Several RV parks within 30 miles of St. James accommodate various motorhome sizes. Cathedral Pines County Park offers electric hookups and water connections on sites that accommodate most RV lengths, though not necessarily big rigs. Smith Point County Park provides full hookup RV sites with 50-amp service, water, and sewer connections, along with sanitary dump stations for overnight guests. Heckscher State Park Campground features electric sites with 30 and 50-amp hookups, operating seasonally from May through September. North Fork Cottages & RV Resort in Greenport has big-rig friendly sites with full hookups, though the season runs only May through November. "We have a 42 ft 5th wheel toy hauler. A few Big Rig spots are available, but this is a Suffolk County Campground that is not well maintained."

Most RV parks in the area require advance reservations, especially during summer beach season. Road conditions vary significantly between campgrounds, with some parks presenting access challenges. Approaching Blydenburgh Park requires navigating "2 miles of road with many areas of missing blacktop making a very rough ride with low branches," according to one reviewer. The dump station there is described as "basically not accessible to a big rig." Pets are welcome at most facilities including Smith Point, Cathedral Pines, and Heckscher State Park. Cell service is generally reliable throughout the region. Limited winter camping options exist, with Smith Point County Park among the few RV parks open year-round. Many sites throughout Suffolk County lack sewer hookups at individual campsites, though dump stations are typically available.

      Blydenburgh County Park

      Big Rig Camping in Blydenburgh

We have a 42 ft 5th wheel toy hauler. A few Big Rig spots are available, but this is a Suffock Co Campground that is not well maintained. 2 miles of the Road have many areas of missing blacktop making a very rough ride with low branches. The dump station is basically not accessible to a big rig. Most of the longer sites were very difficult to level.

      Indian Island County Park

      Great location, beautiful views

Wonderful weekend visit in the off season. Site was level, pretty spacious and easy to back into. Campsites are located close enough to the beach/marsh. Multiple playgrounds for the kids although they were closed due to Covid. No sewers sites that I could tell, and water was off because we were a week shy of the season opening. Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there. Nice neighbors. Dog friendly. People obeyed the quiet hours. I have not one complaint. There were hiking trails and geocaching on site. 4 stars bc no sewer at the campsite and we like full hook ups and honestly I’m guessing this is a county rule but the playgrounds could’ve been open. Outside and socially distanced after dealing with Covid for a whole year and most local parks and playgrounds being open since last May... that was upsetting. All in all we had a great weekend. Close to the LI aquarium as well! Many stores and a golf course near by too!

      Riverdale Farm Campsites

Great camping near Mystic off I-95

This is a really nice family campground just a mile or so off I-95 in Clinton, CT. It is about 20 miles from Mystic and the historic seaport center. Most of the roads are paved, the sites are large and level, there are full hookups, and a dump station. There are a lot of seasonal residents, but still plenty of open sites for travelers. There is a playground, game room, “adult ” lounge, a laundry, a swimming pond, and river access for fishing and swimming. Internet is an extra fee! ($6/day) The road into the campground is narrow and winding, so larger RV mss as y have trouble, but there were several of them there when we were there. There is a security gate at the entrance.

      Hammonasset State Park Campground

large family friendly campground with beach access

Hammonasset Beach State Park Campground is huge, family-friendly, and has direct beach access from the campground. There is no lifeguard on duty at the campground beach but lifeguards patrol the beach a mile or so north within the park. Smaller (car-top) boats can be launched from this area as well.

The campsites do NOT include a fire pit (or grill). You must bring your own or there are fire tub rentals available at the campground store.

The park includes a Nature Center complete with exhibits and activities, and hiking trails. Bald eagles can be seen on the nature reserve.

Expect long lines at the state park entrance fee station on the weekend if the weather is nice.

      Heckscher State Park Campground

      Great Late Fall Weekend Cabin

This was a last-minute booking for us and we were delighted with the beachside cottage, with enough amenities that mom and dad did not worry we had their cutie with us for "camping". She's too little for backpacking into the woods but finally got to stay overnight and help with the campfire!

      Pros

      • Modern facility with full kitchen accessories (coffee maker, plates, wine opener, can opener, silverware, pots, pans, cooking utensils, toaster, oven), sponge/dish liquid. Microwave.1
      • Clean interior, clean campground
      • modern cottage with propane fireplace, WiFi access, bathroom with shower, large screened in porch with bar height table and 4 chairs, deck with chaise lounges, two bedrooms (1 with 2 twin beds, 1 with full), coach, chairs, plenty of clean storage places and hooks. You have everything but bedding, food, drinks, and personal items.
      • cottages far enough away from each other
      • fire ring with Adirondack chairs
      • dumpster and recycling within walking distance
      • lots of bone dry firewood around for campfire
      • walkable beach
      • beautiful
      • wildlife: deer, rabbits, turtles

      Cons

      • a bit pricey
      • playground is driving distance not walking

      Hammonasset State Park Campground

      Peaceful 4th of July 2020

This campsite is near the shore in my home state of CT. It took a little over an hour to get here. Our spot was near a large salt marsh.

