Best Cabin Camping near Lake Mohegan, NY

Sebago Cabin Camp in Harriman State Park provides rustic cabins with limited amenities, serving as a step up from tent camping. The cabins lack plumbing and heat but include basic furnishings like cots, refrigerators, and double hot plates. Electricity is available, making them functional for short stays in natural settings. Most cabins contain two rooms with four cots, though larger options exist. One visitor noted, "These do not have plumbing or heat. It is a step up from cabin camping. They also have a beach behind it."

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Jellystone Park Gardiner offers hundreds of cabins with varying amenities, from basic structures to more comfortable accommodations with full hookups. The Camp Glen Gray and West Point FMWR recreation areas provide cabin options suitable for families. Reservations are essential, particularly during summer months when facilities reach capacity. According to a camper at Jellystone Park, "There are literally hundreds of cabins and RV sites. We are in site 136, which is a back in spot. Plenty of room between campers."

Most cabins include beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. The cooking setups vary significantly between locations - some cabins provide only outdoor fire rings with cooking grates while others include double hot plates or refrigerators. Camp stores at larger facilities like Jellystone Park offer basic provisions, though selection may be limited. A visitor to Sebago cabins recommended, "Ignore the hotplate and just cook on a fire out other outdoor set up. Don't expect to swim on site- go to Lake Welch near by!" Firewood is available for purchase at several locations, including Sebago Cabin Camp, where weekend activities like outdoor movies and communal bonfires are regular features during summer months.

    Black Rock State Park Campground

    A nice family friendly campground

This is a nice family friendly campground that makes for easy trips. There are a variety of sites available, from open field sites to more wooded and private areas. The campground also has a lake for swimming, trails for hiking, and some nice quiet areas for fishing. Well maintained bathrooms, with available showers, are also spread throughout the grounds. Not pet friendly unfortunately.

    High Point State Park Campground

    Relaxing and Well-Maintained

Stayed 2 nights and it was really nice. Camping for summer is pretty limited to Sawmill Lake, as the other locations are for groups or winter camping. Camps are secluded from each other and most if not all have an elevated space to put tents or chairs. Each place comes with a lamp hang, a fire pit, and a picnic table. Bathrooms are spaced out. No running water except for pump founded outside of the bathrooms. Toilets are pump flushed. Showers are only located INSIDE High Point State Park, not throughout the campsites, but entry is free for campers. One hiking trail is accessible in Sawmill campground, 3 others are accessible on the road outside of the campground and the rest are located inside the park. When you arrive you have to check in with the park office for your campsite tag. Hours are 8-4. Park officials come through the campsites pretty regularly, a few times a day which is nice. Areas are clean and well maintained.

Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park at Birchwood Acres

    Perfect for families with littles!

Our 21 month old had the time of his life here! We stayed for 3 nights in June in a rustic cabin. There are no bathrooms in the cabin but there are public restrooms nearby. The resorts is decked out with 2 playgrounds, a splash park, kiddie pool, family pool and hot tub. They have activities on the weekends with Yogi the mascot such as wagon rides, dance parties, arts n crafts. It was a little expensive to stay here but was so worth it! Make sure you reserve a golf cart if you stay during the weekend- it's a must have to get from place to place and our little guy loved it!

    Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort

RV and Cabin Rental Only...and a miniature horse!

It is important to note that there is only RV and cabin rentals offered at Pleasant Acre. The grounds are up on top of a mountain and is quite beautiful and quiet. This is a great place to get away and bring your family and dogs. They offer several planned activities for kids and they have nice facilities like a great swimming pool and ping pong. Important to not miss: the amazingly beautiful miniature horse that wonders around its huge pin located in the middle of the campground.

    Croton Point Park

Not the Best Place to Go in the Northeast By a Longshot

Croton Point Campground is a modest little campground, located along the Hudson River within Croton Point Park in NY. In addition to camping, the park itself offers many of its own attractions, including swimming, hiking, kayaking, cabin rentals, and a host of other family-oriented activities just along the Hudson.

The park, which is honestly probably the largest attraction here, is located just an hour and a half outside of the city. This proximity is both its perk and its downfall, as the park itself, but particularly the campground, has become laden with all sorts of inexplicable and burdensome rules, endless guidelines, and restrictions only a New York State-run bureaucracy could ever make sense of, let alone hope to justify.

This includes all manner of restrictions on how you can camp, where you can camp, what equipment can be used, and use in relation to what particular site you may have been lucky enough to reserve. Much of this you can understand while imagining what may have taken place here to bring them to such measures, but it doesn't make it any easier to contend with.

In terms of the actual camping conditions Both the tenting section and RV sites are each very clustered together, and quite crowded, with regular patrols🚓(actual patrols) being made day and night, by both the Park Rangers and what appears to be general park staff members, all looking to see if you or your family might be doing something that they might consider outside of the guidelines or not in compliance with the many restrictions.

This is not to say you can't possibly have a good time here. It just might mean being a bit more diligent toward reviewing the potential legitimacy of your normal camping routine to ensure it meets with many restrictions and guidelines imposed, while also making yourself comfortable with some fairly regular surveillance during your stay here. These all being things we hoped to get away from while camping ourselves It just turned out to be a bit much for our particular liking.

