    Whipoorwill Campground

    Welcoming / Outdoors

Owners that we spoke with to reserve our area and take care of us was just the southern hospitality you always hear about. Super nice and welcoming and always has a smile on their face. The owners live on the property in the house, which I thought was awesome in case we needed anything. Everyone else that either drives by or lives by us always waving and stopping for conversations, just as polite as can be.

Was told this land is approximately 400 acres of wooded and fielded areas housing multiple horses and horse pastures. They have a horse arena here that holds events weekly. Love the horse atmosphere and watching them do their thing from day to day. Plenty of paths and areas to walk around and stretch your legs, along side multiple ponds with catch and release only fishing. Well off the main road as well so you hardly hear any traffic.

The whole place is so very clean: the bathrooms, camping areas, swimming pool area, even the dumpsters area. The grass is very well kept, the roads and signage, well maintained.

What to do

Trail riding opportunities: Visitors at Whipoorwill Campground can explore extensive riding paths across the 400-acre property. The campground provides multiple horse pastures and walking routes for riders of various skill levels. "Plenty of paths and areas to walk around and stretch your legs, along side multiple ponds with catch and release only fishing," notes camper Mathew G.

Attend horse events: Weekly equestrian events at the horse arena serve as a central activity for visitors. Local competitions and demonstrations occur regularly, allowing campers to observe or participate depending on event rules and registration requirements.

Fishing access: Many equestrian campgrounds near Emerald Isle include water features for alternative recreation. Multiple ponds with catch-and-release fishing provide supplemental activities when not riding. These fishing areas typically require no additional permits beyond standard campground fees.

What campers like

Maintenance standards: White Oak Shores Camping & RV Resort receives consistent praise for cleanliness across all facilities. "The whole place is so very clean: the bathrooms, camping areas, swimming pool area, even the dumpsters area. The grass is very well kept, the roads and signage, well maintained," reports Huggins G.

Local hospitality: Campground staff and owners maintain traditional Southern hospitality standards. On-site ownership creates responsive service for equestrian needs. Campers report positive interactions with both staff and neighboring campers, creating a welcoming atmosphere for those traveling with horses.

Quiet location: Horse campgrounds near Emerald Isle are typically positioned away from major roadways, providing reduced traffic noise that benefits both campers and horses. This strategic placement allows for a more natural environment while maintaining accessibility for horse trailers and RVs.

What you should know

Accommodation options: Most equestrian campgrounds in the area offer varied staying options including tent sites, RV hookups, and cabin rentals. Facilities generally include water and electric connections, with some providing full sewer hookups for extended stays.

Horse facility limitations: While these properties cater to equestrians, dedicated horse corrals may not be available at all locations. Campers should confirm specific equine accommodations when making reservations, particularly regarding temporary containment options for horses.

Reservation requirements: Advanced booking is recommended, especially during spring and fall seasons when weather conditions are most favorable for riding. Weekend availability becomes limited during special events or competitions at the horse arenas.

Tips for camping with families

Safety protocols: Establish clear rules for children around horse areas. Designated viewing areas allow for safe observation of equine activities without direct interaction. Staff can provide guidance on appropriate distances and behavior around the animals.

Alternative activities: When not engaged with horses, families have access to traditional camping recreation. Swimming pools, fishing ponds, and hiking trails provide diversions for all family members. Some campgrounds offer scheduled activities during summer months for younger visitors.

Educational opportunities: Horse-focused campgrounds create natural learning environments about equine care and behavior. Children can observe daily routines including feeding, grooming, and exercise regimens. Some locations may offer informal educational sessions during slower periods.

Tips from RVers

Access considerations: RV campers should confirm turn radius requirements and pad dimensions when booking at equestrian campgrounds. Some locations have limited large rig access, particularly in older sections of the facilities.

Hookup availability: Water, electric, and sewer connections vary between sites. Full-hookup options exist but may be limited in number. Reservation staff can typically match RV specifications to appropriate sites when provided with accurate vehicle dimensions.

Seasonal planning: Spring and fall provide optimal camping conditions for RVers with horses, offering moderate temperatures that benefit both travelers and animals. Summer humidity levels can be challenging, while winter camping remains available but with reduced services at some locations.
