The trails are nice and usually the place is clean. On this trip, the restroom was dirty and had no TP. There was NO hot water for the showers and NO heat in the restroom. We stayed for three days and restrooms were not cleaned. Paper towels on the floor and the trash can was never empty.

Croatan Puddle - National Forest Dispersed - Pringle Road

Free NF Site - Half-hour from the beach

Not a bad site for a couple of days. Close to the beach in the Pocosin Wilderness and free. We stayed here beginning of April while checking out Emerald Isle and Carteret. The national forest roads in this area have a few other sites that where closer to the road. This one is a little more secluded and the big puddle is from people driving through a small creek. Lots of birds in the area but we didn't see any other wildlife.

    Emerald Isle RV Resort

    Family fun at the beach

Love this little campground. Emerald Isle is a favorite vacation spot for my family and when we aren't renting a house, this campground is a great alternative. It's clean, close to the beach, has a little pool and they do fun family activities, too (like outdoor movies and Christmas in July!). I really like how small it is...feels more like a campground community than a huge resort. They have a little playground and some shade trees. There are some permanent trailers, as well.

    Emerald Isle RV Resort

Great Month-Long Stay in the Off-Season

I stayed at Emerald Isle RV Park for a full month right after Labor Day and really enjoyed the experience. It’s clear this is a busy, touristy spot during the summer, but in the shoulder season it was quiet and relaxing, mostly just the permanent sites around.

The campground has full hookups and is very well kept. The shower houses, laundry, and common areas were spotless solid 4 out of 5 stars for facilities. The only real downside was the Wi-Fi. it’s pretty slow (under 2 Mbps) and gets worse on weekends. It actually gave me a good excuse to finally buy a Starlink, which worked great here.

Overall, I’d definitely come back for a summer stay. The location can’t be beat you are minutes from the beach, bars, restaurants, and grocery stores. Great spot if you want to camp near the coast without being right in the chaos.

    Whispering Pines Campground

    Nice Campground

Nice campground well-kept pool, and laundry facility. The playground closed due to COVID but has a dog park and fishing ponds with bass. The biggest downfall to this facility is that the nice campsites are only reserved for seasonal or year-round campers. Anyone there for days - weeks stay get a full-sun site which some can be pretty small ours was a decent size. It's also overrun by feral cats so if you're allergic, bring meds. They offer cable, and you can pay for WiFi.

    Cedar Point Campground

    Christmas Week at Cedar Point

We could not have Christmas with our kids, so we went camping. Where? To our new favorite campground, of course!

Back to CP. We were in site 11 on this trip and we reserved it because it is close to the bath house.

The campground has only had about 12-15 campers in it this week. We love the quietness and the wind in the trees. It turned off really cold....I MEAN REALLY COLD, so I have spent a LOT of time inside the camper.

Here are some of our favorite things from this trip:

    • Clam Chowder (yes, buy the BIG ONE) from Swansboro Food & Beverage in Swansboro

    • Lazzara’s Pizza on Emerald Isle has some AMAZING thin crust pizza (save yourself and don’t settle for Michangelo’s pizza.... not even close to the deliciousness of Lazzara’s)

I did a silent video that show several sites and how big and well kept they are. I showed the end of the nice bath house and captured a few scattered campers and a brave tent camper......brrrrrrr too cold.

    Cedar Point Campground

Campground near Estuaries and the Beach--a Photographer's Dream

My wife and I stayed at this campground many years ago, and when I came this time, the changes were mind blowing. The first time, it was rustic with high grass, a dirt entry road, and most campers were in tents. This time, the landscaping was well manicured, there were paved roads throughout, and most campers were in RVs. Wow!!!! What an upgrade! However, I had a tent and I felt out of place. I guess I was expecting a campground more like federal campgrounds I have been to in the past where there is more privacy and space between the campsites. With that said, the tent was on grass and there were no hookups. Essentially, it was a grassy, level place to pitch a tent. The one redeeming factor was that it was close to the bath house. The facilities were fairly new. For example, the bath house looked as if it had been built recently, and the concrete looked fresh. Inside, there are individual showers separate from the toilets. Both are modern and something I am not used to seeing except at privately owned campgrounds. The main attraction here is the Cedar Point Tideland Trail which takes you through the estuaries close to the ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. This area is a photographer’s dream, especially if you like photographing the native habitat and creatures. I was able to get photos of birds, soft shell crabs, and closeup photos of dragonflies. The estuary itself is worth taking pictures of, especially at sunset. Another attraction is its proximity to Emerald Isle and the ocean, which is about two to three miles away. If you are a kayaker like I am, or a boater, there is access to the White Oak River by way of a boat launch. Personally, I had rather be in a more remote wilderness type area, but I understand that some people love this type of closeness to their neighbors and the modern facilities. Don’t get me wrong. All you have to do is drive a few hundred yards, and you will be in a wilderness type area(the Tideland Trail). Overall, this is a great little campground for RVs(and tents if you spend most of your time exploring the Tideland Trail and surrounding areas), and I highly recommend it… IF you can get a spot. All of the sites are by reservation only except for five first come/first serve spots.

