Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Castile, NY

Letchworth State Park Campground near Castile offers pet-friendly camping in dedicated dog loops with a two-dog limit per site. Most sites in the pet-designated areas provide standard amenities including picnic tables, fire rings, and access to hiking trails where leashed dogs are welcome. Recent bathroom and shower facility updates have improved the camping experience, though pet loop reservations fill quickly during peak season. Woodstream Campsite and Four Winds Campground also accommodate pets with spacious sites where dogs can enjoy the natural surroundings. The grounds are well-maintained with grassy tent sites appreciated by families camping with dogs.

    Letchworth State Park Campground

    30+ years of great memories!

We have camped at Letchworth State Park for nearly 30 years. Recent updates to playground equipment and restroom/shower facilities have brought the amenities into the 21st century. The price is reasonable, and the park is a gem. A couple cons to consider: pets only allowed in three loops. Quite often, pet loop reservations are maxed quickly. There is a two dog limit, which excludes many campers. If you are used to private campgrounds, realize that services are limited here. Mediocre camp store and laundry; both get the job done, but leave a lot to be desired.

    Letchworth State Park, NY

Letchworth State Park is known as the Grand Canyon of the East and is located in Mt. Morris New York. My husband and I visited regularly when we lived near Rochester, NY. The park is stunning and is fit for camping whether you’re in a tent, RV or choosing to rent a gorgeous cabin. There are many walking and hiking trails for adventurers of all types. Make sure you bring your camera as the views are all photo worthy. The camping price is right due to the fact that the park is run by the state. A great place to stay especially in the Summer!!

    Shamrock Pines Campground

    Clean and friendly

Called up on Friday afternoon of Labor Day weekend and they accommodated us for two nights.  John and his staff were friendly and welcoming.  Very clean campground with mostly seasonal sites.  Several overnight sites with electric and water.  These sites were mostly gravel and cut into a bank so that there is some separation.  Surrounded by trees but grounds are well kept.  Fully fenced dog park that was great for our pup.  A couple of ponds for kids to fish and what looks like a nice pool.  Quiet hours observed.  On Saturday night there was a band in an outdoor stage that was great.

Close enough to Ellicottville to enjoy the shops, brewery and restaurants there.

Only thing I would mention is the dump station is simply just a pipe off one of the driveways with a water hose.  Not a problem and it works, just not typical of dump stations.

    Letchworth State Park Campground

    Good weekend campsite

Not technically in the Finger Lakes but still one of the most beautiful parts of Western New York State. Splurge and eat at the Glen Iris Inn! Great for cycling and hiking but no swimming. I love taking visitors here in all seasons but in autumn it is exceptional. I’ve stayed in a few tent sites and all are wooded and pretty private with your standard basic amenities. This is a popular park so make reservations.

The Grand Canyon of the East!

I went to college right near Letchworth State Park so I spent many wonderful weekends there! There is a reason why they call it the Grand Canyon of the East. Not only can you check out the beautiful waterfalls, but there are also many awesome trails, rivers, and caves to check out. When I would camp, we would rent a camp site with our tent but, you could camp with your RV or even rent a cabin. Ive gone every month of the year, but these pictures were from my birthday in January. Letchworth is one of the best parks in New York state and a definite must see!

    Letchworth State Park Campground

    Letchworth State Park

My son and I have a new favorite campground.  We absolutely fell in love with this park.  I find it odd that even though I grew up only an hour away, we never camped there.  Big mistake!  There are many trails to hike on and beautiful views of the gorge and river.  You have to drive to many of the places but it's worth it.  There are many souvenir and snack stands as well as a pool (again, you have to drive to them).  The camp store is small but well stocked with a laundry attached. Some loops allow pets and others don't.  If you want to bring your pet, please check to make sure you reserve a pet-friendly loop. Unfortunately for us, it rained the entire time we were there so we never got to walk the trails or use the pool.  Keep an eye out for other activities.  There are balloon rides, craft shows, etc. that happen throughout the summer. With so much to do in the park, you don't really need to leave but nearby is the Arcade and Attica Railroad.  It's a nice little ride through the countryside.  There is also a small dam that you can visit (we missed out this last time).  I highly recommend visiting.

    Nice and quiet

ntmnet. Overall, this is a nice place to go camping. We camp in a tent and our site was wonderful (PT1). We were pretty much alone. The facility was nice and kept up. The bathrooms were clean and well stocked. My only complaint would be that the pet rules are not enforced. I would see five dogs from my site and only one was on a leash all the time. My dog. One dog was free to roam wherever it wanted. Owners would walk with him and let him go. He came to our site several times. We did our best to keep our dog quiet but it was difficult. The dog ended up taking "a dump" on our site. The owners had not intention of cleaning it up till I talked to them when they walked by. They sent a child who didn't clean it toroughly so I had to. Called the office but no answer. Never saw an employee making rounds checking things out. Not going back.

Guide to Castile

Letchworth State Park sits at elevations ranging from 600 to 950 feet above sea level near Castile, New York. The park follows the Genesee River gorge with cliff faces reaching up to 550 feet in height. Late summer temperatures average 70-80°F during the day, making camping comfortable even in basic tent sites without electrical hookups.

What to do

Hiking at Stony Brook: Hike through the gorge trail system at Stony Brook State Park Campground where visitors can see multiple waterfalls in a single trek. "The gorge trail is very busy but you still can enjoy the beautiful waterfalls along with the gorge formation. We also did the east trail that goes up to the top of the gorge and is also a little further into the woods. It was much quieter up there and the views looking down from there were breathtaking."

Fishing opportunities: Cast a line at The Ridge Campsite's multiple fishing ponds, which are regularly stocked for campers. "They have plenty to do with multiple fishing ponds, swimming pool and playgrounds. They have a nice little store for necessities and a snack shop."

Natural swimming: Cool off at Woodstream Campsite where creek access provides natural swimming spots. "One of the coolest things was rafting on the creek! There was also mini golf and multiple playgrounds. A lot of the sites were right on the creek. The scenery was beautiful."

Winter camping options: Experience off-season camping at Darien Lakes State Park Campground with lean-to shelters available along the Conservation Trail. "We did some winter camping here. We backpacked into the lean to along the Conservation Trail. It was in good condition and we had a large clearing for activities."

Tips from RVers

Road access challenges: Access to some pet-friendly camping near Castile requires careful navigation. "Driveway getting in and out is a little tight for big units, definitely have to swing wide. Sites are very big and clean."

Site leveling: Many campgrounds offer level sites but variations exist. "Wooden size of nicely spaced and level."

Hookup considerations: Beaver Meadow Family Campground offers full hookup sites with some positioning limitations. "The positives to this campground are that the people running it are all very nice. The store has just about anything and everything you can need or want. Restrooms and showers are kept clean. Negatives are that most of the sites with full hook-ups are practically on top of each other."

Water pressure variations: Be prepared for fluctuating utilities at some locations. "Water pressure was low at times and there are no threads on the sewer connection but rocks work."