The park and beach were full occupancy for campers without reservations. I saw no tents - maybe due to COVID. There are ample bathhouses but the one near me is locked up. I suspect the others may also be closed.

A pair of geese and their goslings came to visit. See video and pictures.

No campfires allowed without a fire pit. You can rent one at the small camp store for a $20 deposit plus $12 first night the $2 each night - pay in advance.

Sites are large and clean. My site has trees for shade and a place to hang my hammock. But the park officials made me take it down :(.

Water hookup but no electricity on our sites. Water for drinking only was on my site but you can’t connect with a hose to your camper in most of the less expensive sites. There are more expensive sites with full hookups but no Wi-Fi.

Price of my site is very affordable around $20 a night.

I saw 2 dump stations near exit. Supermarkets a few miles down the road.

Easy to walk to the beach. Plan to kayak. There is a boat launch at Meig’s Point where you can drive 100 feet from the water to unload from your car. Lovely small beaches, walkways and jetties for fishing or photos of nature.

      Wildwood State Park Campground

      Camper side review

Stayed here for two nights with my popup and was surrounded by large motor homes/RVs. sites had zero privacy and were all pull through. There was water, electric and sewer hookups at each site, but this was an expensive place to ‘camp’. Bathrooms and showers were not really clean, which was surprising because most people used their personal bathroom/shower in their RV. It is close to the beach, but a very small and rocky beach. Overall, I don’t think this was the best place for us.

      Wildwood State Park Campground

Close to the beach and clean facility

This is a popular site in the peak season. The beach is in a walking distance. You can swim or fish there. This camp site has a relatively new and clean facility.

There are many farms near by where you can get fresh veggies and fruits.

    Guide to St. James

Suffolk County campgrounds near St. James offer opportunities for RV travel within forested areas and coastal locations. Temperatures range from 30-40°F in winter to 70-85°F during summer beach season. The area features both wooded inland sites and oceanfront camping options along the southern shore.

    What to do

Beach access: Smith Point County Park provides direct ocean and bay access within walking distance of campsites. "A short walk from the ocean to the bay, both accessible by walking from your campsite. No shade so be prepared to wake early if you're in a sweltering tent."

Wildlife observation: Watch for local fauna throughout the camping season. At Smith Point, visitors report "you get visits from the nearby deer" and some campers mention that "the deer eat lettuce out of your hand."

Cycling: Bring bicycles to explore coastal areas and campground surroundings. At Heckscher State Park Campground, "you can ride the loop around to the beach; you can also drive to the beach."

    What campers like

Proximity to water: Oceanfront camping provides memorable views. At Smith's Point, "our 36ft motorhome backed up to a raised balcony overlooking the bay. Less than 100 feet from the front of our site was the beach and the Atlantic Ocean view."

Clean facilities: Cathedral Pines County Park offers well-maintained wooded sites away from beachfront locations. "Wooded sites are lovely. RV sites in large field."

Family atmosphere: Many parks cater to families with activities and playgrounds. "The park is clean the bathrooms are well maintained and there is a playground for the kids," notes a visitor to Battle Row Campground.

    What you should know

Winter limitations: Year-round RV parks in St. James, New York are limited. "North Fork Cottages & RV Resort in Greenport has big-rig friendly sites with full hookups, though the season runs only May through November."

Site boundaries: Some campgrounds lack clear site separation. At Heckscher State Park, "the sites are designated by printing on the roads and do not have clear boundaries between them" and "there aren't clear paths to the restroom building so it's not uncommon for people to cut through the edges of sites to get there."

Seasonal considerations: October camping offers unique advantages. "Being on the beach and camping in October is just awesome. The bugs are gone, the days are warm and the nights are chilly."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Eastern Long Island Kampground provides recreation options for children. "First time going, but best vacation ever according to kids," reported one family.

Evening entertainment: Some parks offer unexpected activities. Smith Point campers mention "it happened to be Trick or Treat weekend on the campground which really fun to see" during October visits.

Space considerations: Cathedral Pines offers good site spacing. "Usually every site has a decent fire pit/grill. Usually quiet, occasional deer. Be sure to lock food away as the raccoons are pretty invasive."

    Tips from RVers

Site selection: At Smith Point, corner sites provide additional space. "Stayed on the bayside (site 30), which had a fantastic direct bay view. Although most sites have views of the bay, some are blocked by seagrass (for example site 28 - huge corner spot but the flat spot to park has an obstructed view)."

Booking requirements: Many rv parks near St. James, New York have residency rules. "ONLY DRAWBACKS, 1- YOU HAVE TO BE A RESIDENT OF SUFFOLK CO, NY, 2- ONE WEEK STAY AT A TIME. PERIOD."

Shower facilities: Shower quality varies between campgrounds. Smith Point County Park provides "showers were amazing and also so clean! Great water pressure and super HOT!!!" while some visitors to other parks opt to "wait and shower at home" due to maintenance issues.