Guide to Emerald Isle

Croatan National Forest campgrounds provide several pet-friendly options near Emerald Isle with varying levels of amenities. Most dog-friendly sites enforce a strict leash policy on all trails and common areas. Summer temperatures along the coast regularly reach 90°F during July and August, requiring campers to plan accordingly with adequate hydration for both themselves and their pets.

What to do

Water access points: Croatan National Forest Oyster Point Campground offers direct water access for fishing and paddling. "Beautiful water ways open for canoeing and kayaking. The camp spots are a little close together but being right off the water is worth it," notes Natalie B., who recommends the area for kayaking enthusiasts.

Hiking opportunities: The Cedar Point Tideland Trail connects to several estuary viewing areas with wildlife observation opportunities. "This area is a photographer's dream, especially if you like photographing the native habitat and creatures. I was able to get photos of birds, soft shell crabs, and closeup photos of dragonflies," explains Myron C. about the environmental diversity.

Beach exploration: Hammocks Beach Bear Island Campsites requires ferry access but rewards visitors with pristine beaches. "Love this park. Bear Island is only accessible by boat. So you have to pay a small fee for the ferry ride that takes you to Bear Island. Or you can canoe or kayak," explains Katie M., noting the transportation logistics required.

What campers like

Spacious tent pads: Oyster Point Campground provides well-maintained tent areas with proper spacing between sites. "Camp sites are clean and cared for. They have nice tent pads done up. would be nice if some of them had two tent pads for a second tent but ground was nice and level," explains Ronica H. regarding the setup.

Private shower facilities: The bathhouse facilities at many National Forest campgrounds offer individual locking shower rooms. "The bathhouse could use a little TLC. The bathrooms were functional but not very clean. The showers are separate from the bathroom and half were out of order on this stay," reports Steve V. about the Cedar Point facilities during peak season.

Affordability: Several dog-friendly campgrounds near Emerald Isle maintain reasonable pricing compared to beachfront options. "At only $10 per night, the price is unbeatable for the area. Spot #15 puts you right by the water's edge, which makes for a beautiful morning view," shares Alexandria F. about the value at Oyster Point.

What you should know

Limited amenities: Most forest campgrounds offer basic facilities without full hookups. "Primitive campground with no frills. Dirt road in and gravel on site drives. Water spigots spread out between the campsites. Vaulted toilets were clean," explains Jody B. about the Oyster Point Campground setup.

Heat considerations: Summer camping requires preparation for high temperatures, especially in exposed campsites. "Lots of sun throughout the day until late evening, so a little miserable on this stay as the area had heat advisories every day," warns Steve V. about summer conditions at Cedar Point.

Reservation requirements: Most sites now require advance booking rather than first-come availability. "All of the sites are by reservation only except for five first come/first serve spots," notes Myron C., pointing out the limited flexibility for spontaneous trips.

Tips for camping with families

Swimming access: Goose Creek Campground provides facilities specifically designed for families with children. "The pool is amazing! The slide is so fun! It has 3ft all the way to 6ft roped off sections in the pool!" recommends Caralee B. about the swimming options.

Ferry logistics: When camping with children at Bear Island, plan carefully for transportation logistics. "It takes planning to go with kids but it's totally doable. We had a 2 and 9 year old and they did great. We plan on returning next year," shares Lauren about managing island camping with younger children.

Shell collecting: Beach access points provide educational opportunities for children. "Get up EARLY for shelling, as professional shelters get there early to find good specimens," advises Kent F. for families looking to collect beach treasures at Hammocks Beach.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Most campgrounds near Emerald Isle feature prepared pads requiring minimal adjustment. "All sites are paved; minimal leveling required. Lots of trees and shade -- plenty of room for the hamock and screenhouse," notes Rick S. about the Cedar Point Campground RV accommodations.

Hookup availability: Water access varies significantly between campgrounds. "The sites do not have water hook ups so make sure your RV fresh water tanks are topped off, or there are plenty of potable water points throughout the campground to fill up you jugs," advises a reviewer about Cedar Point's setup.

Connectivity considerations: Signal strength varies across the region. "I stayed at Emerald Isle RV Resort for a full month right after Labor Day. The only real downside was the Wi-Fi. it's pretty slow (under 2 Mbps) and gets worse on weekends," reports Darren L. about internet reliability.
