RV sites near Long Beach, New York offer access to New York City while providing overnight accommodations for travelers with recreational vehicles. Most campgrounds in the region operate seasonally, with the majority closing between November and April. The area's flat coastal terrain means most camping options require driving inland or west into New Jersey, where more developed facilities exist for larger vehicles.
What to do
Kayaking on lakes: Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold Township features a small lake for kayaking and canoeing. "Plenty to do over a 2 night stay. Archery, boating, fishing, and hiking. Boat rental rates are acceptable and there are four different styles to choose from," notes Dan W.
Mountain biking: Allaire State Park offers extensive biking trails ranging from beginner to advanced. "Mountain Biking from easy, paved trails to several miles of single track with everything in between. Working village and antique train are available most of the year," explains Beau B.
Visiting Statue of Liberty: The location of Liberty Harbor RV Park provides convenient access to Liberty Island. "Small campground. Sites very close to one another. Close to ferry for downtown and Statue of Liberty. People are very nice and accommodating. More of a stopping place to see the sites," according to Missy S.
Swimming and beach access: Beaver Pond Campground provides lake access during summer months. "The grounds are just steps away from Welch Lake, offering a lifeguard monitored sandy beach which is open during the summer season for swimming, fishing, and small boat craft further out," shares Steve W.
What campers like
Proximity to Manhattan: Beaver Pond Campground offers a forest setting with city access. "About 30 minutes from sleepy hollow and tarrytown NY and only an hour to central park!! Deer running everywhere and surprisingly beautiful and quaint. Free Hot showers in the bathrooms, with plenty of room to change," says Megan B.
Tent platform options: Several campgrounds provide raised platforms for tent camping. "The biggest positive about Beaver Pond is how spread out it was. You definitely feel like you have your own space and are not camping on top of your neighbor. Many of the camping options were on platforms which is especially nice if it recently rained," explains Ethan K.
Spacious wooded sites: Turkey Swamp Park provides pull-through sites with good separation. "This campground has all pull-through sites. Nicely wooded with water and electric. Be sure to bring extra hose because the water spigot is a distance from the electric. Sites are level and well maintained," reports Jean T.
Shaded tent areas: Battle Row Campground offers well-shaded tent sites away from RV areas. "There are 5-7 tent sites. Ours was #59, well shaded and spacious. The playground is new and centrally located. They also have a horseshoe pit," notes katrina M.
What you should know
Transportation challenges: Plan routes carefully when bringing RVs to Liberty Harbor. "Getting in and out of the city is an adventure. Stay right off the highway to avoid the $30 tunnel toll. Follow RV life pro and not Waze," advises Joe R.
Wildlife encounters: Several parks have active wildlife populations, including bears and ticks. "Welcome to Bear Mountain grumbles the park ranger as he sits in complete darkness! He offers us a highlighted map to our site, wishes us a good stay, and gives us the run down on bear activity in the area," reports Steve W.
Off-season availability: Nickerson Beach Park Campground has restricted availability. "This is a small beach campground. Its all but impossible to get an RV spot there from Memorial day to Labor day. Still, it is a clean and well run campground. Easy beach access," explains Michael M.
Cell service considerations: Verizon generally provides the most reliable coverage, but service varies by location. "The laundry was not working properly and ate a good $5 of our quarters. We went to the office where the security guard told us that they cannot do anything and that we would need to come back when the office was open," notes Shawn B.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Battle Row Campground offers family-friendly facilities. "This was my first time camping here and I was amazed at how clean the sites were & quiet the campground was. The camp office workers are SO friendly and helpful. They have shower and restroom facilities, the showers were amazing and also so clean," shares Lexis N.
Pet restrictions: Animal policies vary significantly between parks. "Campsite allows dogs, however, the beach does not. They have a small dog run on the other side of the large beach parking lot. Very clean, friendly employees," reports Theresa G. at Nickerson Beach Park Campground.
Noise considerations: Beaver Pond Campground can become noisy during peak season. "There is a constant buzz in the air of conversation, music, laughter and shrieking toddlers. Quiet time at night is laughable as the enjoyment of being in nature rages on into the early morning," warns Steve W.
Winter family activities: Some parks remain open year-round with seasonal attractions. "We go every year. It has everything the outdoorsman could ask for. Bring your bow and shoot at the hay barrels. Ice skate on the lake in the winter or just enjoy a gorgeous walk in the woods," suggests Patrick M. about Turkey Swamp Park.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Skyline RV Camp offers waterfront and non-waterfront options. "Skyline RV Camp has moved to: 50 Noble St, Brooklyn, NY 11222. The original property location at 2 Oak St was sold and is now private property. There no longer is a waterfront view of the NYC skyline when camping at Skyline RV," warns John T.
Utilities positioning: At Turkey Swamp Park, utility placement requires extra planning. "Sites are level and well maintained. They also allowed us to put the car tent on the same site as a friend's camper. There's a nice lake to kayak or paddle boat on. Each site has a fire pit, picnic table and garbage can," describes Jean T.
Military options: For qualifying personnel, military facilities provide affordable alternatives. "Small campground W/ 8 spaces in the main area and 7 in an adjacent area. All spaces are level concrete With fill hookups and attached concrete patio. Power is at the far back & sewage is in the middle. A longer camper will be parked over the sewage connection," details Jeffrey about NWS Earle RV Park.
Sewer connections: At Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center, unique hookup configurations exist. "Price is great at $45/night. FULL hookups as well. Only annoying thing was the sewer hookup is about 18 inches off the ground so you need to lift the hose when emptying the tanks to ensure it actually fully drains," explains Jessica D.
