Best RV Parks & Resorts near Northport, NY

Several RV campgrounds operate within driving distance of Northport, New York. Battle Row Campground in Old Bethpage offers year-round sites for recreational vehicles without electric hookups but provides water connections and fire rings. Cathedral Pines County Park in Middle Island features electric hookups and water access across their RV sites positioned in a large field. "RV sites have zero privacy and were all pull through," noted one visitor about Wildwood State Park, where full hookups include water, electric, and sewer connections. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City provides 90 designated RV sites with water and electric hookups, offering convenient access to New York City attractions.

Advance reservations are essential during peak season, particularly for waterfront locations like Smith Point County Park in Shirley. Suffolk County parks require access permits with different fee structures for residents versus non-residents. A review mentioned that "Suffolk County is really only RV friendly place. Worth buying green key card for resident access." Many campgrounds feature sanitary dump stations, though availability varies by location. Heckscher State Park accommodates larger rigs with fifty-amp service but operates seasonally from late May through early September. Roadways within some older parks may present challenges for longer motorhomes, with tight turns and limited maneuvering space at certain pull-through rv pads.

    Blydenburgh County Park

    Big Rig Camping in Blydenburgh

We have a 42 ft 5th wheel toy hauler. A few Big Rig spots are available, but this is a Suffock Co Campground that is not well maintained. 2 miles of the Road have many areas of missing blacktop making a very rough ride with low branches. The dump station is basically not accessible to a big rig. Most of the longer sites were very difficult to level.

    Indian Island County Park

    Great location, beautiful views

Wonderful weekend visit in the off season. Site was level, pretty spacious and easy to back into. Campsites are located close enough to the beach/marsh. Multiple playgrounds for the kids although they were closed due to Covid. No sewers sites that I could tell, and water was off because we were a week shy of the season opening. Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there. Nice neighbors. Dog friendly. People obeyed the quiet hours. I have not one complaint. There were hiking trails and geocaching on site. 4 stars bc no sewer at the campsite and we like full hook ups and honestly I’m guessing this is a county rule but the playgrounds could’ve been open. Outside and socially distanced after dealing with Covid for a whole year and most local parks and playgrounds being open since last May... that was upsetting. All in all we had a great weekend. Close to the LI aquarium as well! Many stores and a golf course near by too!

    Hammonasset State Park Campground

large family friendly campground with beach access

Hammonasset Beach State Park Campground is huge, family-friendly, and has direct beach access from the campground. There is no lifeguard on duty at the campground beach but lifeguards patrol the beach a mile or so north within the park. Smaller (car-top) boats can be launched from this area as well.

The campsites do NOT include a fire pit (or grill). You must bring your own or there are fire tub rentals available at the campground store.

The park includes a Nature Center complete with exhibits and activities, and hiking trails. Bald eagles can be seen on the nature reserve.

Expect long lines at the state park entrance fee station on the weekend if the weather is nice.

    Riverdale Farm Campsites

Great camping near Mystic off I-95

This is a really nice family campground just a mile or so off I-95 in Clinton, CT. It is about 20 miles from Mystic and the historic seaport center. Most of the roads are paved, the sites are large and level, there are full hookups, and a dump station. There are a lot of seasonal residents, but still plenty of open sites for travelers. There is a playground, game room, “adult ” lounge, a laundry, a swimming pond, and river access for fishing and swimming. Internet is an extra fee! ($6/day) The road into the campground is narrow and winding, so larger RV mss as y have trouble, but there were several of them there when we were there. There is a security gate at the entrance.

    Hammonasset State Park Campground

    Peaceful 4th of July 2020

This campsite is near the shore in my home state of CT. It took a little over an hour to get here. Our spot was near a large salt marsh.

The park and beach were full occupancy for campers without reservations. I saw no tents - maybe due to COVID. There are ample bathhouses but the one near me is locked up. I suspect the others may also be closed.

A pair of geese and their goslings came to visit. See video and pictures.

No campfires allowed without a fire pit. You can rent one at the small camp store for a $20 deposit plus $12 first night the $2 each night - pay in advance.

Sites are large and clean. My site has trees for shade and a place to hang my hammock. But the park officials made me take it down :(.

Water hookup but no electricity on our sites. Water for drinking only was on my site but you can’t connect with a hose to your camper in most of the less expensive sites. There are more expensive sites with full hookups but no Wi-Fi.

Price of my site is very affordable around $20 a night.

I saw 2 dump stations near exit. Supermarkets a few miles down the road.

Easy to walk to the beach. Plan to kayak. There is a boat launch at Meig’s Point where you can drive 100 feet from the water to unload from your car. Lovely small beaches, walkways and jetties for fishing or photos of nature.

    Heckscher State Park Campground

    Great Late Fall Weekend Cabin

This was a last-minute booking for us and we were delighted with the beachside cottage, with enough amenities that mom and dad did not worry we had their cutie with us for "camping". She's too little for backpacking into the woods but finally got to stay overnight and help with the campfire!

    Pros

    • Modern facility with full kitchen accessories (coffee maker, plates, wine opener, can opener, silverware, pots, pans, cooking utensils, toaster, oven), sponge/dish liquid. Microwave.1
    • Clean interior, clean campground
    • modern cottage with propane fireplace, WiFi access, bathroom with shower, large screened in porch with bar height table and 4 chairs, deck with chaise lounges, two bedrooms (1 with 2 twin beds, 1 with full), coach, chairs, plenty of clean storage places and hooks. You have everything but bedding, food, drinks, and personal items.
    • cottages far enough away from each other
    • fire ring with Adirondack chairs
    • dumpster and recycling within walking distance
    • lots of bone dry firewood around for campfire
    • walkable beach
    • beautiful
    • wildlife: deer, rabbits, turtles

    Cons

    • a bit pricey
    • playground is driving distance not walking

Beaver Pond Campground — Harriman State Park

    Quiet, off-season, mid-week retreat

We stayed here on a Thursday night in September prior to taking off backpacking. The campground was clean and quiet. RV hook-ups, tent platforms, and rustic tent sites were available. Our rustic tent site had a few good options for pitching a tent, as well as picnic table and fire ring.

