Suffolk County offers several dog friendly campgrounds near Islip Terrace with varying amenities and terrain. Campgrounds in this region typically require advance reservations during peak season from May through September. The coastal location means campers experience moderate temperatures year-round, with summer highs around 85°F and winter temperatures rarely dropping below 30°F.
What to do
Beach access for dogs: At Smith Point County Park, campers can enjoy both ocean and bay views. "Short walk to beach. 1 minute walk over the dune to the Atlantic ocean," reports Michael, who appreciated having water access so close to camp.
Lake activities: Southaven County Park offers water recreation beyond ocean beaches. "They have quite a few water activities and hiking trails nearby. I rented a rowboat, and used that for a large part of the morning. They also have some kayaks available to rent," notes one visitor.
Hiking with dogs: Multiple hiking trails accommodate leashed pets throughout parks in Suffolk County. One camper at Wildwood State Park Campground mentioned, "You have to buy a stargazing permit to be out on the beach after sunset, which helps prevent hooligans from taking over the beach."
What campers like
Natural surroundings: The wooded sites at Cathedral Pines create a secluded atmosphere. "The group camping on the fox sites is accessible by a dirt drive in. I felt like I was suddenly transported upstate when in fact I had only driven 2 towns over," wrote Linda about Blydenburgh County Park.
Wildlife viewing: Campers frequently encounter local wildlife. "At nite an ice cream truck comes by, you get visits from the nearby deer. It is paradise," notes Tim about his experience at Smith Point County Park. Another camper mentioned seeing "deer, rabbits, turtles" at a nearby location.
Multiple camping options: Watch Hill Fire Island Campground provides backcountry options. "You can get a permit to backcountry camp instead of reserving a designated campground spot. Just walk down to the beach after check-in and walk east until you see a pole with a tent symbol on it," explains Emily.
What you should know
Insect preparation: Mosquitoes present a significant challenge, particularly at waterfront sites. "Mosquitoes are vicious," warned Pedro about Watch Hill. Another camper advised: "Be prepared for ticks. Very wooded," regarding Southaven County Park.
Site selection considerations: Many campgrounds feature open sites with limited privacy. At Indian Island County Park, "All the camping spots are pretty much right next to each one with hardly any space, packed like Sardines," according to Prashant.
Fire ring requirements: Several parks don't provide fire rings at campsites. "No fire pits on any of the sites, although they do allow you to bring your own metal fire pit as long as it is elevated off the ground," noted one reviewer. Another mentioned: "I would just bring your own."
Tips for camping with families
Beach proximity: Choose oceanside sites for easier beach access with children. "The beach was within walking distance, lots of little trails, and plenty of activities for the whole family. The park rangers on site have excellent programs for kids," reports a camper at Indian Island.
Playground access: Several campgrounds feature dedicated play areas. "Perfect place to take the little ones has a beautiful lake and a really nice playground," writes Correl about Southaven County Park.
Seasonal activities: Check for special events when booking. At Smith Point County Park, one camper mentioned: "It also happened to be Trick or Treat weekend on the campground which really fun to see."
Tips from RVers
Access routes: Larger rigs should plan routes carefully to avoid parkway restrictions. "I drove down from Connecticut to Long Island to find the main routes to the campsite all went through New York's parkways. There are height restrictions on the parkways so RVs and semis cannot travel on them," warns Matt from Nickerson Beach Park.
Hookup availability: For full service camping, Smith Point County Park offers comprehensive amenities. "Our 36ft motorhome backed up to a raised balcony overlooking the bay. Less than 100 feet from the front of our site was the beach and the Atlantic Ocean view," Patrick describes.
Site leveling: Blydenburgh Park offers level sites suitable for RVs. "Very clean campgrounds lots of space," reports Maria, who recommended purchasing a green key card for resident access, noting "200 but you'd spend that 4 nights regardless."
