Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Belmont, NY

Palmers Pond State Forest provides free dispersed camping with multiple pet-friendly sites around a scenic pond and wooded areas. The grassy terrain under pines offers abundant flat areas for tents, with established fire pits and picnic tables but no hookups or facilities. Pets are allowed throughout the camping areas with typical dispersed camping etiquette expected. Evergreen Trails Campground accommodates pets at their tent sites, RV spots with electric hookups, and cabin rentals. The campground features full hookups for RVs, drinking water, showers, toilets, and a camp store where firewood can be purchased. Sites are spaced far enough apart that noise from neighboring campers isn't usually a problem, with the more wooded sites offering additional privacy for campers with pets.

Access to Palmers Pond requires careful navigation, as several reviewers note GPS often leads to a dead end. Visitors should enter from the north entrance via Turnpike Road to South Road rather than taking Palmers Pond Road. The dispersed camping follows Leave No Trace principles with no services available, requiring campers to pack out all pet waste and trash. Trout Run Camp Resort provides additional pet-friendly options with amenities including a saltwater pool, tubing on the river, and activities for families. Sugar Creek Glen Campground allows camping with dogs across their sites and provides poop bags for pets, though tent campers should note they'll need to cross a creek to access tent-only sites, requiring vehicles with higher clearance. The sites are level and spacious among trees, with some tent sites positioned along the water.

    Very Nice CG!

Just off US 15 at the New York border. All roads and parking pads are paved. The sites are closer together than most other COE parks where we’ve stayed. We stayed in the Bench Loop which is very busy since it is waterfront. Our first week, we were on site 54 (W/E 50A) and waterfront. Our second week, we stayed on site 44 (FHU 50A) right across from the seldom used playground. Quite wooded here but we managed to get satellite TV. No Verizon phone service and very slow internet with a booster. This area is pretty with rolling hills all around so we enjoyed a couple of scenic drives. About an hour away is the Pine Creek Rail Trail in the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon.

    Letchworth State Park Campground

    30+ years of great memories!

We have camped at Letchworth State Park for nearly 30 years. Recent updates to playground equipment and restroom/shower facilities have brought the amenities into the 21st century. The price is reasonable, and the park is a gem. A couple cons to consider: pets only allowed in three loops. Quite often, pet loop reservations are maxed quickly. There is a two dog limit, which excludes many campers. If you are used to private campgrounds, realize that services are limited here. Mediocre camp store and laundry; both get the job done, but leave a lot to be desired.

    Letchworth State Park, NY

Letchworth State Park is known as the Grand Canyon of the East and is located in Mt. Morris New York. My husband and I visited regularly when we lived near Rochester, NY. The park is stunning and is fit for camping whether you’re in a tent, RV or choosing to rent a gorgeous cabin. There are many walking and hiking trails for adventurers of all types. Make sure you bring your camera as the views are all photo worthy. The camping price is right due to the fact that the park is run by the state. A great place to stay especially in the Summer!!

    Austin Campground

    Tucked Away Gem

Found this location while going to Elk State Forest for the elk bugling. Was very happy to find this location. Had clean bathrooms with running water and showers. Campground was tucked away between two mountains and sat next to a creek. Staff was friendly. Plenty of camp sites. Have yearly campsites which is apparent since some of the campers have more permanent structures around or attached to them. Pets allowed. Not the best place for hammock camping but have a few sites with good trees. Out of the main path but nice place to stay.

    Shamrock Pines Campground

    Clean and friendly

Called up on Friday afternoon of Labor Day weekend and they accommodated us for two nights.  John and his staff were friendly and welcoming.  Very clean campground with mostly seasonal sites.  Several overnight sites with electric and water.  These sites were mostly gravel and cut into a bank so that there is some separation.  Surrounded by trees but grounds are well kept.  Fully fenced dog park that was great for our pup.  A couple of ponds for kids to fish and what looks like a nice pool.  Quiet hours observed.  On Saturday night there was a band in an outdoor stage that was great.

Close enough to Ellicottville to enjoy the shops, brewery and restaurants there.

Only thing I would mention is the dump station is simply just a pipe off one of the driveways with a water hose.  Not a problem and it works, just not typical of dump stations.

    Letchworth State Park Campground

    Good weekend campsite

Not technically in the Finger Lakes but still one of the most beautiful parts of Western New York State. Splurge and eat at the Glen Iris Inn! Great for cycling and hiking but no swimming. I love taking visitors here in all seasons but in autumn it is exceptional. I’ve stayed in a few tent sites and all are wooded and pretty private with your standard basic amenities. This is a popular park so make reservations.

