    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

RV campgrounds around Potsdam provide varied options for motorhome travelers in northern New York. Riverside Campground in Brasher Falls features big-rig friendly sites with full hookups including 50-amp electrical service, water, and sewer connections. "We stayed for a weekend and were lucky enough to get a premium site on the water. We had a very large site with a private little beach area," noted one camper. Babbling Brook RV Park in Fort Covington offers similar hookup capabilities with a May to September operating season, while Pine Ridge Park Campsite in Constable provides 30-amp service, pull-through RV pads, and drinking water. Jacques Cartier State Park Campground accommodates larger motorhomes with both 30 and 50-amp electrical options on more spacious sites near the water.

Most area campgrounds require advance reservations, particularly during peak summer months and fall foliage season. Sanitary dump stations are available at nearly all locations, though not all sites offer sewer hookups at individual motorhome pads. Cell service can be unreliable in this region, with one reviewer noting their "AT&T service was not good and kept bouncing off Canadian towers." Winter camping is limited, with most facilities closing between late September and mid-October. Pet-friendly policies are common, though restrictions apply at certain parks. Firewood is available for purchase at many locations, and several campgrounds feature on-site markets for basic supplies. Navigation to some parks involves rural roads that may present challenges for larger rigs during inclement weather.

      Fish Creek Pond Campground

      A little slice of heaven

I have stayed here many times over the years, usually for a 10-18 day stretch at a time. This is one of my favorite places. Most sites are right on the water. Square pond is a lovely little lake that connects to a larger lake (Upper Saranac I believe) by passing through a canal. This campground has great facilities. There are restrooms located convieniently throughout the park so you never have to walk more than a few sites no matter where you are. There are hot showers located at one end of the park and a dump station for RVs. The restrooms and showers are cleaned daily. There is a great little general store just outside the park that sells pretty much anything you could want. Sites are equipped with a table and fireplace (most have grates). There are vendors that drive through the park daily selling wood, ice cream (from an old fashioned wagon, get the moose tracks!), and ice. There is a boat supplier that travels the lake every morning and evening dropping off and picking up kayak and canoe rentals. If you love water front camping this is for you! The park is pet friendly but you need to show proof of vaccines. There are great things to do nearby like the Adirondack Museum, Lake Placid, and beautiful hiking spots. You can have power boats and jets skis on the lake as well as non motorized boats. Some of the best sunsets I have ever viewed happened right here. Quiet hours are taken very seriously and rangers walk the park at night warning rowdy fireside folks to quiet down. However, as dusk turns to night, you can always count on the chorus of yodels going back and forth across the lake. This is a wonderful spot! Check it out! You won’t be sorry! Oh, but sites go on sale nine months in advance through reserve America and the best spots wind up booked for the season pretty quickly.

      Cranberry Lake Campground

      Camping at Cranberry Lake

This has been one of my favorite campgrounds and I have camped there many times over the last several decades. Always well maintained, but peaceful state forest campground with spacious sites, many right on the water. There is an official beach, but the water sites really have their own access for canoes and nice swimming. The water is crystal clear, sunsets magnificent, canoeing and hiking opportunities abound, and even on a "busy" summer weekend the campground is quiet and the fellow campers are low key and respectful. For a tent camper, this is an ideal location and I love it. Fire ring, even tenting spot, picnic tables, etc. There are numerous accessible campsites, a shower building, and regular restrooms as well as privvies. Small trailers can fit and their is an RV dumpstation, but this is not a campground for big rigs and hookups. The campground is a little off the beaten path and in the further reaches of the Adirondacks for most campers, and the vicinity is one of the largest and most pristine areas in the ADK wilderness. Come well supplied with groceries and camping needs as there isnt much nearby. The SUNY Forestry school maintains a Ranger school at nearby Wanakena on the west side of the lake, and a Field Biology station on the south side of the lake. Nice hiking in the area

Ranger Review: Aftershokz Titanium Headphones @ Cranberry Lake State Park

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I am one of the lucky ones who gets gear to review from time to time. We recently tested out the Aftershokz Titanium Bone Conduction Headphones at this gorgeous campground in the Adirondacks! Pretty cool…

      Gear Review

What we liked most about this product:

      • Versatile: Can be used just about anywhere you want to be able to listen to music or a podcast (without disturbing others), but also want to be able to hear people coming down the trail, birds singing, the ocean crashing along the shore, etc. They are just as great in a library as they are outside.
      • Compact: While they don’t fold down as small as a pair of traditional headphones, they are pocket-sized and can easily be stored in a jacket or a pocket of a backpack.
      • Lightweight: You barely feel them on your head and are very comfortable to wear for long periods of time.
      • Better for Ear Health: Because the headphones use bone conduction technology rather than sit inside your ear, they are much better for the long term health of your hearing.
      • Blue Tooth Technology: Cordless is wonderful…enough said!

      What could be improved:

      • Adjustability: If they were made to adjust to each person’s head size, they would be even more comfortable. If you have a smaller head, they drape down a bit at the nape of your neck and bounce a bit while walking/cycling. They fit my husband’s head perfectly, but are a bit large on me.

      Campground Review

Wow, what a gorgeous campground! This one came recommended from a friend and we fell in love at first sight. The campground reminded us of summer camp on the lake, as it seemed frozen in time. Each site has a picnic table and open grill and all sites are non-electric. We stayed in site #45, right on the edge of the lake, with great kayak access.

We spent one day kayaking on the lake and another day hiking. While the mosquitoes weren’t bad at the campground itself, they are terrible on the trails this time of year, so bring your bug spray, or better yet, bug shirts! We’ll need to come back in the winter and do some snowshoeing on these trails, so we can enjoy them mosquito free.

