    Fort Drum Recreation Area

    A beautiful place to stay

With my family and pets in tow, we took a weekend and committed it to nature and ourselves. Remington is a Military campground, but for the several military families looking to disconnect a couple of miles from home this would be it.

They offer regular camping sites and RV sites, they also have a dog park for the little furry ones.

It is easy to get to and several forms of outdoor entertainment.. Remington is a b autiful well kept place and I could spend my summer there.

    Delta Lake State Park Campground

    Delta Lake State Park

Delta Lake State Park sits at the foothills of the Adirondack Park, just outside Rome, New York. Pretty and well-kempt, Delta Lake is a nice option for those looking to stay close to home and within proximity to civilization. You can enjoy the great outdoors, while only being a few miles away from a restaurant or grocery store.

The campground isn‘t the best I’ve experienced, a bit on the crowded side-similar to a woodsy suburb- but this could have been distinctive to Loop A where I stayed. I stayed in site 35 and was intermixed with all the campers and RV’s, so it got a bit noisy. Not that restful, secluded experience I typically go for, but I should have planned further in advance.

However, what the park lacked in terms of its campground, it totally made up for in its beach, swimming and picnic areas! This place was awesome for hosting a birthday party for my niece and relaxing at the beach/ day facilities. They have plenty of picnic tables, charcoal grills, a huge beach and locker rooms. This is really a great place to spend a day with your family!

Yogi Bears Jellystone Park Camp Resort at Mexico

    Great Salmon fishing....Mexico NY

This is our 4th experience at a Jellystone. The campground was clean and staff was super nice. Organized the Halloween activities nicely. Yogi and the characters were very involved. For the fisherman, it's located on Salmon River and appears to have quite a lot of large salmon this time of year. I was shocked at the size of the fish that were being cleaned. My husband believes that area of the river was a private sector for the campground. Smaller campground than others I have been too but made it nice for kids to rides bikes safely since there weren't golf carts located at this campground. What I didn't enjoy as much. 1) The sites were muddy, especially when it had recently rained. Luckily we came after it rained and it had dried out some. 2) the dog park was a walking area, not a fenced in yard for them to let some of their energy out 3) No sewer hookups available but does had a dump station on your way out.

    Southwick Beach State Park Campground

Great part with tons of beach

There is TONS of beach to explore at this little State Park in New York. I used to visit here as a kid years ago because my grandparents owned a cottage on the lake. Since they sold it, visiting Southwick is the next best thing. Lake Ontario is an amazing lake to be on and the water is pretty warm in the summer time. the waves don't get too big, so it is very safe for kids. Southwick itself has great camping spots right next to the beach. It is a little pricey if you only want to visit for the day, $8, but you can get a tent spot for $18 which is comparable to other state parks. Showers are available, and there are some short trails that are good for running or probably cross country skiing in the winter. There is also a sizable playground near the beach that is great for the kids.

    Wellesley Island State Park Campground

crowded. fine if you're spending your days on the water

We came to this campground after a week in Algonquin Provincial park in Canada and the contrast couldn't have been greater. Up north we stayed on a large, shady site in a radio free loop and everyone had canoes. In New York we had a cramped, open site and everyone seemed to have a motorboat on a trailer. Our neighbors across the road set up a movie screen . The overall feel was NOT "getting away from it all".
The facilities are good and there's a nice beach and well stocked General store, also a big boat ramp facility with some docks.
We chose this location because we were attending the Antique Boat Show in Clayton, 13 miles away, and this was the closest available. It suited us just fine for that.
Keep your stuff secure, there are brazen raccoons.

    Green Lakes State Park Campground

Green Lakes is a model state park

This is a great example of what a state park should be. It not only preserves a place of unique biological diversity and geologic interest, it is also well set up and well maintained to maximize low impact outdoor recreation and environmental education. A new state of the art regional environmental education center is being built now that will open in spring, as well as new handicapped access kayaking docks that complement Accessible trails and campsites throughout the park. This is a great destination for families, handicapped campers, and natural history enthusiasts. There are several campgrounds, one is large and open and meant for large RVs, others are drive-in forested tent sites or trailer sites with hookups, and several walkin sites. There is also a colony of rustic camper cabins. The campgrounds have brand new restroom facilities and playgrounds, and the main lake has a new beach house. The lake is a fascinating meromictic lake with clear calcium-rich waters that are not only pristine and beautiful to look at, but also great for swimming and snorkeling as the waters are crystal clear and very deep. There are hiking trails, paved bike trails, a nature preserve for bird watching at Round Lake, a golf course, and great kayaking or canoeing. It is also located right next door to the Erie Canal State Park for those who want to hike or bike the historic Erie Canal. Though you might expect a park like this to be in a remote location, it is actually just a short distance east of the suburbs of the Syracuse metro area, so it is an easy park to get to, plus staying there also provides easy access to stores for supplies, or access to local cultural activities or restaurants for those who want that. One of my favorite state parks in New York!

    Oneida Shores County Park

Campground was great, other patrons…not so much

My husband and I camped here from 6/17/22 - 6/19/22.

