Four Mile Creek State Park and Daisy Barn Campground are located along Lake Ontario north of Wilson, New York. The region sits at approximately 300 feet above sea level with flat terrain extending to limestone shoreline cliffs. Summer temperatures average 75-80°F during peak camping season from June through August, with cooler lakeside temperatures often 5-10 degrees below inland readings.
What to do
Niagara Falls visit: Located about 20 minutes from Four Mile Creek State Park Campground, the Falls offer a convenient day trip. "About 30 minutes from Niagara Falls. Staff inside office were very friendly-gave many trail suggestions and good tips for navigating the city. Comes with state park parking pass to park free and access to town shuttle," reports Evan.
Fort Niagara exploration: Just 5 minutes from camping areas, this historic fort provides educational tours. "Fort Niagara is about 5 minutes away, the falls are 15-20 minutes away, and there are many farm stands and cute little towns nearby," notes Jen V. from Medina Wildwood Lake KOA.
Lakeside recreation: Lake Ontario access provides fishing, boating, and shoreline walks. At Golden Hill State Park Campground, visitors enjoy "a Frisbee gulf course, basketball court, fishing, boat launch available. I do recommend bringing your own gear," according to Jay B.
What campers like
Bathroom facilities: Most campgrounds maintain clean restrooms with hot showers. "The bathrooms in the 200 loop with bathrooms and showers are up-to-date and SUPER CLEAN," notes Paula about Four Mile Creek State Park.
Toronto skyline views: Clear days offer Canadian city views across Lake Ontario. At Daisy Barn Campground, "This was a beautiful campground right on Lake Ontario. You could even see Toronto from the shore," according to Jennifer N.
Level sites: Many campgrounds offer well-maintained camping pads. "Electrical hook up, worked great for our RV. Water and dump site available on grounds," reports Evan about Four Mile Creek, while Krista F. describes Niagara Falls North / Lewiston KOA as having "Simple, cute, scenic campground. Gravel sites. Easy pull through sites."
Family-friendly amenities: Multiple pools and recreational activities keep children engaged. "Lots of activities at this park, staff is friendly, clean pools, facilities, zip line, boat rentals, spacious sites, and minutes from the falls!" shares Keri about Branches of Niagara Campground.
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: Most campgrounds operate from May through October with limited availability outside these dates. "This isn't the biggest or fanciest place but it's simple and wonderful for a weekend getaway," notes Laura Nicole A. about Four Mile Creek.
Site privacy variations: Campground loops offer different levels of seclusion. "We camped at site 161 which was fairly shaded and had a large open field with a view of Lake Ontario. Sunsets were beautiful and a lot of campers come to the lake in the evening to watch it," reports Stacia R.
Campground layouts: Some facilities have distinct areas for different camping styles. At HTR Niagara Campground, "This was the most perfect family campground we've been to. The staff is very nice and they're always outside working and helping. The back sites were perfect and decent sized," according to L W.
Reservation requirements: Advance booking is essential during summer months. "Due to COVID, advance reservations are required to book a spot at any NY state campground," explains Leah L. about Golden Hill State Park, though this practice continues at many locations.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Several campgrounds feature updated play equipment. "There are several bath houses with laundry located throughout the CG, and some are a bit more updated than others. The camping loop roads were nicely paved and great for bike-riding," shares Jen V.
Kid-friendly activities: Organized events keep children engaged throughout their stay. At Niagara Shores Campground, "This camp used to be a Christian camp and is under new ownership and renovations. The owners have a huge project before them. The bathrooms are immaculate," reports Amy C.
Swimming options: Pools and water features provide cooling recreation during hot days. "The perk we were not aware of was free parking at one of the three New Yark park parking lots with our campground pass. Showers clean and warm. Staff helpful and friendly," mentions SkipperAllen C. about Four Mile Creek.
Tips from RVers
Electric service quality: Power fluctuations affect some campgrounds. "Comes with state park parking pass to park free and access to town shuttle. Electrical hook up, worked great for our RV. Water and dump site available on grounds," reports Evan about Four Mile Creek.
Site access: Larger RVs require specific campgrounds with appropriate infrastructure. "Sites are easy access, rock bed for the sites, you are escorted to site. Easy access to local attractions, including Niagara Falls," explains Kirk S. about Niagara Falls/Grand Island KOA Holiday.
Maneuverability considerations: Some campgrounds have limited turning room for large rigs. "The campground is very small. Some sites are a little bigger than others but most are quite small," cautions Karen P. about Niagara Falls North/Lewiston KOA.
