    Treetopia Campground

    Amazing camping/Glamping!

Treetopia is a unique and truly amazing camping/Glamping experience in the Catskills, New York! We were able to meet Betty, Treetopia’s manager, who toured us around the campground and took us into each type of rental they provide for that special camping trip. They have RV sites, yurts, custom furnished treehouses with electricity, beautiful tiny homes with outdoor living spaces, completely remodeled vintage airstreams, and gorgeous private cabins! Every unit was more beautiful and comfortable than the next. The backdrop for the campground is the wonderful Catskill Mountains and all of the nature that includes. A wonderfully inspiring place! 😊👍🏻

If you have an RV, they have 30/50 amp with electric and water. There is no sewer, but they have a dump-station and on-site Honeywagon truck that you can schedule. They staff was wonderful and went out of their way to make our stay perfect! 💗

    Caroga Lake Campground

Good facility, lacks much to do

We were there 4th of July weekend, and the park was fully booked. Very friendly rangers, electricity in bathrooms, hot showers, and a nice dishwashing and recycling center.

The campsite connects to the beach area and there is boat rental, but no pets allowed in the beach area.

For us, a drawback was a lack of any hikes connecting to the campsite.

    Moose Hillock Camping Resorts

    Nothing special

The good: large, spacious, private sites that are all fairly level and all about the same size. Beautiful pool with 2 water slides, arcade, and cafe that wasn’t opened during the week but will be starting July 1. Clean facilities. Store was fairly well stocked with things you might’ve forgot to pack. Staff was nice.
The not so good: lots of rules and charges for every little thing, our walkie talkies picked up on staff conversations and we heard they wanted to charge a family a guest fee for a delivery driver if he was on site more than 15 minutes, Showers cost money at $0.25 per 4 minutes, no wifi at all and poor cell reception, pool is NOT heated as they state all over their website, trash is not picked up, no activities or anything to do other than swim. Far from downtown Lake George and no trolley service, charges for early arrival regardless of whether sites is available or not and you can’t sit in their parking arrival area and wait. I would not choose this campground again. It wasn’t horrible. There is so much more they could offer for their resort prices that they charge. Drove through Lake George RV resort on Rt. 149 and I think I’d choose that campground next time. Check out the boats you ride on Lake George! The Adirondack is dog friendly! Get the coupon at the arcade for $3 off the $25 cost. Frontier Town gift shop on Rt 9 with the big teepee out front had great selection of stuff for good prices. Northway Brewing was fun with good beer!

    Caroga Lake Campground

    Overall, nice.

We spent a relatively quiet long weekend here on loop F 97, which is a bit removed from the main campground. It was a bit noisy on Saturday night but nothing disturbing.  This site also is bordered by a small stream so expect mosquitoes and the occasional visit from wildlife (we had raccoons at our site each night, so kept food in the car). Each site has a fire pit and a picnic table.

There is a store just outside the entrance that sells ice, wood, groceries.  There are quite a few roadside firewood sellers that are reasonably priced.  The fire pit does not have a narrow grilling grate so bringing something to ensure your food won't fall through the widely spaced bars is helpful.

As I said, our site was out of the main population, but it was a bit of a hike to the restroom which is something to keep in mind if you've really got to get to a bathroom first thing in the morning.

There is a Walmart about 10 miles away in Gloverville, so keep this in mind if you are planning on picking up essentials when you arrive.

There are no sites with electric.

    Lake Taghkanic State Park Campground

    Great Spot!

Big and spacious state park with many camping options. Has options for trailers, tent sites, platforms for tents and even some cabins. Small store in park that sells firewood and ice and a few other things you may need. Big lake with swimming and boating as well as many hiking trails. Bathrooms on site as well as showers. Some sites are close together, but there are a few a little more secluded and set back. Fire pits are great. Can’t wait to camp here again!

    Beautiful for fall foliage

This campground was great. Quiet, great fire pits, clean bathrooms, firewood and starter for sale plus access to day use area. The lake next to the campground is beautiful and has plenty of picnic tables and grills for use. Close to hiking trails and the city of Bennington.

    Moose Hillock Camping Resorts

Great campsite, great pool. Cafe service is horrendous. Preachy.

    The goods:

Campsites are the largest and most private I've ever seen. Fantastic. Good privacy.

Dunno why others are complaining about the 3 rocks as a fire pit. Plenty functional and directs the heat out towards the seating area.

The pool is as good as it looks in the pictures. Your kids will be here every day and love it. The deepest the pool gets is around 4 feet. There are 2 slides and they are pretty well monitored.

The check in staff and the store staff are great. Very helpful. The camp store is pretty well stocked.

    The needs improvement:

The café staff are completely incompetent. I went through 3 people to find someone that spoke English. A very basic order of 2 slushies took over 20 minutes and they were both wrong. I watched the same thing happen to the next 4-5 families while my kids drank their slushies. It has a ton of potential but terrible execution. I tried again a day or two later and bought some lunch, it took an hour and the order was wrong.

The playlist at the pool area seems to alternate between Jimmy buffett / Bob marley (great!) and a 5 year old's sunday school religious kid songs (wth??). Super annoying. Combine that with the pamphlets handed out at check-in, it's a little preachy. Save that for church, I'm here to camp, Thank you.

