What to do
Hiking trails with wildlife viewing: Blydenburgh County Park features a 7-mile loop trail around the lake with diverse terrain. "Great park with a nice 7 mile loop around the lake with decent fishing. Lots of horses and dogs on the trail," notes Erik R. The trails are well-marked and maintained throughout the year.
Beach access and swimming: Smith Point County Park provides direct ocean access from campsites. "A short walk from the ocean to the bay, both accessible by walking from your campsite," mentions Ali O. The park maintains separate beach areas for swimming and fishing.
Boating opportunities: Southaven County Park offers rowboat and kayak rentals for exploring the lake. "If you like water activities and hiking, then chances are you will probably like this campground. I rented a rowboat, and used that for a large part of the morning," shares Kari M., adding that they also have kayaks available.
Nature center visits: Hammonasset State Park includes educational facilities for families. "You can ride your bike from your site to the playground, store, beach, local ice cream shop, coffee shop, or our family favorite, meig's point nature center," explains Tiffany T.
What campers like
Secluded camping areas: Cathedral Pines County Park offers more isolated sites away from crowds. "Usually every site has a decent fire pit/grill. Usually quiet, occasional deer. The further camps are very far from facilities and the ones closer to the bathrooms are usually louder/taken up," notes Connor M.
Proximity to local attractions: Wildwood State Park Campground serves as a convenient base for exploring regional points of interest. "There are lots of stores nearby as well as orchards to pick your own fruits. I stayed there one weekend and went to Splish Splash waterpark that's not far away. There is also a Tanger Outlet nearby," explains Giselle P.
Clean facilities: Indian Island County Park maintains well-kept bathrooms and shower areas. "The bathrooms were mostly clean, and the shower was hot," reports Maxime T. Regular maintenance keeps these facilities in good condition throughout the camping season.
Platform tent sites: Some campsites offer raised platforms for tent camping, providing more comfort and better drainage. "This is one of my favorite campgrounds solely because there are platform sites so I can place my tent on a concrete or wooden platform," notes a Wildwood State Park visitor.
What you should know
Site boundaries: Heckscher State Park Campground has unique site layouts that may surprise first-time visitors. "The campsites are designated by printing on the roads and do not have clear boundaries between them," explains Thorin J., adding that "there aren't clear paths to the restroom building so it's not uncommon for people to cut through the edges of sites to get there."
Fire pit policies: Many Suffolk County parks do not provide permanent fire rings at each site. "There are no fire pits on any of the sites, although I learned afterwards that they do allow you to bring your own metal fire pit as long as it is elevated off the ground," shares Ellen C. Some parks offer rental fire pits for a fee.
Reservation requirements: Suffolk County parks typically require a Green Key card for county residents. "Worth buying green key card for resident access. 200 but you'd spend that 4 nights regardless," advises Maria P. Non-residents can still camp but may pay higher fees.
Seasonal pest considerations: Be prepared for insects during summer months. "If your going to be visiting Watch Hill Fire Island Campground, expect to be eaten alive by mosquitoes and horseflies especially close to the water," warns Rosie R., suggesting bringing shelter or canopy with mosquito nets.
Tips for camping with families

Ice cream access: Several campgrounds feature treats for families. "You can get a cup of coffee in the morning and lots of goodies throughout the day," mentions a Wildwood State Park visitor, while Smith Point County Park campers report, "At nite an ice cream truck comes by, you get visits from the nearby deer."
Tips from RVers