Ranger said that during summer weekends the grounds fill up and can be quite noisy, but mid-week during the off-season it was great. Expect to purchase firewood, although scrounging for kindling was possible. Facilities were clean and what you'd expect from a campground.

    Would definitely return!!

Guide to Northport

Cathedral Pines County Park in Middle Island offers tent and RV camping within a wooded setting accessible year-round. Located about 25 miles from Northport, the Suffolk County facility provides electric hookups and water access across flat terrain. Smith Point County Park requires advance reservations, particularly during summer when their waterfront sites fill quickly.

What to do

Beach access at Smith Point: Cross the dunes for ocean swimming at Smith Point County Park, where campsites position visitors between the bay and Atlantic Ocean. "A short walk from the ocean to the bay, both accessible by walking from your campsite. No shade so be prepared to wake early if you're in a sweltering tent," notes a recent visitor to Smith Point County Park.

Hiking trails throughout Harriman: Explore the extensive trail system within Harriman State Park, including sections of the Appalachian Trail and historical paths dating to Revolutionary times. A camper at Beaver Pond Campground observed that "the trails in the area are friendly to hikers, bikers, and the non arthritic kneers, as most are rated moderate to challenging." The park also offers trails rated as easy and accessible for those with mobility limitations.

Swimming at Canopus Lake: Visit Fahnestock State Park for water activities on their open-water beach. "This park has a nice open beach on Canopus Lake with a concession area and bathhouse, which we found to be quite clean! They even have boat rentals - or you can bring your own boat to launch," reported a visitor to Clarence Fahnestock State Park.

What campers like

Proximity to NYC transportation: Liberty Harbor RV Park positions campers for easy city exploration without driving into Manhattan. "This is a prime location for visiting the city or heading down the shore. The light rail is a block away, and the path train is about 8," notes a reviewer at Liberty Harbor RV Park. Many visitors appreciate the location despite the tight spacing of sites.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Multiple parks near Northport offer chances to observe local fauna, especially deer. At Smith Point County Park, one camper mentioned, "At nite an ice cream truck comes by, you get visits from the nearby deer. It is paradise." Another visitor reported, "I watched a momma deer nursing two of her babies."

Off-season tranquility: While summer brings crowds, shoulder-season camping provides quieter experiences. "We stayed here on a Thursday night in September prior to taking off backpacking. The campground was clean and quiet," notes a Beaver Pond visitor. Similarly, Fahnestock State Park reviewers mention, "Weekends - this park is FULL! Make sure to reserve at least two weeks out. Weekdays? You should be in luck!"

What you should know

Campsite privacy varies significantly: Many rv camping areas near Northport offer limited separation between sites. At Cathedral Pines County Park, "Wooded sites are lovely. RV sites in large field," indicating the contrast in site privacy. Beaver Pond Campground offers better spacing: "The biggest positive about Beaver Pond is how spread out it was. You definitely feel like you have your own space."

Fire restrictions differ by location: Not all campgrounds provide fire pits or allow ground fires. Heckscher State Park does not include fire pits, with one camper noting: "I was unaware there were no fire pits at the site so I would just bring your own." At Battle Row Campground, "Fires are allowed but you must have a fire container or bucket for your fire off of the ground."

Bathroom maintenance inconsistent: Facilities range widely in cleanliness and upkeep. A Battle Row Campground visitor mentioned, "The bathrooms are run down and not well kept," while another stated, "The showers were amazing and also so clean!" This variation appears common across multiple parks in the region.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds include dedicated play areas for children. Battle Row Campground offers "a playground for the kids" that is "centrally located" according to reviews. Similarly, Beaver Pond has facilities designed with families in mind, with one visitor noting it's a "great place for kids" with a "playground, showers, bathroom."

Beach camping with kids: Heckscher State Park provides family-friendly camping near beach areas. "This place is great for families who want a safe space to camp and it's a typical Long Island campground. Rangers came around checking on everyone often so it really did feel incredibly safe," reports one visitor. The campground includes a playground specifically for campers.

Special events during summer: Some parks offer seasonal entertainment for families. A camper at Heckscher mentioned, "On one visit there was a magician performing for the camp goers. I've even been there while there was a philharmonic concert near the campground." These unexpected activities can enhance family camping trips.

Tips from RVers

Limited hookups at county parks: Most Suffolk County parks provide basic electric and water connections but limited full-hookup sites. At Skyline RV Camp, campers noted, "There no longer is a waterfront view of the NYC skyline when camping at Skyline RV. The website views are misleading," indicating research before arrival helps set expectations.

Dump station access varies: Not all rv camping facilities near Northport provide sanitary dump stations. Liberty Harbor has one but reviewers found it inconvenient: "There is a dump station, but not the easiest to use." When traveling with larger rigs, verify dump station availability and accessibility before arrival.

NYC-adjacent parking fees: When selecting rv camping near Northport with plans to visit New York City, factor in additional transportation costs. A Liberty Harbor camper advised, "Getting in and out of the city is an adventure. Stay right off the highway to avoid the $30 tunnel toll."