    Kittatinny Campground

    Great for camping

Not much to do around the park except walk around. We went on opening day so there weren’t many campers- maybe like 4 or 5. The people in the store were very friendly and the grounds were clean. There was Wi-Fi available but it did not work at all- so be prepared to use your satellite or go off grid since cell service was unavailable or minimum. We had a beautiful view of the river though while camping and enjoyed the trip. The river sites were gravel and level which was nice to not have mud when we got out since it rained all weekend. Electric hookup was good- we did not use the water hookup, but it was available. They have cable boxes, but no cable offered.

    Mahlon Dickerson Reservation

    Great little campground

Mahlon Dickerson Campground is a true gem. It is a small campground nestled in the woods. There are level padded sites with electric and water (in warmer months). Sites were spaced out with beautiful woods in the background. Hiking trail goes right through the campground. There is a bathroom with showers that is heated in the colder months. There is a water spigot at the bathrooms to fill up your water tanks. Dump station also on site. Each site has a nice picnic table and fire ring. I really enjoyed this campground and would go back again.

Guide to Lake Mohegan

Cabins near Lake Mohegan provide rustic to modern accommodations within the Hudson Valley region of New York. Located approximately 50 miles north of New York City, this area features mixed hardwood forests at elevations ranging from 400-1,300 feet. Summer temperatures average 75-85°F during day with significant cooling at night, making cabin camping comfortable even during peak season.

What to do

Swimming and water access: Croton Point Park features a swimming area with buoys and lifeguard supervision during designated hours. "Clean park with a place to swim but only within buoys and when a life guard is present," notes Isabel L., though swimmers should check water quality reports as bacteria levels occasionally restrict access.

Fall foliage viewing: Mills Norrie State Park Campground offers exceptional autumn views of the Hudson River Valley. "We spent two separate weekends at this campground; one during October and the other during early May. Camping here during October was, by far, better. The foliage was turned to all hues of orange, yellow, green, and red," reports Larissa C.

Halloween celebrations: Consider October visits for seasonal festivities. "We came in October to celebrate Halloween in sleepy hollow! This is a great campsite and reasonably priced. Was close to bear mountains state part and the train station is right there!" explains Wendy C. about Croton Point Park.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: The Stephen & Betsy Corman AMC Harriman Outdoor Center offers well-spaced camping platforms. "I camped on one of the platforms, which was very nice and did not feel crowded even with other people on neighboring platforms," reports Ilya F.

Clean facilities: Military families appreciate the upkeep at West Point FMWR Round Pond Outdoor Recreation Area. "Bath houses are absolutely spotless. Fire pits, electric and water hook ups only. Will return! Staff is friendly and helpful. Military families should check it out!" states Mindie C.

Family activities: Jellystone Park Gardiner focuses on structured entertainment for children. "This campground has a lot of activities and has kids of all ages galore. I was worried my 12 year old would be too old for it but he enjoyed making friends there," mentions Stephanie H.

What you should know

Military-only access: Some cabin facilities near Lake Mohegan restrict access to military personnel. "Unfortunately for me, Round Pond is camping reserved for active and retired military personnel only. We drove through and the whole space is rather large. There are several signs everywhere making it clear that it is only for military," explains Ethan K.

Varying bathroom quality: Facilities vary significantly between locations. "The bathrooms needed updating and people at the tent area made a comment that it took a while to get a turn at the showers," notes Stephanie H. about Jellystone Park Gardiner.

Noise considerations: Croton Point Park can experience evening disruptions. "The site was very loud (dance music) until after 11pm. Quiet time at 10pm. Great site for a party, try to stay away from this end of the site or choose a site away from other bookings if you'd like quite," advises Jonathan C.

Tips for camping with families

First-timer friendly cabins: Sebago Cabin Camp offers an accessible entry point for inexperienced campers. "We were able to rent a cabin which was equipped with an outside grill and picnic area. It is great if you are going with a group/family and people want to sleep inside a cabin as oppose to a tent outside," explains Ethan K.

Wildlife observation opportunities: Kids enjoy the animal encounters at Croton Point Park. "Clean park with a place to swim but only within buoys and when a life guard is present. Only one or two bathrooms in the whole place so be prepared to go for a walk when you have to go... On the bright side, there are lots of bunnies!" shares Isabel L.

Meal planning options: Kettletown State Park Campground offers flexibility for family meals. "We love this State Park because it's close to our home for a quick getaway... It's quiet, clean, and exactly what we were looking for in a weekend. Close to Southford Falls for a nice hike and waterfall views," reports Kristin.

Tips from RVers

Site selection considerations: At Croton Point Park, RV sites have specific layouts. "The FHU sites were back-to-back and although there were trees separating the sites, they were close together," notes Lee D.

Group camping arrangements: Space for multiple vehicles is available at Mills Norrie State Park. "The sites were spacious enough to allow for two cars each and probably 3 tents each (saw this at one site). Rangers running the place were pleasant and informative," shares Rebecca Y.

Reservation processes: Some parks have unique booking systems. "The reservation process is a bit wonky. You need to call (no online reservations) and then wait for an e-mail, but the e-mail does not tell you your assigned site; you have to wait until you check in to find out your site," explains Lee D. about Mills Norrie State Park.