We had a great and relaxing time until Saturday evening when the three dogs at a neighboring site all slipped their collars and began running around the campground growling and charging at other patrons. One of them came at myself and my parents who were visiting. I absolutely came very close to being bit by a dog that was trying to charge at my mother but my husband intervened and began swinging a hot dog poker at the dog which caused it to bolt towards a campsite that had multiple little kids at it.

Someone called the Onondaga county police who came and spoke to the campground manager and I believe they warned the dog owners. But in the end the dogs were allowed to stay.

All in all we had a nice time. My only wish would be that the management would be more unaccepting of obviously dangerous pets.

There are mens and womens bathrooms, each with multiple stalls. Showers are available but a bit far from the actual campground. Water was warm but the water pressure wasn’t great. Ice and firewood for sale at the campsite.

Guide to Ellisburg

Dispersed camping near Ellisburg, New York offers access to Lake Ontario's southeastern shoreline and the surrounding forested areas of northern New York. The region experiences four distinct seasons with summer temperatures averaging 70-80°F and winter temperatures frequently dropping below freezing. Campgrounds typically operate from May through mid-October, with several locations offering both waterfront and woodland sites for various camping styles.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Winona Forest CCC Camp, visitors can access multiple trail systems that connect to prime fishing areas. "This is a hub for several snow mobile, cross country ski, and snow shoe trails. Several folks visited on Saturday and Sunday to enjoy the last bit of the snow," notes reviewer Quade S., highlighting the area's multi-seasonal recreational options.

Lake access activities: Westcott Beach State Park Campground provides excellent swimming and water recreation opportunities. "This is a great family beach/day tripping beach. You can get campsites along Lake Ontario where you can see amazing sunsets," writes Dinah V. The park includes a swimming area, though it "can get crowded at the beach where people day visit."

Hiking trails: The region offers multiple hiking options through state parks and forests. "Selkirk Shores State Park Campground has nice hiking/biking trails," mentions Carrie N. Trails range from easy loops within campgrounds to more challenging paths through the surrounding woodlands.

What campers like

Beach access: Southwick Beach State Park Campground receives high marks for its expansive shoreline. "Beautiful new buildings on site, variety of campsites. Favorites are the beachfront sites, access to the beach and beautiful Lake Ontario," says Emily C. Another camper adds, "BEST beach in CNY-sandbar goes on forever-campsites roomy and well taken care of."

Spacious campsites: Many campers appreciate the generous site sizes at certain campgrounds. "Sites are level, easy to level travel trailer," notes a Jellystone Park reviewer. At Westcott Beach, Theresa F. points out, "We have only camped the electric loop up on the hill across the Street from the rest of the park. It is spacious and restroom buildings are kept up."

Wildlife viewing: The natural surroundings provide ample wildlife spotting opportunities. At Selkirk Shores, one camper mentions it's "just as good for tents with wildlife nosing around," while other reviewers note bird watching opportunities along the lakeshore and forest edges.

What you should know

Seasonal bug concerns: Several campgrounds experience significant insect activity during summer months. "One HUGE downfall was the amount of BUGS! Millions (not exaggerating) of midges and mayflies swarming the grounds from Lake Ontario," reports Tracey G. about their stay at Sun Outdoors Association Island. This seasonal phenomenon typically peaks in early summer.

Site flooding potential: After rainfall, some campgrounds experience drainage issues. One reviewer at Southwick Beach noted, "After it rained one night our site & others around us were completely flooded." Check with park offices about site elevation when booking during rainy seasons.

Campground layouts: Different camping areas within the same park can have vastly different atmospheres. At Selkirk Shores, Laura M. explains, "This campground is 4 different loops- A loop is like the loop for people here for fishing, B loop is the mellower crowd, and C and D were our nightmares: mass chaos, children running amok, loud groups."

Tips for camping with families

Recreation programs: Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp Resort offers extensive children's activities. "This campground offers so much for people of all ages - Crafts, Games, Activities, Playground, Pool, Bouncy pillow, Twice Daily wagon rides with Yogi and Boo Boo," shares Cory W. Many families specifically return for these organized events.

Kid-friendly water areas: Several parks feature water recreation areas suitable for children. "The kids had a blast playing in the river, heck the adults had fun too," notes Carrie N. about Jellystone Park, which provides safer water play areas than the main lake.

Playground facilities: Most campgrounds maintain playground equipment for younger visitors. Westcott Beach features a "nice new children's playground" according to Theresa F., while Ontario Shores has an "open field to walk the dog or for children."

Tips from RVers

Full hookup availability: Ontario Shores RV Park provides convenient amenities for RVers. "There are 7 overnight pull thru full hookup sites with concrete patio. Sites are level and spacious," reports Tim W. Most campgrounds in the region offer electric hookups, but full-service sites should be reserved well in advance.

Dump station access: For campgrounds without sewer hookups, check dump station locations and hours. A Jellystone Park reviewer notes, "No sewer hookups available but does have a dump station on your way out," which is common at state park campgrounds in the region.

Site leveling considerations: The terrain at some parks requires preparation. "Good hot showers. Friendly staff. Is currently in a construction zone and is experiencing flooding and dune erosion," mentions Zen W. regarding Southwick Beach. This information helps RVers prepare with appropriate leveling equipment.