The bathrooms are kept tidy, the shower house is classic and clean, and there is an extensive recycling facility (yay for NY and ADK!). There is also a sand volleyball court and basketball hoop. Bonus: There was a huge stack of free wood piled near the shower house!

The Village of Cranberry Lake has some supplies, but not much except the very basics at the general store. You’ll need to head to Star Lake or Tupper Lake for anything of significance.

We did our usual reservation-less “pull up and see what they have open” style of camping, but during the main season, this place is busy! You’ll definitely need to plan ahead and make reservations if you plan to be here during the crazy season.

      Fish Creek Pond Campground

      On the water!

We have a rather large rig (36 ft fifth wheel plus the truck) & while fish creek is notoriously a tent only/small rig campground we fit perfectly & our site has cell service! 10/10! Site 106! The water views/access is hard to beat as well.

      Higley Flow State Park Campground

      Raquette River area

Cousins went here a lot while they were in college nearby, but it never seemed overrun with college kids. ADK foothills so you don’t get high peak views, but the lake and forests on site are lovely. Went XC skiing in winter, was nice and pretty easy. Basic and clean state facilities.

      Higley Flow State Park Campground

      Camping on the Raquette River

We usually head for the Adirondack lakes further down the road but it's still in the foot hills, close to our home and very pretty especially at sunset. It's convenient for the locals nearby to group camp there so it can be a little busy and loud during the day if you don't get a more private site which there are plenty of. Those sites are large and wooded, most all paved (not always very level!) and if you don't get a water site you may still be able to drag your small boat and walk to the water bit there is a nice boat launch. It's convenient that the park supplys trash containers by the roadside of your site for recyclables and trash and also pick it up often. Since this river has many dams and is used for hydro power the water level can go up and down 2-3 feet from one day to the next. It didnt affect our kayaking fun, swimming or fishing and was intriguing. I came across the largest and most beautiful sounding loon early in the morning...perfect before we had to pack it up and leave. Will post a video of the loon calling another along with pictures. Turn up the volume.

    Guide to Potsdam

Potsdam camping options stretch across St. Lawrence County in northern New York, typically at elevations between 300-500 feet. The camping season generally runs May through September, with peak temperatures averaging 75-85°F in summer months. Winter camping isn't available at most locations as temperatures frequently drop below freezing from November through March.

    What to do

Fishing access points: Higley Flow State Park Campground offers excellent fishing on the Raquette River. "Whether it's playing in the water or in the playground this place is awesome to bring your children," notes one visitor. The park features multiple fishing spots with varying water levels due to dam operations.

Kayaking opportunities: Cranberry Lake Campground provides direct water access. "We spent one day kayaking on the lake and another day hiking," reports a camper. The lake spans over 6,000 acres with numerous coves and inlets to explore by paddle craft.

Local attractions: Visit the Eisenhower Locks near Massena to watch ships transit between water levels. "Be sure to visit the nearby Eisenhower Locks and see the ships go through. Really fascinating!" advises a camper who stayed at Barnhart Island Camping Area.

    What campers like

Private waterfront sites: Jacques Cartier State Park Campground features premium waterfront spots. "We book early so we can get a water front site. Everyone swims, kayaks, and paddle boards off their sites," explains a regular visitor. Waterfront sites typically book 6-9 months in advance.

Family-friendly atmosphere: Pine Ridge Park Campsite organizes regular activities. "My family started camping at Pine ridge in 2018 as seasonal campers because we had heard all the great reviews," shares a camper. "The whole time they are open they have activities planned for the kids all summer long."

Clean facilities: Bathrooms and shower buildings at most parks receive regular maintenance. "The park is unbelievably well kept. The sites are large with some located with waterfront," reports a visitor to Jacques Cartier State Park. Several campgrounds have recently upgraded their shower facilities.

    What you should know

Cell service limitations: Coverage varies significantly across the region. A visitor noted that "my AT&T service was not good and kept bouncing off Canadian towers so be careful!" Verizon typically has better coverage in the northern New York region.

Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds fill quickly during summer. "We did our usual reservation-less 'pull up and see what they have open' style of camping, but during the main season, this place is busy! You'll definitely need to plan ahead," advises a Cranberry Lake camper.

Limited supplies: Eel Weir State Park Campground and similar remote locations have few amenities nearby. "They sell firewood right up the road or you can just visit the Amish for wood scraps," notes a camper, highlighting the need to bring most supplies with you.

    Tips for camping with families

Swimming areas: Several parks offer dedicated swim zones with varying amenities. "Swimming hole was nice and relaxing. Plenty of sand for the kids to play in and the water was warmer than expected," reports a visitor to Jacques Cartier State Park.

Playgrounds: Multiple campgrounds have recently installed or upgraded play equipment. "There's a great guarded beach if you have young ones with a newer playground right next to it," mentions an Alycia M. at Jacques Cartier.

Wildlife viewing: Keep watch for local animals, especially in early morning. "I came across the largest and most beautiful sounding loon early in the morning," shares a camper at Higley Flow, while another at Eel Weir mentions "the family of owls that inhabit the trees that you see every night."

    Tips from RVers

Site selection for larger rigs: RV sites near Potsdam, New York vary in accessibility. "Some sites were hilly and we would not have been able to get our trailer in, so its worth calling before you book," advises a camper who stayed at Jacques Cartier with a small travel trailer.

Hookup availability: Natural Bridge/Watertown KOA provides full-service sites with good separation. "The sites are small, but there are mature trees between them & woodsy areas around the campsites," notes a reviewer, adding that "the laundry room and bathrooms were clean."

Leveling challenges: Be prepared with leveling blocks at state parks. "Sites are large and wooded, most all paved (not always very level!)" cautions a visitor to Higley Flow regarding the campground's paved but uneven pads.
