What to do
Water recreation on Schroon River: Kayak or canoe from Lake George Riverview Campground where you'll find convenient river access. "The river is the attraction at this Campground that provides hours of entertainment. If you are looking for a resort campground with lots of amenities this may not be the campground for you, but if you want a clean beautiful spot on a beautiful river convenient to Bolton's Landing & Lake George Village you will love it here," explains one visitor.
Hiking nearby trails: Moreau Lake State Park Campground connects to over 20 miles of trail networks. "I love the spacious campsites. It's very woodsy between sites, so it seems very private. Bathrooms and Showers are clean. Over 20 miles in hiking trails, this is one of the nicest parks, I've visited," notes a camper. The trails range from easy lake loops to more challenging climbs.
Cycling on regional paths: Access the Warren County Bikeway directly from King Phillip's Campground for car-free riding. "We road the bike path each day to and from Lake George. It was downhill on the way there and a little bit of an uphill battle on the way back but totally worth it! Bring your bikes!!" recommends one reviewer. The paved path stretches 9 miles toward Glens Falls.
What campers like
Private campsites: Moose Hillock Camping Resorts offers unusually spacious sites with natural barriers. "The sites at this park are huge. You could have parked three RVs in our site. Added bonus is that there is nice separation between sites with trees and shrubs that block out your neighbors and provide lots of privacy," describes one camper. Most sites include full hookups with custom fire pits.
Clean facilities: Ledgeview Village RV Park maintains spotless bathhouses and grounds. "The place was packed but you wouldn't know it. So peaceful. The pool was very cold but spotless, which was surprising since there's pine trees all around," notes a visitor. The campground regularly cleans shared spaces multiple times daily.
Yurt camping Lake Luzerne, New York: Alternative accommodations are available at several campgrounds. Lake George Escape Campground offers yurt rentals with sturdy canvas sides and wooden frames. "We stayed in a tent was gorgeous! We fit 5 of us comfortably. Linens, blankets and pillows were provided. There was a fire pit, BBQ, picnic table with umbrella, covered platform, and a partition between campsites," explains one happy yurt camper.
What you should know
Road noise: Some campgrounds experience highway sounds from nearby I-87. At Lake George Campsites, "The Northway was directly to the west, maybe 1000 ft through the woods, extremely loud traffic noise." Another camper noted, "It's hard to have a conversation without the need to shout or repeat what you said over the traffic. It doesn't die down overnight."
Swimming options: Most campgrounds feature swimming pools or lake access with variable quality. During peak season, pool areas at Lake George RV Park get busy. "There is a trolley to get around the camp ground as well as to the local outlets. Fun family activities and quite a few pools to relax in," mentions one visitor.
Seasonal variations: Early or late season visits mean different amenities may be closed. "We were there in May (which is early in the season) so not all the amenities were open. Essentially, we were paying for things we did not use," notes one camper at Alpine Lake RV Resort.
Tips for camping with families
Look for dedicated kid spaces: Playgrounds and recreation areas keep children entertained. One visitor to Lake George Escape Campground shared, "There are plenty of outdoor activities to do such as swimming, tubing, kayaking, sports, and bike rentals. They had a gift shop and arcade on site as well."
Bathroom proximity matters: Choose sites near bathroom facilities when camping with young children. At Moreau Lake State Park, "The sites are shady and close together, but still feel fairly private. We enjoyed the hiking trails and beach while camping, then went further north for the full ADK experience."
Consider timing: Weekdays typically offer quieter camping experiences with fewer crowds. "The park was not very crowded when we were there, but we can imagine it could get very busy and noisy in the busy summer season. The beach area seems to be a draw for people so the summer camping season is probably packed," observed a camper.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Research specific sites before booking. "The campground is very spread out so if you want to be near the pool/entertainment area or nearby bathrooms, pick your site accordingly," advises an RVer who stayed at Moose Hillock Camping Resorts.
Leveling challenges: Bring leveling blocks for uneven terrain. "Nice state campground, very clean, nice staff. Sites are spacious, shady, and had good separation between the neighboring sites which we enjoyed," commented a visitor at Moreau Lake State Park Campground.
Beware narrow roads: Some campgrounds have tight access roads requiring careful navigation. "Roads in the park are confusing because none are parallel or perpendicular so we had to go slow just to make sure we didn't miss a turn in the RV," notes an RV owner who visited Lake George RV Park.