What to do

Waterfall exploration: Stony Brook State Park Campground offers multiple hiking trails with waterfalls for camping visitors. A camper notes, "The gorge trail is very busy but you still can enjoy the beautiful waterfalls along with the gorge formation. We also did the east trail that goes up to the top of the gorge and is also a little further into the woods." The park features a natural swimming area carved from the mountain.

Creek hiking and swimming: Sugar Creek Glen Campground provides access to creek-based activities. A visitor reported, "We were able to hike and climb up to more falls and swimming holes when the creek level came down one day. Other days we couldn't due to high creek levels." Another camper shared, "Amazing miles of upstream hiking, water holes, rope swings, etc. Perfect for little kids and adults."

Fishing and wildlife observation: Palmers Pond State Forest offers pond fishing opportunities in a quiet setting. A camper observed, "Lots of beavers to watch throughout the day," while enjoying the peaceful surroundings. The pond provides habitat for various wildlife and fish species accessible from the dispersed camping areas.

What campers like

Natural swimming areas: Letchworth State Park Campground provides outdoor recreation beyond hiking trails. A visitor described it as "spectacular" and recommended "Bring the charcoal and bbq lunch, both picnic tables and grills available. Great hikes in this area as well as a nice swimming hole." The park contains multiple day-use areas for picnicking near water features.

Privacy between sites: Evergreen Trails Campground offers secluded camping experiences. One camper noted, "If you are looking for a deep woods experience... this is it! The scenery was absolute beautiful but we were given the last open tent spot available. You crossed a small foot bridge to get to it. There was very little grass because it was deeply wooded." The woodsy setting provides natural separation between campsites.

Seasonal activities: Stony Brook State Park Campground supports various outdoor pursuits through different seasons. A visitor shared, "We picked blueberries off a bush near our campsite to have with our breakfast every morning." The park's diverse vegetation provides seasonal foraging opportunities alongside traditional camping activities.

What you should know

Navigation challenges: Palmers Pond State Forest requires specific directions to avoid dead ends. A camper warns, "Place was incredible! I drove out from Wisconsin and was the only on there. Threw up the tentsile tent over looking the pond on the south side. What a wonderful way to wake up. ⚠️Side note TAKE WEST ALMOND road as the other road is blocked off⚠️." Another visitor advises, "If the lake spots are busy check the woods, there are a bunch more nice spots."

Vehicle requirements: Sugar Creek Glen Campground has terrain that demands appropriate vehicles for some areas. A reviewer cautions, "Just be advised that if you plan to camp with just a tent you will have to cross a creek to do it, so make sure to have an elevated, AWD/4x4 car or truck to help with the process." This access requirement is particularly important during periods of higher water.

Weather impacts: Trout Run Camp Resort experiences seasonal weather effects. A camper reported, "Initially we booked site 97. Upon arrival we found out that 97 is no longer a camp site. We were moved to site 14 thankfully they had one spot available for a fully booked weekend." Weather conditions can affect site availability and access to water activities.

Tips for camping with families

Playground amenities: Trout Run Camp Resort offers multiple family-friendly facilities. A visitor detailed, "Lots of things to do for young ones; heated pool, splash pad, pickleball court, basketball hoops and Gaga ball court. Opportunity to rent kayaks, bikes and golf carts." These amenities provide entertainment options beyond traditional camping activities.

Dog friendly campgrounds near Belmont: Letchworth State Park Campground welcomes families with pets in designated areas. A camper described it as "Quiet relaxing atmosphere, lots of hiking trails and family friendly with parks and a pool for the kids to play." The combination of pet-friendly policies and family amenities makes this a versatile option.

A visitor shared, "There is natural clay which my children used to make clay pots which air dried on the grass by our playground." The natural environment provides creative play opportunities alongside standard campground amenities.

Tips from RVers

Hookup options: Evergreen Trails Campground provides various site types. One RVer mentioned, "I wish I had know the more wooded sites were water and electric. I had full hookup so it was kinda open for my liking. Enjoyed it tho!" Site selection affects both utility access and privacy levels.

Power reliability: Houghton/Letchworth KOA provides electric service with some limitations. A camper noted, "Water pressure was low at times and there are no threads on the sewer connection but rocks work 😁👍. Centerville road to the campground is narrow and hilly but if you take your time it's not too bad." Access roads may present challenges for larger rigs.

Pet-friendly options near Belmont: Sugar Creek Glen Campground accommodates dogs with practical amenities. A reviewer confirmed, "This was a great campground.