    Moose Hillock Camping Resorts

    Great place to stay

Sites are massive. Even though this is a private campground, each site is like it’s own private oasis with plenty of trees to make you feel like you are camping at most state campgrounds. You are not on top of your neighbor and can actually have some privacy. Great pool (actually boasts the largest heated pool in the Northeast US) and activities. super clean bathrooms and laundry. My only “knock” against is the fire pits. 3 haphazardly arranged rocks does not constitute a legitimate fire area.

    Moreau Lake State Park Campground

    Beautiful State Park

The road to our campsite was paved and in good shape but there were a few tight spots because of the trees that make it tricky for a big rig (Loop A seems to be the best for big-rigs). Great thing about this park is the hiking trails and lake so you don’t even have to leave to the park to enjoy great outdoor recreation. We found it enjoyable just to hang out in the park rather than trying to find things to do in the area. After hiking and paddling, we loved relaxing out at our campsite with a campfire.

Our campsite was spacious but required some maneuvering to avoid scraping trees with our RV. Campsites are spacious, shady, and had good separation between the neighboring sites which we enjoyed. Generators are allowed but not too many people were using them. The few other campers around that used them were mindful of quiet hours. Since it was still a little cool and our windows were closed and we never heard anyone’s generator. The park was not very crowded when we were there, but we can imagine it could get very busy and noisy in the busy summer season. The beach area seems to be a draw for people so the summer camping season is probably packed. The snack bar and gift/supplies shop at the sandy beach area were not open as we were there late in the season. There is also a nice playground for kids to enjoy.

This is dry camping so there are no hook-ups but there are restrooms and shower. Both were clean but the shower fluctuated between lukewarm, hot, and warm during my shower. Oh well, the shower felt good after our active days. There are two pavilions you can rent which are nice if big groups want to gather. Take note that only two pets are allowed per campsite, so plan accordingly if you are a pet owner.

Access is fairly easy, just off I-87, and there are plenty of signs directing you which way to go. Saratoga Springs and Lake George are nearby if you want to explore. We recommend visiting the National Horse Racing Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, if you have time. We would definitely stay here again.

Guide to Newtonville

The area sits at the convergence of two distinct ecological zones, creating diverse terrain for outdoor recreation throughout all four seasons. Winter temperatures typically drop below freezing from December through March, with summer highs averaging in the mid-80s.

What to do

Hiking trails beyond the park: Moreau Lake State Park Campground offers extensive trail networks beyond what's mentioned in most guidebooks. "Over 20 miles in hiking trails, this is one of the nicest parks, I've visited," notes a recent visitor at Moreau Lake State Park Campground.

Winter camping activities: Frosty Acres Campground maintains heated units during winter months. One seasonal camper reports, "You'll have the entire mountain side all to yourself! Snowshoe, cross country ski. Winter campfires. Elevation about 1409 feet. View of the sunrise over the entire valley are awesome."

State forest exploration: October Mountain State Forest provides access to multiple trail systems. A visitor shares, "The park is great if you are traveling and need to pull off the interstate to rest your head and get a shower. The bathrooms were very clean."

What campers like

Private woodsy sites: Taconic State Park's platform tent sites provide stable foundations for equipment. According to a camper, "It had a nice wooded area behind us and felt more private than some of the other sites. The swimming there felt really clean and I loved the dock. Close to great hiking."

Dog-friendly amenities: Lake George RV Park features exceptional pet accommodations. A visitor explains, "Our favorite part was the dog park. I've never seen anything like it and wish we had access to something like this everywhere."

Wildlife encounters: Moreau Lake State Park Campground provides opportunities to observe native species. "The wildlife is fun to look at and it's a great destination year round," mentions one camper about their experience.

What you should know

Seasonal crowd fluctuations: Woodford State Park Campground can get busy during peak periods. One visitor cautions, "If you're looking for a quiet spot maybe don't look here. If you have kids and don't mind them making friends and roaming the campground then this is great!"

Site selection matters: Many campgrounds have significant variation between sites. At October Mountain State Forest, a visitor warns, "What site you get makes all the difference. There are many, I would say most, sites that you feel very exposed and out in the open. Just plopped next to someone on the grass."

Management changes: Some properties have undergone ownership transitions. A camper at Frosty Acres notes, "This campground has come so far in a short time! The new owners complete upgrades every season."

Tips for camping with families

Swimming options: Taconic State Park provides multiple water recreation areas. "2 lifeguarded swimming areas — a kiddie pool and a deep area with floating dock to jump off of," reports one visitor.

Playground availability: Woodford State Park Campground includes facilities specifically for younger campers. A family notes it's "perfect for families! there are tons of different types of campsites with either tent spots, lean tos, and a few (hard to get) cabins."

Entertainment schedule: Check event calendars when booking. A Lake George RV Park visitor shares, "Free shows every night at the playhouse kids loved. Animal shows kept daytime events going strong."

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: October Mountain State Forest Campground requires preparation for uneven terrain. "Some of the sites are very visible and a few are tucked away into the woods with privacy. Most are pretty close to their neighbors," explains an RVer.

Hookup locations: Pay attention to utility placement when selecting sites. At Lake George RV Park, a camper mentions, "The water/electric was positioned perfectly that we could have gotten away with using 5 foot connections."

Yurt camping Newtonville, New York alternatives: For those seeking yurt accommodations near Newtonville, New York, Woodford State Park and October Mountain offer seasonal yurt rentals as alternatives to traditional camping. These semi-permanent structures provide more comfort than tents while maintaining a wilderness experience.
