      Robert Moses State Park Campground

Robert Moses in 1,000 Islands near Canada

Lovely State Park in the 1,000 Islands where water activities are the main attraction. Make sure to check out the island too! The park spans the island and a little snaking river-like bay. Really pretty to explore on boat. Easy and very pretty trails on site, walk along the shore too. Decent wildlife and great birding. Feels very isolated though easy to get to. Bring your passport, you can see Canada from some of the picnic grounds. Incredible sunsets!!!

Quality State Park facilities, clean. Camping ranges from tents in shady woods to cabins. Some sites are pretty private, even the ones that aren't are quiet.

Note: Robert Moses apparently did a lot in New York State. This park is near Canada! There is also a Robert Moses beach on Long Island near NYC (Fire Island National Seashore) and Robert Moses parkway near Niagara Falls. These are all 8+ hours from each other! Be careful with your mapping apps and in getting advice for travel.

      Higley Flow State Park Campground

Favorite place to camp in NY

Whether it's playing in the water or in the playground this place is awesome to bring your children. The showers and restrooms were kept very clean and The Pavilions were wonderful places to have a family picnic. The campsites are also well maintained and it was very simple to just back up a little mobile home into the camping spot the picturesque Landscapes made the sunsets absolutely beautiful. Out of all of the places that I have been in New York this is by far one of my favorite places to go

      Fish Creek Pond Campground

      A little slice of heaven

I have stayed here many times over the years, usually for a 10-18 day stretch at a time. This is one of my favorite places. Most sites are right on the water. Square pond is a lovely little lake that connects to a larger lake (Upper Saranac I believe) by passing through a canal. This campground has great facilities. There are restrooms located convieniently throughout the park so you never have to walk more than a few sites no matter where you are. There are hot showers located at one end of the park and a dump station for RVs. The restrooms and showers are cleaned daily. There is a great little general store just outside the park that sells pretty much anything you could want. Sites are equipped with a table and fireplace (most have grates). There are vendors that drive through the park daily selling wood, ice cream (from an old fashioned wagon, get the moose tracks!), and ice. There is a boat supplier that travels the lake every morning and evening dropping off and picking up kayak and canoe rentals. If you love water front camping this is for you! The park is pet friendly but you need to show proof of vaccines. There are great things to do nearby like the Adirondack Museum, Lake Placid, and beautiful hiking spots. You can have power boats and jets skis on the lake as well as non motorized boats. Some of the best sunsets I have ever viewed happened right here. Quiet hours are taken very seriously and rangers walk the park at night warning rowdy fireside folks to quiet down. However, as dusk turns to night, you can always count on the chorus of yodels going back and forth across the lake. This is a wonderful spot! Check it out! You won’t be sorry! Oh, but sites go on sale nine months in advance through reserve America and the best spots wind up booked for the season pretty quickly.

      Fish Creek Pond Campground

      Kayaking paradise!

This is a gorgeous campground on the banks of Fish Creek Pond and Square pond close to Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake.

Very site has water access, and the water is super shallow all along the shoreline. It’s perfect for dogs, kids, and hanging out in the water. The bottom is sandy with some rocks, good to have water shoes but not essential. Sites 65-100 get a great view of the sunset! Our site was level and dry, as were the surrounding sites. There’s not much brush on the sites and there are lots of old, tall trees, so I had tons of places to put up our dogs tie out, my hammock, and the clothes line.

There were clean bath houses everywhere and one shower building on the west side of Square Pond. I was surprised by the number of bathrooms, you’ll never be far from one while camping here.

Over all, one of my favorite camping weekends ever, it was a gorgeous spot for water sports and great for a run or bike ride. Don’t sleep on this spot!

      Jones Pond NYSDEC Primitive Campsites

Nice spot for a couple nights

Stayed here with a group of friends at site #4. Was a great spot and lots of room for our 4 tents/3vehicles. It was over the July 4th week, so very busy and found people would just walk through your campsite. Which of course would make our dogs bark at them. Also a lot of people just walking the road, so privacy can really be hit or miss. A lot of people have their dogs off leash as well. One of the rangers stopped by and sure did have a big chip on his shoulder. Overall would stay again, but would maybe instead stay at site 5 or over at a short hike in spot along Jones Pond rd. Overall a great place, just wish people would have more respect when around others campsites.

      Cranberry Lake Campground

Great campground for the back country feel with real bathrooms

We spent two nights here with our dogs over Labor Day weekend 2017. The site is well maintained, the bathrooms are clean, and we had plenty of privacy from our neighbors. During night one we got up to run to the bathroom and did see a coyote checking out the perimeter of camp looking for food, and probably trying to figure out what new animals were nearby (our dogs), but overall we had no issues with animals approaching us. Be sure to follow the rule of keeping all food in your car overnight otherwise you'll end up with a campsite visitor. Besides that, it was a great experience. The main trailheads were a 2-minute walk from camp, and everything was very well maintained.

    What to do

Water recreation options: At Pine Ridge Park Campsite, visitors have access to boat launches and water activities. "We stayed for a weekend and were lucky enough to get a premium site on the water. We stated in site 206 which was very large and had a private little beach area," notes a camper at Robert Moses State Park.

Hiking trails: Cranberry Lake Campground offers accessible trailheads just minutes from camp. "The main trailheads were a 2-minute walk from camp, and everything was very well maintained," reports one visitor. The locks raise and lower ships traveling between the Great Lakes and Atlantic Ocean, with observation areas open to the public.

    What campers like

Waterfront privacy: Many campers praise the waterfront sites at Rollins Pond Campground for their seclusion. "Almost all the sites are lakefront. Great kayak and canoe access to a whole network of lakes in the St. Regis/Saranac area," notes one reviewer. The campground layout provides more space between sites than neighboring facilities.

Clean facilities: The maintenance of bathrooms and shower facilities receives consistent praise. "The bathrooms are kept tidy, the shower house is classic and clean, and there is an extensive recycling facility," mentions a Rollins Pond visitor. Many campgrounds maintain free hot showers with timed water systems.

Wildlife viewing: Campers regularly report wildlife sightings, particularly birds. "I came across the largest and most beautiful sounding loon early in the morning...perfect before we had to pack it up and leave," shares a visitor at Higley Flow. Another camper at Rollins Pond notes, "falling asleep to loons is priceless! We always have wildlife at our site. This past trip we had chipmunks, squirrels, ducks, and a crane."

    What you should know

Seasonal fluctuations: The camping season typically runs from mid-May through early October. Water levels can change dramatically, especially at Higley Flow State Park Campground, where "this river has many dams and is used for hydro power the water level can go up and down 2-3 feet from one day to the next."

Site variations: Campsite quality and privacy vary significantly within each campground. "Those sites are large and wooded, most all paved (not always very level!)" reports a Higley Flow camper. At Coles Creek, "sites are tightly packed and a lot is in open areas where you're camping with all of your neighbors."

Site leveling: Pay attention to site descriptions when booking. At Higley Flow, sites are "paved (not always very level!)" according to campers. Rollins Pond offers more natural settings with "no hookups, so a bit trickier for RVs, but being right on the water makes it worth it."
